TCU vs Colorado Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

One of the Big 12’s better offenses in 2021 should be even better under new head coach Sonny Dykes.

The Horned Frogs are loaded at receiver, Max Duggan is an underappreciated talent at quarterback, and the balance will be there with a good running game behind a veteran offensive line.

Colorado has to prove it found a pass rush over the offseason, and it has to go from nothing to great in a hurry offensively to keep up the pace. The Buffaloes struggled to get to 20 points – it only scored more than that four times last season – with the second-worst O in college football yardage-wise.

The transfer portal didn’t do enough to take the attack to a whole other level – it needs QB JT Shrout to be amazing coming off a torn ACL, or Brendon Lewis has to be better.

Fortunately for Colorado …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Colorado Will Win

The TCU pass rush isn’t going to be a thing for a little while.

The defense was a stunning disaster last season mostly because it couldn’t do much of anything up front. It would have been a massive help to get a few cupcake games in before this to get everyone in place around the veteran linebackers, but the run D that allowed 222 yards per game will get pushed and tested right away.

No, the Colorado offense isn’t going to be Ohio State, but the running game will come out smashing with a revamped line around Alabama transfer Tommy Brown.

Again, the TCU receiving corps and passing game should be great, but Colorado has the defensive backs to hold up – the secondary might be the team’s biggest strength right away.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are coming off of wildly disappointing seasons. The Colorado offense that didn’t do much of anything will suddenly find a spark at home, the TCU defense that didn’t much of anything will generate more big stops and should be more effective, and …

For all of Colorado’s problems, it was it 3-0 at home after an October 2nd loss to USC – and was 0-5 on the road. TCU was 0-4 on the road over the same stretch.

Of course that shouldn’t matter – new year, new teams, new styles – but the Buffs being in Boulder helps.

The offensive line will come up with a great performance in the late night setting, but it’ll be the defense that rises up with a good fourth quarter to survive a fun – and somewhat shocking – end to Friday before it Week 1 really gets humming the next morning.

Pac-12 Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Pac-12 preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Forget all the monster changes, moves, and speculation about the future for a moment. This year should be a whole lot of fun for a few key reasons.

USC is going to be a blast – there’s going to be as much attention on the football teams, at least for a few months before expansion talk cranks up even more – and the divisions are going bye-bye.

There’s no more Pac-12 North and South with the goal to win the six-team division. Now the conference race comes down to who the top two teams are overall, and it should mean the season comes down to the last day of the regular season.

The schedules play a massive role.

Who misses USC? Who has to play Utah in Salt Lake City? Who has to travel late in the season, and who has to make a longer road trip? It all matters in the 2022 Pac-12 college football predictions for every game.

Pac-12 Coaches Against The Spread: Ranked From Best To Worst. Who Covers?

Pac-12 Football Coaches Against The Spread: Who are the best and worst Pac-12 coaches when it comes to covering?

How good are all of the Pac-12 head coaches against the spread? Going from best to worst, here’s who covers and who doesn’t.

How do all of the Pac-12 head coaches do against the spread, and on the road ATS, and going over on the point total?

If you like to invest, here’s the breakdown of ten of the 12 head coaches – Oregon’s Dan Lanning is in his first year as a head man, and we’re technically counting Washington State’s Jake Dickert as a first year coach since he’s going into his first full season.

One other note, with a few exceptions from the first year coaches who switched gigs – Lincoln Riley at USC and Kalen DeBoer at Washington – these stats reflect how all the coaches have done on their current Pac-12 teams.

Who covers – and sometimes more importantly – who doesn’t?

2022 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year

Caleb Williams, QB Soph. USC

It takes something special to standout among this group of Pac-12 quarterbacks, and the possible two best – throw in Washington State’s Cameron Ward, a transfer from Incarnate Word – and Williams have yet to take a snap in the conference.

Williams put on a show over the second half of last year running Lincoln Riley’s offense at Oklahoma, and now he’s joining the fun in Los Angeles with a loaded group around him. Last year he hit 65% of his passes for 1,912 yards and 21 scores with just four picks, and he ran for 442 yards and six scores. Get ready for him to take things to another level.

2022 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year

Noah Sewell, LB, Soph. Oregon

The big thumper in the middle of the Oregon linebacking corps made 114 tackles last year with four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss with five broken up passes, an interception, and with two forced fumbles. Now there’s a chance he does even more with the talent on both sides to take over at times.

If Justin Flowe can finally catch a break from the injuries, he’s one of the Pac-12’s best linebackers, and Mase Funa and Bradyn Swinson are going to be big-time, too. Everything will flow right into the middle for Sewell to clean up.

Colorado Buffaloes Preview 2022

Is this going to be one of those years when everyone blows off Colorado and then something big happens?

2020 was weird in every way for the Pac-12, but the Buffaloes still managed to push through for a 4-2 season with a bowl appearance.

The 2016 team wasn’t expected to do anything coming off a four-win season, and then came the 10-win run on the way to a Pac-12 Championship appearance.

That might be a little extreme, and it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing thing with the 2022 Buffaloes. Just being good enough to go bowling would be enough.

There might be a ton of key losses through the transfer portal, and this isn’t going to be one of the spotlight teams in the Pac-12 South, but there are more than enough good parts and improvements among the starting 22 to be better than most will likely expect.

It’ll take a big change, though. It wasn’t just that Colorado went 4-8, it’s that it wasn’t all that close in most of the losses and struggled WAY too much on …

Colorado Buffaloes Preview 2022: Offense

The O couldn’t keep things moving. The Buffs had the second-worst offense in college football averaging just 257 yards per game, the 18.8 points per game doesn’t tell the whole story with the consistency, and there wasn’t any semblance of a decent passing attack to get back in games when things weren’t working.

So yes, there are some personnel losses and changes from last year, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It starts with …

The offensive line has to give everyone more time to work. There’s some shuffling, getting tackle Tommy Brown from Alabama should help, and the starting five might quietly grow into a positive with a little bit of time. Now the pass protection and ground attack have to follow.

Leading rusher Jarek Broussard is off to Michigan State, but the rest of the backs return and Sam Houston State transfer Ramon Jefferson – almost 2,000 yards in two years – should quickly become the main man. Now …

Who’s taking over at quarterback? It was a huge setback for the offense when Tennessee transfer JT Shrout was hurt last offseason with a major knee injury and couldn’t go. Brendon Lewis was fine, but the downfield passing game wasn’t there. Lewis can run, he’s experienced, and he’s careful with the ball, but Shrout is the better pure passer.

It wasn’t necessarily a plus that TE Brady Russell led the team in receiving – he made just 25 catches and didn’t score. He’s back, and there are wholesale changes with top WR Brenden Rice going to USC and Dimitri Stanley off to Iowa State, but landing Baylor transfer RJ Sneed might be an upgrade – he’ll stretch the field – around several young parts with the upside to do a lot more.

Colorado Buffaloes Preview 2022: Defense

The defense didn’t get any help from the offense, but it also didn’t do enough to help the cause. The run D struggled, there weren’t enough takeaways, and the pass rush was lacking. That last part was addressed this offseason, and if that starts to kick in, the D that finished last in the Pac-12 in sacks and next-to-last in total defense should rise up fast. That starts with …

The pass rush – it has to show up. Terrance Lang is a big end who fits more in a 3-4 system, but he has to get behind the line more. The tackles are 300+ pounders in.a rotation that should be fine, the outside linebackers have to help with more pressure.

Leading playmaker behind the line Carson Wells is gone from his hybrid role, but the focus on being more disruptive should turn the linebackers loose around top returning tackling LB Quinn Perry. But …

It’s not necessarily a positive that the defense backs made so many plays last year, but they can hit. Leading tackler Isaiah Lewis is back at one safety spot, but big hitter Mark Perry is off to TCU, good corner Mekhi Blackmon is at USC, and fellow corner Christian Gonzalez bolted for Oregon. It’s going to be a young secondary, but as long as the pass rush improves, this group should be okay with a little time.

Pac-12 college football rankings and predictions with the realistic best and worst case records and quick analysis – the 2022 spring version.

It’s almost like the Pac-12 took a year off to get ready for what’s coming.

Washington certainly took a break, Stanford went to sleep after a decent start, and USC all but put out the Not Interested sign after the season was blown up  with the early firing of Clay Helton.

Arizona is improving – last year was likely a step back to take a big leap forward, even if it’s still going to take another season or so.

UCLA showed glimpses of getting stronger, Oregon State and Washington State had some fun, and Utah got to the top of the Pac-12 mountain.

This year, though, the conference looks like it’s going to improve all the way around before all the things are in place to blast off in 2023.

Lincoln Riley at USC, Oregon settling in with Dan Lanning, Washington about to crank up the O with Kalen DeBoer – the Pac-12 is going to be fun.

Where to the 12 teams appear to be this spring? How good are they?

The Pac-12 spring rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Who are the best NFL Draft picks from each of the Pac-12 programs. Which players turned into the greatest stars at the next level?

USC is as good as anyone when it comes to cranking out historic NFL draft picks, and the Pac-12 overall isn’t bad, but some programs are shockingly light.

Who were the best draft picks ever from the Pac-12 programs?

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the Pac-12 schools – these are the best draft picks.

If a player had a great run for someone other than the team that drafted him, he gets knocked down a peg, or isn’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters.
