College Basketball Rankings: San Diego State Is Now A Top Five Team

Aztecs have its highest ranking in nearly a decade.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

No. 4 team in the country.

San Diego State keeps on winning and they are shooting up the rankings and are one step closer to finishing with an undefeated regular season. The Aztecs are No. 4 in both coaches and Associated Press top 25 polls, plus KenPom gives them a 20.9 percent chance of going undefeated.

The Aztecs are standing as the last undefeated team in college basketball after Auburn’s loss last week. In the coaches poll, San Diego State is just three points behind Kansas for third. It also should be noted that the Jayhawks were seventh last week and moved up four spots after toppling Texas and Oklahoma. So, there is still some big conference bias compared to what the Aztecs accomplish.

This No. 4 ranking is the highest in either poll since the 2010-11 year which saw San Diego State also peak with a No. 4 ranking. The swing of votes is No. 2 through No. 9 for the Aztecs in the AP poll with the majority slotting thema at No. 4.

The only way it seems for San Diego State to climb higher in the polls is by other teams above them losing and the Aztecs keep on winning.

ODDS: USU – 2.0

After a week off, Utah State will look to get back in the swing of things against the Boise State Broncos.  As the Mountain West currently sits, Utah State and Boise State both sit in the middle of the pack at 6th and 8th place respectively.  Boise State is coming off a loss against Air Force on Wednesday night while the Aggies are coming off a win against Nevada last Saturday.

Boise State is led in scoring by junior guard, Derrick Alston.  Up to this point Alston is averaging nearly 20 points a game while pulling down 5 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists.  Alston posted a season high of 31 points against Alabama State early this season.  This will prove to be a key matchup for the Aggies as Alston stands at 6’9”.  Although they are touted as one of the tallest teams in the nation, Utah State does not have many weapons that are physically similar to Alston which could prove to be a big advantage for the Broncos.

Another Bronco to keep your eye on is senior forward, RJ Williams.  As the leading rebounder for the Broncos, snagging over 8 a game, Williams is a force to be reckoned with on the glass.  He also averages nearly 12 points a game.  Justinian Jessup is the second leading scorer for the Broncos averaging nearly 15 points per game.  Abu Kigab is another Bronco to keep your eye on as he can also score the rock, averaging 14 points per game.

As always Utah State will be led by senior guard, Sam Merrill.  Merill has struggled from the field over the past few games, but has been able to get to the free throw line.  Look for him to keep up his aggressive style of play.  Merrill is averaging nearly 17 points per game while shooting an abysmal 34% over the past four games.  To his credit, as the reigning MWC player of the year each team will put together an extensive game plan on how to stop him.

Freshman Sean Bairstow saw an increase of minutes against Air Force and Nevada.  The 6’8” Australian native played a big role in the Aggies win over Nevada a week ago.  Keep your eye out for Bairstow.  Big man, Neemias Queta had his best game of the season last week against Nevada.  The big man from Portugal netted 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.  The Aggies will need his play to keep improving throughout the remainder of the season.

This should be a fun game to watch.  Boise State always protects their home court and Utah State has had trouble on the road this season.  It will be interesting to see who steps up for their respective teams.

The Nevada Wolf Pack are heading down to San Diego where they will take on the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday. The tip off between the Wolf Pack and the Aztecs is scheduled for 5pm and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

The Wolf Pack return to action after coming off a close victory at home over Wyoming on Tuesday night. Nevada’s Jalen Harris scored on a driving layup with nine seconds left in the game to propel the Wolf Pack to victory over the Cowboys 68-67.

Unlike when Nevada lost to San Jose State on January 9th when Nevada struggled to make key plays against the Spartans, the Wolf Pack led by Jalen Harris, Nisre Zouzua and Jazz Johnson made big plays late to contribute to the Wolf Pack’s win over Wyoming.

Nevada will need those big plays on Saturday when they take on the #7 San Diego State Aztecs. The Aztecs are the only remaining unbeaten team in the nation with an 18-0 overall record after they defeated Fresno State 64-55 on Tuesday night.

The Aztecs once again boast a stifling defense this season as they lead the Mountain West in scoring defense giving up an average of 56.9 points per game. The Aztecs also lead the conference in field goal percentage defense at 36.9 percent and are second in the conference in 3PT field goal defense as they are giving up only 26.7 percent per game.

The Aztec player to watch for in this contest is guard Malachi Flynn, the Washington State transfer leads the team and the Mountain West in points and assists as he is averaging 16.6 points per game and 4.9 assists per game.

The Aztecs are one of the elite teams in college basketball this season and are once again a formidable opponent with their tough defense. Nevada will have their hands full in trying to defeat San Diego State and secure their first ever win at Viejas Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Can San Diego State Be A No. 1 Seed?

What happens if the Aztecs keep on winning?

[jwplayer 18QegcJn-sNi3MVSU]

San Diego State is a 1 seed. Can they stay there?

Contact/Follow  @aztecbreakdown & @MWCwire

Recently, Jerry Palm of CBS Sports released a new bracket projection and in it, San Diego State was the No. 1 seed in the South region. Aztec fans are not shy about telling you how good their team is, and the national media is starting to jump on the band wagon.

The first question that must be asked is, has SDSU earned a No. 1 seed at this point. I’d say they have.

They are 15-0, which isn’t easy regardless of who you play. They are ranked No. 1 in the NET, the system the committee uses to help seed teams. On top of that, SDSU is 6-0 in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games. The other No. 1 seeds are Duke, Butler, and Gonzaga, at 5-1, 8-1, and 3-1 in quad 1 and 2 games, respectively. The Aztec’s schedule isn’t the strongest at 103, but it is way ahead of Gonzaga’s at 213, so if you don’t complain about Gonzaga not beating anyone than you can’t complain about SDSU not beating anyone.

Could an argument be made for two other teams to jump up and take the spots of San Diego State and Gonzaga? Sure. However, that is not the same thing as saying San Diego State isn’t deserving.

Having established that San Diego State has earned a 1 seed to thins point, what do they need to do to stay there? It can be a little bit tricky. If they enter the tournament undefeated they will likely be a 1 seed.

Their record in quad 1 and quad 2 games at that point would likely be around 12-0 to 14-0 (counting the conference tournament) depending on how the rest of the conference does. That being said, KenPom has the odds of the Aztecs finishing undefeated at 6.4%. With travel and altitude being such big factors in the Mountain West, it’s tough to win on the road. In addition, this San Diego State team almost lost at home to San Jose State a few weeks ago. Anything can happen.

What if they only lose one game?

Matt Norlander said in the Eye on College Basketball podcast that he thinks if SDSU loses only one game, including the conference tournament, they will be a No. 1 seed, regardless of who the loss is to. I’m no bracketology expert, but I could see that happening. I think it would also somewhat depend on how the other teams that are high in the bracket perform. Teams like Kansas and Ohio State have more opportunities for wins against Quality opponents, so if they go on a tear and the Aztecs drop one to a Wyoming or Air Force team, I could see them falling out of that top spot.

What if they lose two games?

This is where things get interesting. Will the committee, who likely doesn’t watch much Aztec basketball due to late tip off times, put SDSU as a No. 1 seed if they’ve lost two games? Some of it would depend on who they lose to. If one of those losses is to Utah State in the conference tournament final, maybe the committee lets them keep the 1 seed. If they lose to Colorado State and UNLV at home in the same week (end of February), then it wouldn’t be hard for me to believe that the east coast bias would kick in and the committee would drop the Aztecs down the bracket.

As a point of discussion, I also wonder if SDSU should want the No. 1 seed. I know, but let me explain. Receiving a 1 seed would be an awesome accomplishment. That being said, making the first Elite 8 or even the first Final Four in school history would be a better accomplishment. As a one seed in the South region, which is where this bracket has them, SDSU would play the first two rounds in Sacramento, where some fans could travel but many wouldn’t, and then play the next weekend in Houston (assuming they make it that far). As a No. 2 seed in the West region (assuming Gonzaga remains the 1 seed) the first games would be played in St. Louis, and then the second-weekend games would be played in L.A. at the Staples Center.

The chance to play a sweet 16 game in front of a home crowd is very appealing. The argument could be made that a 1 seed would be more valuable than a home crowd, but it is something worth thinking about.

Two teams claim first-place votes, again.

A reminder that these rankings range from Dec. 23 through 29th, so keep that in mind if these power rankings go out later in the week.

There was not a lot of basketball played during the Christmas holidays with Boise State being out in Hawaii for a few games and a bunch of non-Division I games on this past Saturday.

Having said that, the amount of movement was minimal this week due to the lack of games. One change that happened was that the Aztecs pulled within one first-place vote of being unanimous. Last week, Utah State had two first-place votes but now they are down to one.

The top four remained the same but it was Boise State who swapped spots with Colorado State to go to No. 5 after it went 3-1 with its one loss only being to Georgia Tech.

Besides that it was a boring week for those rankings with the lack of interesting games. That will all change once league play resumes in full force.

San Diego State moves up to No. 13

The latest Associated Press top 25 poll is rewarding San Diego State for remaining undefeated with its 13-0 record. This past week the Aztecs played just one game and defeated Cal Poly, 73-57.

That win and maybe the pollsters noticing the Aztecs topped Utah the week prior is why San Diego State jumped Maryland and Michigan State. There is only one other undefeated team and it is Auburn who is 12-0 and currently sits at No. 8.

This point of the year when league play starts could see San Diego State stall in the rankings even with winning. They do get a big game vs. Utah State in Logan for the second game of league play and that will carry some pull as the Aggies are receiving votes in the latest poll. It is possible that the Aztecs ould be a top 10 team after beating Utah State, plus Fresno State which they resume league play against on Jan. 1.

Happy Holidays from Mountain West Wire! Enjoy the yuletide with this week’s installment of the DPI rankings.

It seems almost impossible that it’s already the holiday season, but here we are. There have been nearly two months of hoops already and the non-conference season is just about over.

And while we think we may have clarity now, league play is a horse of a different color. Teams that are on cloud nine right now may come crashing back to earth. Others that have been struggling might finally shake the demons free from their backs.

But as we inch ever closer to the official onset of the Mountain West season, let’s take one last look at how all the teams stack up with just a few buy-games left on the league’s non-conference docket.

As always, for a full rundown of how the Dieckhoff Power Index, or DPI, is calculated, head over to my site. And bear in mind, non-Division I games do not count toward the DPI, so all those games against Life Pacific and Portland Bible go out the window. These ratings are current through December 23.

#1 — SAN DIEGO STATE

http://www.dpihoops.net/sdsuwk8.png

The Aztecs had nearly two weeks off between their nailbiter against San Jose State and their next game versus Utah. Clearly, they used this time to reflect and improve. SDSU ran the Utes out of the building just days after the former Mountain West squad beat Kentucky. The defense continues to be the star of the show, but this team can score, too.

#2 — UTAH STATE

The Aggies have been dancing on the knife’s edge over the past few weeks, but they’ve come out on the other side mostly unscathed. In their past four games, Utah State has won in overtime, won by four points, won by two points in overtime, and won by three points. But margins notwithstandings, wins over Florida and South Florida solidified their at-large case.

#3 — NEW MEXICO

Oh, no. Things were going a little too well for the Lobos, weren’t they? After an impressive start, New Mexico announced over the weekend that starters Carlton Bragg and JJ Caldwell would be suspended indefinitely. Paul Weir was able to corral the rest of the team together and they won again over lowly Houston Baptist, but adversity has descended upon Albuquerque.

#4 — NEVADA

The Wolf Pack are the prime candidate to take on third place in the league should the Lobos stumble during this tumultuous time. Their trio of is legitimately dangerous. They hung very tight with Saint Mary’s last week, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see them hang a big win over SDSU or Utah State this season. They’ve still got a lot of room to grow, though.

#5 — COLORADO STATE

You just can’t get rid of these Rams! Though they aren’t making many waves on the national scale, give them credit for sticking around the top half of the league for this long. Nico Carvacho is Nico Carvacho, and Isaiah Stevens has been a revelation in Niko Medved’s backcourt. Fellow freshman David Roddy started his first game in CSU’s 111-104 triple OT win over Tulsa.

#6 — BOISE STATE

Boise State has given a pretty good indication of where they are right now with their performance so far, both on the season as a whole and in the Diamond Head Classic. The Broncos lost to a wayward Georgia Tech club and then pummeled an up-and-down Portland team. They got a crummy Christmas gift, drawing a good UTEP team in their final game in Hawai’i.

#7 — FRESNO STATE

Because the DPI doesn’t count non-D1 games, the Bulldogs sit at just 3-8—yet they’ve managed to stay in seventh place, thanks to a slightly above-average defense. It was another heartbreaker for Justin Hutson on Monday, with Fresno State falling to San Francisco by just two points. That’s the sixth time the Bulldogs have either lost by one possession or lost in overtime.

#8 — AIR FORCE

The Falcons continue to struggle during this disappointing year, following up a narrow win over Denver with a loss to Drake. The offense has been good, but they haven’t been able to stop opponents from scoring. They rank near the bottom of the nation both in their ability to make teams miss and in their proclivity toward forcing turnovers.

#9 — UNLV

A rocky start to the season got worse at the start of the month with the news that grad transfer Elijah Mitrou-Long would miss six to eight weeks with a thumb injury. The Rebels are 1-2 without him, with losses to BYU and Pacific buoyed only by a forgettable triumph over Robert Morris. Fans may already be counting down the days until David Jenkins debuts in Vegas.

#10 — WYOMING

More of the same from the Cowboys, as Hunter Maldonado continues to pile up mounds of individual statistics while the team flounders. They did snap a six-game skid, though. To be clear, that’s not a knock on Maldonado. He has developed into a fine player; there’s just not enough talent throughout the roster. But their defensive metrics indicate that they’re putting forth the effort.

#11 — SAN JOSÉ STATE

Yeesh. The Spartans’ skid has extended to eight games after San Jose State fell to Santa Clara and UC Riverside last week. The shots just aren’t falling and they don’t take care of the ball. Seneca Knight is having a good year, but once again, the Spartans have separated themselves as the clear-cut lowest ranked team in the Mountain West.

That’s it for this week. Here’s wishing you all a safe and happy holiday from Mountain West Wire and the DPI.

But buckle up. Conference play starts next week.

The undefeated Aztecs climb the polls.

San Diego State is just one of three undefeated teams this year alongside No. 8 Auburn and unranked Liberty. The Aztecs have been on a tear all year and this past week they earned a quality win over Utah who happened to defeat then-No. 6 Kentucky. So, the 80-52 neutral-court victory over the Utes carried some weight.

The 12-0 Aztecs moved up again in the poll and are sitting at No. 15 with one more non-conference game to go as they host Cal Poly on Dec. 28.

Utah State is the only other Mountain West team getting consideration with 36 points in the poll.

In other rankings, the NET really likes San Diego State.

It was back to non-conference play last week for the league’s affiliate members on the heels of the opening salvo to the long Mountain West season. Not everybody was in action—and some now wish they hadn’t been.

But it wasn’t all misery.

Some teams are making big strides, including one squad trying to make a move into the uppermost echelon of the MWC.

Below are the DPI rankings heading into the heart of Week 7. If you’re new to the rankings or just want a refresher, head here for a rundown of how the DPI is calculated. The ratings below reflect games played through Tuesday, December 17. As always, non-Division I games are not counted in the DPI.

[lawrence-related id=23624]

#1 — SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS

Last Week: #1

The Aztecs moved to the #1 spot in the Mountain West last week and with no games since their close shave against San Jose State, they haven’t moved much up or down. Brian Dutcher’s team is still undefeated and boasts one of the best defenses in the country. Malachi Flynn’s star turn has propelled SDSU into the national polls, along with the play of Matt Mitchell, Yanni Wetzell, and Jordan Schakel. If KJ Feagin can provide a little more offense, this team could really turn in a special season.

#2 — UTAH STATE AGGIES

Last Week: #2

It’s been a bit of a rough patch for the Aggies over the past few games. They still have one of the two best rosters in the league, but they aren’t quite living up to preseason expectations so far. After losing to Saint Mary’s and looking underwhelming in their first two Mountain West games, Utah State fell to BYU on Saturday in Salt Lake City. It was only their second loss, but it’s a missed opportunity for a good out-of-conference win to put on their NCAA Tournament resume.

#3 — NEW MEXICO LOBOS

Last Week: #4

The Lobos have won six straight after toppling New Mexico State and Grand Canyon since the last DPI rankings were posted here. Though they aren’t playing at the level of SDSU just yet, this patchwork roster of homegrown talent and incoming transfers has performed admirably in the early going. JaQuan Lyle has been everything that Paul Weir could have wanted and more. Oh, and Carlton Bragg is averaging a double-double. So far, so good.

#4 — NEVADA WOLF PACK

Last Week: #3

The Wolf Pack looked like they were starting to turn a corner over the past few weeks, winning five straight games on either side of Thanksgiving. But last week, Nevada was the second casualty of BYU’s surge, along with Utah State and UNLV. The offense had been clicking on all cylinders, but immediately downshifted from a 100-point performance against Air Force to a 42-point outing against the Cougars. That kind of volatility that makes it tough to trust Steve Alford’s club.

#5 — BOISE STATE BRONCOS

Last Week: #6

Leon Rice is getting things back on track in Boise, but outside of their win over BYU—before Yoeli Childs came back, of course—the Broncos haven’t really beaten anybody. It was another rocky showing for Boise State last week, with a midweek loss to Tulsa preceding a blowout win over Alabama State. Derrick Alston is averaging 21 points and Justinian Jessup is finding his form. But the starting five is not the problem here; Rice’s team suffers from a lack of depth.

#6 — COLORADO STATE RAMS

Last Week: #5

The Rams jumped out to a promising start, but they’ve lost three of their past four games, including both of their opening Mountain West bouts. Mixed in there was a 72-68 win over South Dakota State, and while the Jackrabbits are not a bad squad by any means, that they played CSU so closely gives a good indication of where the Rams are right now. Niko Medved’s team gave in-state rivals Colorado a run for their money, but ultimately fell 56-48 over the weekend.

#7 — AIR FORCE FALCONS

Last Week: #8

The defense still leaves a lot to be desired, but recently, the Falcons have been getting better results than they did during a rough November. The new month has been kinder to the cadets, with Air Force winning four of its past five (Note: Tuesday’s 99-42  win over Johnson & Wales is not counted in the DPI). AJ Walker has taken an important step forward as an offensive option. The sophomore was averaging 20 points per game over the past three games coming into Tuesday.

#8 — FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS

Last Week: #10

Justin Huston finally got his team to a second Division I win on Saturday against Cal Poly. But the bigger story here is the seven losses that they have already incurred. Nate Grimes is doing exactly what was expected of him so far, averaging a double-double with 13.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per night. Guards Jarred Hyder and New Williams both have some good performances under their belts, but they haven’t been able to click at the same time. That needs to change.

#9 — UNLV RUNNIN’ REBELS

Last Week: #9

The Rebels didn’t play last week, so the bad taste of the 33-point loss to BYU back has been lingering for a week and a half. There have been a lot of close calls, with UNLV playing in four separate overtime games so far. They are shooting under 42% from the field and turning the ball over 15 times a night. Games against Pacific and Robert Morris this week offer TJ Otzelberger the chance to start making some headway in his first year at the helm.

#10 — WYOMING COWBOYS

Last Week: #7

Allen Edwards got his Cowboys out to a 3-3 start, but they have dropped five straight games, including their most recent defeat at the hands of Northern Colorado. The Bears didn’t just sneak past Wyoming, either—the Big Sky hopefuls handed the home team a 21-point drubbing at Arena-Auditorium. The defense has been fair to middling, but the offense has been dreadful thus far. The Cowboys are shooting under 50% on two-pointers and just over 30% on threes.

#11 — SAN JOSÉ STATE SPARTANS

Last Week: #11

There’s a bit of a running joke around here about which Spartan is most likely to transfer next year, since the sputtering Spartans have seen five double-digit scorers depart in the past three offseasons—including Brandon Clarke, who parlayed his post-SJSU star turn at Gonzaga into a budding NBA career. All jokes aside, Seneca Knight has separated himself as the Spartans’ top option, scoring 12.5 points per game. Hopefully the sophomore can remain an important building block for Jean Prioleau.

Just the one Mountain West team.

The latest Associated Press college basketball rankings are out and there was a lot of movement. On the national front, there is a new No. 1 team in Kansas and they are the fifth different team to take the top spot which is the most movement at the to pre-New Year’s Day.

Within the Mountain West, it is San Diego State who is the lone ranked team at No. 20. They have not played since their last-second win over San Jose State back on Dec. 8, and due to other movement climb five spots.

The Aztecs get a decent opponent on Dec. 21 as they take on Utah down in Los Angeles as a chance to maybe move up in the rankings.

Utah State is earning votes even after its loss to BYU over the weekend. For a second team to be ranked it will take a while for the Aggies to move into the polls. They do face San Diego State early in league play so that would be an opportunity for Utah State to re-enter the polls.
