Northern Illinois vs Buffalo Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

It’s right there for the taking. Win this, win the MAC West and go play for the conference championship.

The defense has been a tad sketchy over the last few weeks, but the offense has found the explosion through the air now that everyone has loaded up to stop the run.

Buffalo can’t stop any of it.

The Bulls are getting roasted through the air over the last two weeks – you’re doing something wrong if you’re getting blown up by Bowling Green and Miami University – but this should be about the run defense. UB gives up 200 yards per game on the ground with too much ease.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Buffalo offense has to keep up at home.

It went bye-bye last week in the blowout loss to Miami University, but it rolled for close to 500 yards against Bowling Green after coming up with 454 against Akron.

Okay, so big days on those two might not seem like that bit a deal, but the Northern Illinois pass defense doesn’t make enough big things happen and the run D was rolled by Ball State and Kent State for over 600 yards over the last two weeks.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Buffalo keep its bowl hopes alive – it needs to win this and beat Ball State next week – all while making Northern Illinois work for the West? It’ll be up in the first half as it comes out smoking in the final home game of the season.

But the Huskies will get the passing game going in the second half as Rocky Lombardi stays hot after a fantastic last three weeks. The balance will kick in late with two big scoring drives to finally pull away.

Buffalo vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Buffalo run defense is but a mere rumor.

From home run touchdown dashes from Ohio, to getting hammered by Bowling Green and Akron for over 220 yards each, to the Kent State FlashFast style of offense, everyone is getting fat on this front wall.

How bad is this? The Bulls are 113th in the nation against the run allowing an average of 200 yards per game.

Can Miami take advantage of opportunity? Not really.

The RedHawks wouldn’t might running, but it only came up with 200 yards twice this year and once was against LIU of the FCS world.

On the other side, the Bulls are rolling with close to 500 yards in three of the last four games with a great balance, a lot of explosion, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Miami University Will Win

The Miami offense is about to throw a whole lot.

Teams are used to running the ball at will on the Buffalo D, but that’s not really what the RedHawks do.

Brett Gabbert is coming off a 492-yard passing day with five scores against Ohio, the O has hit over 200 yards through the air against everyone but Cincinnati, and the Buffalo secondary can be thrown on.

Gabbert will get time – the Miami offensive line has been fantastic at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Teams are usually too busy running the ball on the UB D and don’t bother with throwing, but getting past 200 yards isn’t going to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Neither defense is doing anything to take the ball away, both teams are coming off of embarrassing losses – Miami lost to Ohio and Buffalo somehow managed to lose to Bowling Green – and now it’s do-or-die time for any hopes of going bowling.

And Miami University is still in the MAC East title chase.

MU will get the running game going for the first time in a while, and the passing attack will work, too. The RedHawk defense will step up against the run, but Buffalo will throw well enough to stay in this. It won’t be enough.

It’s going to be surprisingly fun because neither side will stop the other. Miami will stop Buffalo more.

Buffalo vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Is Bowling Green ever going to prove to the world that the 14-10 win over Minnesota wasn’t an all-timer of a fluke?

How did the team respond after what appeared to be a program-transforming win? Four straight losses including a blowout to Eastern Michigan and a 14-point defeat to Akron.

However, the passing game has finally started to work after years of struggling. The Falcons are getting past 200 yards with regularity, the pass defense has allowed fewer than 150 yards in five of the eight games, and the potential really is there to rise up and produce something strong.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Buffalo Will Win

There’s a reason the pass defense stats are so great. The Bowling Green defense isn’t anything amazing.

Tennessee and Northern Illinois each ran for over 300 yards, Kent State ran for 262, and Minnesota should’ve ran for more than 182 it did in the clunker.

Buffalo doesn’t have the offense of the last few years, but the ground game has been fantastic over the last few weeks to go along with a more consistently solid passing attack.

The Bull defensive line is great at getting into the backfield, the offensive line is great at keeping defenses out of the backfield, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a focus game for Buffalo.

Bowling Green is playing better than it has in the last few years, but UB has a way of struggling to put games away. It needed a minor miracle to beat a bad Ohio team, it beat Old Dominion by one, and the easiest win over an FBS team was against Akron.

This won’t be a breeze, but the Bulls will keep moving the chains in the second half to finally pull away.

Buffalo vs Akron Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

It’s been a bit of a grind at times, but Buffalo has been able to stay in every game but the loss to Nebraska.

The rushing attack was great against Kent State, the passing game came through against Ohio, and overall the offense is strong on third downs and keeping things moving. It all starts with an offensive line that’s among the best in the nation at not allowing plays in the backfield, and it’s giving everyone enough time to not have to force anything.

Buffalo doesn’t have a turnover problem. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Akron Will Win

The Buffalo run defense is a problem.

The stats from the Ohio game are a tad skewed – there was a 99-yard dash in there – but the Bulls have allowed 200 yards or more in five of the last six games. Akron’s running game is – to be nice about it – spotty, but it has to keep hammering away to see if something can break. Even 120 yards would be strong enough make a huge difference.

Akron doesn’t have a big turnover problem, the passing game has been the most efficient in the MAC – Zach Gibson has done a solid job over the last two weeks for DJ Irons with three touchdown passes against both Bowling Green and Miami University – and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Akron really pull off a second MAC win in the last three games?

Buffalo has a horrible habit of playing up or down to the competition, but like the Ohio win, it’ll find a way to come out with the late play needed to survive. Akron just doesn’t have the running game needed to take advantage of the bad UB D.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Ohio vs Buffalo Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

At least the team has been more competitive.

It’s been a disastrous season considering the hope was for a MAC title run, but the Bobcats easily got by Akron on the road and pushed Central Michigan in a tough loss. The O ran all over the Zips and threw well against the Chippewas – it should be able to grind a bit on a UB D that gave up 200 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games.

Defensively, the secondary should be okay. Buffalo will get yards through the air, but it doesn’t do much down the field and it only has two touchdown passes since the opener against Wagner.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Buffalo Will Win

Ohio is having a hard time against the run, and the deep group of UB backs should go off.

The Bobcats have the third-worst run defense in the country, giving up over 300 yards to Louisiana (fine) and Northwestern (not fine) and getting hammered by just about everyone else.

Akron is the only team that didn’t run all that well, coming up with 112 yards in a season-best day by the Bobcats.

UB just hit Kent State for over 300 yards and should be able to get to 200.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams have been a stunning disappointment.

Buffalo losing to Nebraska and Coastal Carolina wasn’t a big deal, but starting 0-2 in the MAC with losses to Western Michigan and Kent State hurts.

It starts here with the offense running and running some more. The good Bull pass rush doing just enough against a good Ohio offensive front to own third downs.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Western Michigan vs Buffalo Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The offensive balance is working.

The Broncos might not have the most consistent running game, but it works well enough. They might not have the most explosive passing attack, but it works well enough.

There aren’t a slew of turnovers, the defense is living in the backfield, and the team is brilliant at controlling the clock and the tempo thanks to that D that comes up with big things on third downs.

However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Buffalo Will Win

Buffalo is better offensively on third downs.

The Bulls don’t have the dominant attack of the last few seasons – especially on the ground – but they’ve still managed to be competitive under a new coaching staff. They got to this point 2-2, and now it’s time to turn it on for the MAC season.

The offensive line has been outstanding in pass protection, and that’s allowing everyone to work without being rushed – and there aren’t a ton of turnovers – and the third down conversions are rolling.

But …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The UB defense can’t seen to find one thing it can do really, really well.

After destroying Wagner to start the season – because who doesn’t? – the Bulls have allowed 200 rushing yards and 200 passing in each of the last three games.

Western Michigan will keep that going.

The Broncos are hardly a lock to roll through the MAC but they’re looking like they’ll be dangerous every week from here on. They don’t turn the ball over enough to matter, and the offense will be steady enough to win the race in a terrific fight between these two.

Buffalo vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Buffalo offense keeps things moving.

Old Dominion’s defense hasn’t been all that bad so far – considering it had to deal with Wake Forest and Liberty – but it hasn’t been able to get off the field. The third down stops aren’t there, and that’s where UB should be able to shine behind an O line that’s fantastic at keeping everyone clean.

Even with games against Nebraska and Coastal Carolina to deal with, the Bulls have yet to allow a sack and the ground game hasn’t been bad.

Old Dominion is struggling with its passing efficiency – the downfield plays aren’t there – but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Again, at least statistically, the ODU defense hasn’t been all that bad.
UB might not allow sacks, but the Monarchs should be able to bring a little bit of pressure and should hurry things along – the Bulls aren’t getting big things happening down the field.

For all of the good things Buffalo has done so far, it’s not taking the ball away. Old Dominion doesn’t have giveaway problems – it has to be +2 to get pull this off at home.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Old Dominion hasn’t played anyone its own size yet. The win over Hampton wasn’t a problem, but Buffalo will be a good test to see just how far the program has to go.

Buffalo will grind it out with the rushing attack and try to play around throwing against the ODU secondary that’s playing well. It won’t be a thing of beauty, but the MAC side will take it.

Coastal Carolina (2-0) vs Buffalo (1-1) Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Can Coastal Carolina be patient enough to let the downfield plays develop?

The blocking has been wonderful so far, the offense has been rolling, and there hasn’t been a hint of drama over the first two games. Against Buffalo, though, the big plays through the air will be there as long as QB Grayson McCall gets a little time.

Brilliant in the first two games – averaging close to 13 yards per pass while completing 83% of his throws – McCall needs to go Adrian Martinez against UB. The Nebraska quarterback ran well and hit enough big bombs to open up the attack, averaging close to 15 yards per throw.

Buffalo might grind, but Coastal Carolina will hit fast.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Buffalo Will Win

It was a rough run in the 28-3 loss to Nebraska, but the Bulls really do have the pieces in place to be a factor in the MAC race and to pull off a game like this.

Coastal Carolina has been flawless so far in wins over Citadel and Kansas, but it’s not owning the clock and it hasn’t been pressed yet. There’s going to be a problem if it only has the ball for around 25 minutes.

UB has the back in Kevin Marks who can take over the game early if QB Kyle Vantrease is hitting his throws. Kansas might not have been great in the 49-22 loss against the Chanticleers, but it averaged close to five yards per carry.

The Bull offense is great on third downs, has yet to give up a sack, and is wonderful at controlling the clock.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

See Buffalo vs. Nebraska.

Coastal Carolina runs a different style of attack, but it’ll do to the Bulls exactly what the Huskers did. Run enough to keep things moving, wait for it … wait for it … boom. The home runs will be there with the passing game.

Buffalo has the ability to make this a fight, though, and it’ll run well enough to keep this in range into the fourth quarter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Nebraska (1-1) vs Buffalo (1-0) Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls came up with a nearly perfect performance in the first game under Maurice Linguist. They ripped through Wagner 69-7 – getting up 62-0 before giving up a late score – and they’ve got the ability to pull this off against a very, very shaky Nebraska.

Buffalo needed to get the passing game tuned up. Kyle Vantrease hit 15-of-19 passes. The running game had to show it could go on without Jaret Patterson. The 312 yards and seven scores weren’t a problem.

The pass rush was dominant, there weren’t any turnovers, and the team was in total control. Yeah, it was against Wagner, but there wasn’t even the slightest bit of a blip.

The team is ready.

Nebraska had its own nearly-perfect performance last week in a 52-7 win over Fordham, but the playmakers still have to prove they can produce against a decent D.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Nebraska Will Win

Nebraska sure as shoot could’ve used the Fordham game before playing Illinois, instead of the other way around.

That was the Husker team everyone has been waiting for, and it’s possible it just took a little bit to get the timing down and the live practice time in place.

Again, yeah, it was Fordham, but the running game was great, Adrian Martinez was nearly perfect, and the downfield passing game clicked.

Buffalo might have been great last week, but now it has to deal with Martinez – even with the loss to Illinois, he’s coming into his own. The Husker receiving weapons have started to emerge, RB Markese Stepp should get going early, and …

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Be very, very careful with this, Nebraska.

Yeah, the win over Fordham was a breeze, but the Rams came up with a few good runs, the Huskers probably won’t hit five yards per carry against the UB D, and this is going to be way more of a grind than the home faithful might like.

It’s going to come down to the mistakes. Nebraska shot itself in the foot against Illinois, and it turned it over twice against Fordham. It’ll screw up just enough for Buffalo to stay in this late, but Martinez will bail the team out with one good late scoring drive to finally put it away.
