Buffalo vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls might be struggling to start the season – there are forces against you when when you lose at home to Holy Cross on a Hail Mary – but the passing game worked last week, the team has yet to turn the ball over, and it’s got the makeup to do a whole lot more with the running game.

Coastal Carolina is getting lit up through the air – Army was able to go off on the Chanticleer secondary … ARMY – and it took five takeaways to save the team in a shootout against Gardner-Webb.

Just don’t make a slew of big mistakes, grind the running game, and see what happens.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Coastal Carolina is controlling the clock.

It was able to beat Army at its own game by owning the pace, and Grayson McCall and the passing game were great last week keeping up with Gardner-Webb.

The special teams have been great, the offense is efficient, and overall, the team should be able to dominate the tempo and keep the UB O off the field.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Gardner-Webb game was a tad disturbing, but Coastal Carolina will be more balanced this week, the ground game will start working again, and Buffalo will sputter a bit too often to keep it close.

Buffalo vs Holy Cross Game Preview

Why Holy Cross Will Win

The Crusaders had to battle, but they came up with a nice 31-17 win over Merrimack to start the season.

The offense was almost perfectly balanced, controlling the clock wasn’t a problem, and the No. 1 defense in the FCS last year held the Warriors to just 280 yards with two takeaways.

Buffalo has to prove it can consistently move the ball. It struggled to get anything down the field in the 31-10 loss to Maryland, and running on Holy Cross isn’t going to be easy.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls have enough good offensive parts to pound away a bit.

Cole Snyder is a decent enough passer to keep the chains moving, the defensive front should get into the backfield better than it did against the Terps, and Holy Cross will be more efficient than explosive.

Buffalo has to beat the Crusaders at their game by grinding out drives. The running game is about to be fair stronger after being held in check for 108 yards.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Look out.

Holy Cross has the exact right makeup and style to pull off the upset. Buffalo will grind its way to a win, but it’s going to need to catch a few breaks, the offense has to find something down the field, and getting behind will be a death blow.

It will take a few fourth quarter field goals to pull away, and then a late touchdown will make things easier.

CFN Week 2 Predictions

Maryland vs Buffalo Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The UB defense has the upside to be much stronger right away, especially on the line.

The Bulls have depth, experience, and the interior pass rushing should be there at times against the Terp ground game. James Patterson is one of the best linebackers Maryland will deal with all season, the secondary got help from the transfer portal, and overall there’s just enough in place to keep the high-powered Terp O from going off.

On the other side, the Bull running game will good enough to control the clock at times, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Maryland Will Win

The Maryland offense should strike quickly and with a whole lot of big plays.

It starts with the best offensive line the program has had in years with all five starters back to pave the way for a few tough, quick backs.

Buffalo has to prove its run defense can hold up, but it’ll be the Maryland passing game that will set the tempo. Buffalo might be steady offensively, but it’s not going to bring the downfield passing pop to keep up if the Terps get out to a hot start.

The line will give Taulia Tagovailoa time to work, the NFL-caliber receivers should be able to shine right away, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

The Maryland defense will come up with a good day.

The offense will take center stage, and the defensive front will get shoved around a little too much at times, but overall the D will do a decent job of getting off the field when Buffalo has to come up with big third down throws.

It’ll be a great start for the Terps, Buffalo will push back with a few scores, but there won’t be a whole lot of sweating.

Buffalo Bulls Preview 2022

It wasn’t how things were supposed to go.

Buffalo was coming off a 6-1 2020 season with an appearance in the MAC Championship and a bowl win over Marshall. It was the third straight winning season and the fourth straight with at least six wins.

But just as the program was getting comfortable as one of the conference’s superpowers, head coach Lance Leipold left for Kansas, Maurice Linguist took over, and the team came up with a rough 4-8 season with four straight losses to close.

The offense still worked, the ground game was good, and the defense had a few positives even though it was a rough year without any consistency.

Linguist has a ton of work to do to build up the talent level – seven offensive starters are done – but there’s a good base on defense to work around and there are enough winnable games to expect a bounceback year.

Or, at least hope for an improvement.

Buffalo Bulls Preview 2022: Offense

The offense couldn’t impose its rushing will like it did in past seasons, but it wasn’t all that bad. The O averaged well over 400 yards per game with the ground game accounting for almost half of that.

The passing attack was hit-or-miss over the years when the team was winning – everything revolved around the ground game – but it needs to be more efficient. There has to be more happening down the field and the turnovers have to stop, but for all of the problems, UB led the MAC in third down conversions.

It all starts with the tackles. The interior of the offensive line should be fine, but the group that was among the best in the MAC in pass protection and keeping down the tackles for loss needs the transfer portal and some key backups to make a difference.

The ground game lost leading rusher Dylan McDuffie to Georgia Tech, and Kevin Marks was never able to break through with the big season expected. The attack will work around Ron Cook, a speedy kick returner who ran for 377 yards, but it needs more options and bulk.

Quarterback Kyle Vantrease is done, but the passing game isn’t starting from scratch. Senior Matt Myers adds more of a rushing element to the mix and he has the starting experience, but the offense needs more big things happening down the field. Myers just has to keep things moving.

The receiving corps gets back leading receiver Quian Williams, a former Eastern Michigan Eagle who made 63 grabs last year, and Jamari Gassett isn’t a bad No. 2 speed option.

Buffalo Bulls Preview 2022: Defense

The defense should be stronger. It didn’t come up with enough takeaways, it didn’t hold up in strange spots – it got ripped up by Bowling Green? – and running games did too much shoving around.

A nice base of six starters are back with a nice blend of MAC star power and options in the right spots, starting with …

The defensive front might be the team’s biggest strength. The line is one of the few areas on the team with plenty of depth and a good rotation. Yes, the run defense has to be better, but Daymond Williams is a good nose tackle to work everything around. He’s almost 300 pounds and should once again be among the MAC’s best interior pass rushers.

James Patterson might be the best player in the MAC. The veteran linebacker will take over everything in the 4-2-5 alignment, but the options and rotation has to fill in next to him. Shaun Dolac made plays in his first year, but the defense needs more parts to fight against the run.

The secondary got help from the transfer portal to boost up an already good situation. It’s going to take fall camp to get all five parts in place, and not having big-hitting safety Cory Gross hurts, but Marcus Fuqua should be one of the team’s leading tacklers. The safeties are fine, but the corners have to emerge.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Lew Nichols, Soph. Central Michigan

Coming off a strong 2020 averaging close to seven yards per carry with over 500 rushing yards, he was all but unstoppable in 2021.

The 5-10, 220-pounder led the nation with 1,848 rushing yards and over 142 per game with 16 rushing scores and two receiving touchdowns. Steady, he came up with over 130 yards in each of the last eight games, and once again he’s going to be the featured star of the attack.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jamal Hines, Sr. Toledo

The three-time All-MAC defender – First Team last season – is a true hybrid who can do a little of everything right. He’s an outside linebacker, but he’s really an edge rushing defensive end who’ll live behind the line for stretches.

The 6-3, 250-pounder made 88 tackles with ten sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and broke up eight passes. With all his experience and all his skill, he’s about to be an all-star gamewrecker again.

It’s the MAC. It’s the conference where worst-to-first is the norm, with 2020 winless Northern Illinois winning the MAC championship in 2021, everyone can beat anyone else, and Toledo will end up somewhere in the middle of it all.

It’s about as settled as the league has been in a long time with the strength still in the West, Buffalo about to be better in the East, and with Akron and Bowling Green still questionable.

Again, though, it’s the MAC. The Zips or Falcons could end up in Detroit in January playing for the title.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Buffalo vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls desperately need to end their season on a high note.

It’s ben a rough run for the defense, but to pull this off and end 5-7 instead of 4-8, it’s all about controlling the clock. Buffalo has a terrific running game that averages close to 200 yards per game and converts on third down after third down.

They lead the MAC in sacks, they’re great in time of possession, and  on the flip side, Ball State doesn’t do nearly enough to get behind the line, it doesn’t control the clock, and the run D is spotty, to be nice.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Ball State Will Win

The Buffalo defense has gone bye-bye.

It struggled throughout the season and hasn’t been consistent, but just when it needed to rise up it crashed, allowing over 1,500 yards and 134 points over the last three games.

The Ball State defense hasn’t been any better lately, but the offense has the running game to point on a Bull run defense that should be a whole lot better considering the pressure it generates from the outside.

Yes, UB is great at rushing the passer, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Ball State offense is good enough to give all the parts of the passing game time to work.

Both teams are having major problems in what appeared to be promising seasons, but Ball State is still alive for a bowl game. It’s not going to repeat as the MAC champion, but going to a bowl again and avoiding a losing regular season will be the extra juice it needs.

Buffalo’s defense will be a tad worse than Ball State’s
