Cleveland Browns vs Carolina Panthers Game Preview

Why Cleveland Browns Will Win

The Brown running game has to hammer away from the start.

The passing attack will be a massive question mark without the star parts at receiver – with some due respect to Amari Cooper – and Jacoby Brissett under center, but the backs are there to keep working and grinding against the   okay Panther defensive front.

Run the ball, rely on the pass rush to come through on third downs, and send everyone at 6 to see if he can handle the pressure. However …

Week 1 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Carolina Panthers Will Win

Not to assume the obvious, but who knows this Cleveland defense – at least the main parts – better than the guy who worked against it in practice every day?

Baker Mayfield might not be Brady or Mahomes, but he’s an upgrade for the Carolina passing game. He’s got a healthy Christian McCaffrey to work with, his receiving corps is more loaded than it might seem, and it might not take too much to put the pressure on.

Go ahead. Make Brissett try to win this through the air.

Week 1 NFL Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Mayfield wasn’t anything amazing, but he wasn’t that bad.

The formula will be simple. Run the ball on the Brown defensive tackles, get the ball out of Mayfield’s hands in a hurry, and load up the house against the run. Until Cleveland proves it can get the passing game going, Carolina can rely on a secondary that held up well until late.

Mayfield will have his revenge. For now.

Browns rookie OL Dawson Deaton suffers torn ACL in practice

The Cleveland Browns have lost yet another center to injury

The Cleveland Browns have lost yet another center before the regular season even begins.

Dawson Deaton suffered a torn ACL in practice Monday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, just days after the Browns lost starter Nick Harris to injury.

A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of Texas Tech, Deaton likely now looks ahead to 2023, after spending his entire rookie season rehabbing from the knee injury.

Traditionally and statistically, Day 3 of the NFL Draft is a total wasteland. You’re far, far better packaging your picks to move up into the top three rounds of a future draft – the odds of getting a consistently decent starter are shockingly small.

But every team thinks it can make magic out of the Day 3 mess of prospects, and it’s worth a shot to dumb-luck into a possible mainstay. What are the remaining needs that need to be filled for each team? Here are every team’s picks so far with the possibilities of who they could get.

Of course this all blows up once the trades start flying, but the idea is to give a rough snapshot of what each team might be able to do.

Why Browns fans should be excited about Jedrick Wills

The Browns filled their biggest need with a blue-chip prospect by landing Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills in the 2020 NFL Draft

The Browns made it a point of emphasis to improve their offensive line this offseason, and they did exactly that by selecting Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills with the No. 10 pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

The 6-foot-4, 312-pound Wills played as a right tackle with the Crimson Tide, but he projects well on the blind side if Cleveland so envisions him playing there. A well-rounded tackle prospect who stakes a claim to being the most talented offensive lineman in the 2020 class, Wills is a polished player who uses his hands effectively, timing and placing his strikes with acute precision. He keeps his pads low and is able to maintain a low center of gravity, maximizing his anchor strength and keeping good balance.

Wills’ physical tools give him some intriguing value at the next level, as well. He is a solid athlete who moves around with pretty good body control and lateral quickness for his size. His strength is admirable, as he latches onto defenders with an imposing grip and has the raw power to manhandle an opponent at the point of attack, as well as the force in his lower body to keep his legs churning and drive defenders back. Combine that strength with his red-hot motor, and Wills projects to be a high-quality tackle in the NFL.

The Browns added Jack Conklin in free agency, and while the former Titans starter will shore up the right tackle spot, they still needed an improvement at the other tackle position. If all goes well, Wills should be able to start right away at left tackle and give Cleveland an anchor at that position that they’ve lacked since Joe Thomas retired after the 2017 season.

Team Needs

Offensive Tackle

Despite the signing of offensive tackle Jack Conklin, the Browns still desperately need help along the offensive line. They should have their pick of two of the three top tackles in the first round and you have to assume this is the direction they will go. In fact, the Browns might draft multiple offensive linemen to hedge their bets.

Safety

The Browns are pretty shorthanded at safety and did nothing to truly address it in free agency. So don’t be shocked if they use a day two pick on one of the more athletic guys in what is turning out to be a very deep safety group.

Linebacker

The loss of Joe Schobert left a big hole in the middle of the Browns defense and the absence of his production will be missed. There are several middle round prospects who have been highly productive college players despite not having overwhelming athletic traits who could fill a similar role with the Browns.
