52 days until Browns season opener: 5 players to wear 52 in Cleveland

As the countdown to the regular season continues we are D’Qwell Jackson days away

The Cleveland Browns are set to head to the Greenbrier in West Virginia in the coming days for training camp to kick off. There have been a total of 23 different players to wear the number 52 for the Browns. The first player to wear it was George Young in 1946 and he would rock the 52 through the 1951 season.

Cleveland’s seventh-round pick Dawson Deaton was set to wear the number last season before his injury and he was ultimately cut before camp this year. The most famous player to wear it since the return would be Browns ring of honor member former linebacker D’Qwell Jackson.

The Cleveland Browns have made a roster move to make room for the newest cornerback to their roster in Thakarius Keyes. Waived with an injury designation, 2022 NFL draft seventh round pick Dawson Deaton will now look for a new home.

Deaton missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the preseason. Facing an uphill climb to make the roster this summer anyway, it seems as though Deaton’s recovery has put a damper on his ability to even compete in training camp.

The Browns still sit with Ethan Pocic, Nick Harris, and Luke Wypler as the remaining centers on their roster.

How did the Browns’ rookies grade in Year 1?

A look back at the 2022 Browns rookie class.

After trading back and trading multiple picks to Houston for Deshaun Watson the Cleveland Browns ended up picking nine players in the 2022 NFL Draft. Fans were surprised when the team traded out of the second round completely and shocked when they decided to take corner Martin Emerson with their first pick.

Around the NFL writer Nick Shook released his grades for all of the AFC North’s rookie classes. Overall Shook graded the 2022 class for the Browns as a C plus. Let’s look over Shook’s grade and his comments as well as some thoughts of my own about the rookie class. This class takes a step forward in 2023 and will be important if the team wants to make the playoffs.

Browns rookie OL Dawson Deaton suffers torn ACL in practice

The Cleveland Browns have lost yet another center to injury

The Cleveland Browns have lost yet another center before the regular season even begins.

Dawson Deaton suffered a torn ACL in practice Monday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, just days after the Browns lost starter Nick Harris to injury.

A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of Texas Tech, Deaton likely now looks ahead to 2023, after spending his entire rookie season rehabbing from the knee injury.

Rookie OL Dawson Deaton tears ACL, out for year

Two major injuries at the same position could create real concern for the Browns:

The hits keep coming for the Cleveland Browns. Injuries are a part of the game for every team but they become problematic if major ones come to key contributors or when multiple injuries happen to the same position.

So far, the biggest loss for the Browns was KR/PR/WR Jakeem Grant’s season-ending Achilles injury. New starting center Nick Harris went down on the second snap of the team’s opening preseason game with a knee injury but he has yet to be ruled out for the year even if it is expected.

Monday came with another injury at the center position as Dawson Deaton, Cleveland’s seventh-round selection in the 2022 NFL draft, was carted off the field. Late Monday night came word that he too will miss the entire season:

Michael Dunn and Hjalte Froholdt rotated in to provide some depth at the position on Monday.

With Harris likely done for the season, many wondered if veteran J.C. Tretter could be in line for a return to the Browns. While Tretter’s injuries have kept him from practicing for most of the last three years, the veteran was a solid performer on game days.

Cleveland will have to get down to 85 players on their roster as of Tuesday which will include Deaton being placed on injured reserve.

Browns center Dawson Deaton suffers torn ACL in practice

The Cleveland Browns are facing another injury up front, as rookie Dawson Deaton suffered a torn ACL in practice.

Injury woes continue to mount along the Cleveland Browns’ offensive line. A few days after center Nick Harris suffered a knee injury, likely ending the season for the first-year starter, fellow center Dawson Deaton suffered a torn ACL in practice.

Cleveland drafted Deaton in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft. The Texas Tech product spent his redshirt freshman season at tackle and guard before kicking inside to center.

Mike Garofolo was the first to report on Deaton’s torn ACL:

After Harris suffered his injury in Friday night’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ethan Pocic stepped into the starting role for the Browns. Pocic signed with the team this past offseason, after starting his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Browns have another rookie, Brock Hoffman, on the roster. The undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech played 27 snaps on Friday night.

Of course, J.C. Tretter is a name that is linked with any team that has a need at the center spot. The former Browns offensive lineman remains a free agent.

Browns camp update: A few moves, more injuries and Garrett still out

A few more injuries, a few more problems for the Browns while Garrett continues to be absent, Brissett’s status for this week’s game updated as well:

Monday was an interestingly busy day for the Cleveland Browns as their second day of training camp after the start of preseason games happened. Sunday included a few injury updates and DE Myles Garrett being excused from practice.

On Monday, we did not get an update on QB Deshaun Watson’s discipline or OL Nick Harris’ injury but we saw the Browns back out on the field in Berea. This week will include joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles coming to town before the two meet in the second preseason game for both teams.

Cleveland won’t play many, if any, starters in the game and it is likely Philadelphia will do the same.

Unfortunately, Monday came with a few more injuries of concern for the Browns:

Dawson Deaton: What the Browns are getting in their 7th-round center

Our @joshkeatley16 finishes up his series with Dawson Deaton: What the Browns are getting in their 7th-round center #Browns:

The Cleveland Browns did not have a first-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft and despite many fans clamoring for them to trade back in to snag a star, Cleveland made the decision to create no chaos on the first day.

On the second day, Browns fans grew even angrier, because the franchise elected to trade back from their first draft selection, but once they did make a selection they made some noise.

We already covered what the Browns are getting in Martin EmersonAlex WrightDavid Bell, Perrion WinfreyCade York, Jerome Ford and Isaiah Thomas, now we move on to their next selection. With the 246th selection in the NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Dawson Deaton, center from Texas Tech.

Now let’s see what he can do:

With pick #246, the Browns select OL Dawson Deaton

Nine selections, including an athletic center out of Texas Tech with their final selection:

The Cleveland Browns ended up drafting nine players in the 2022 NFL draft. With the team’s roster full of talent, some of the later picks are likely to be fighting to make the roster. Four of those selections were on the offensive side of the ball including the final selection.

With pick #246, the Browns selected OL Dawson Deaton from Texas Tech. The 6’6″, 306-pound lineman played mostly at center for the Red Raiders. While his body type seems to fit more for a tackle, his history is on the interior.

With J.C. Tretter being released this offseason, Cleveland is expected to have Nick Harris step in as the team’s starting center but also added Ethan Pocic at the position in free agency.

Deaton’s athletic profile is quite impressive:

With Kevin Stefanski’s wide zone run scheme, Deaton’s movement skills will be highly valued. At his size, it will be vital that he is able to control his pad level while on the move.

Following their nine selections, the Browns move on to undrafted free agents. We will keep you up to date with all reported signings by the team.
