Ohio State faces largest deficit of the season, down 21-7 at half to Wisconsin

Ohio State looked stagnant and faced their largest deficit of the season yet will enter halftime down just 14-7.

Ohio State has its work cut out for it against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Badgers came to play. Two things dominated the first half. Ohio State’s inability to get off the field on third and long, and the Buckeyes’ inability to solve the Wisconsin defense. Both of those led to Ohio State’s largest deficit of the season at the break.

Another interesting development is little mention of Chase Young. Any game without his impact on it may not turn out well for the nation’s best team.

That said, here’s a rundown of how the half went for Ohio State.

To start, Wisconsin won the coin toss and chose to receive, wanting to blast Ohio State in the mouth early knowing that Ohio State would return the fair. Well, the Badgers did just that.

They, after a pair of first downs, gave the ball to Jonathan Taylor for a 44-yard touchdown. They went five plays and under three minutes to take a quick 7-0 lead.

Then, the mighty Ohio State offense took the field for the first time. Sadly, the Buckeyes didn’t succeed on a fourth and 7 after driving for a few first downs. It was justified attempt though as a field goal at that point would’ve been at least a 50-yarder.

Wisconsin punted on their next drive, pinning Ohio State within its own ten yard line.

J.K. Dobbins quickly changed that and then Austin Mack made his presence felt with a stellar 34-yard gain. Ohio State’s second drive started off well yet a third and ten stalled another drive as Fields was pressed and sacked out of field goal range.

With the clock under two minutes in the first and the Badgers up seven, Ohio State punted for a touchback. The quarter ended 7-0 with Wisconsin on its own 41.

Wisconsin continued to march down the field, completing a difficult third and long en route to entering Ohio State territory yet again. A missed Jonathan Taylor third down set up a fourth and five which Wisconsin converted on.

Jack Coan then ran in a 14-yard touchdown to extend Wisconsin’s lead to 14. It certainly wasn’t the first 21 minutes that Ohio State had dreamed up as it saw itself in the largest deficit of the season early in the second.

That said, early in the second, Taylor, a potential first-round, did surpass 6,000 career yards.

Ohio State got the ball back with around ten minutes left in the half. After three pitiful attempts, Ohio State faked a punt and was able to pick up a first down where the offense finally started to gain some steam.

Two 20-plus yard gains put Ohio State on 1st and goal. Justin Fields eventually fumbled, something Ohio State has had a clear problem with this season. With under four minutes left though, the Buckeyes were able to get the ball back.

Ohio State drove, with a few third-down conversions, and put points on the board before half. But just when you thought it had some momentum going headed to the locker room with under one minute in the half, Jonathan Taylor ripped off a big run. Then Wisconsin had another big play through the air and scored a TD just before half to go up 21-7.

The Buckeyes are now left looking for answers and will need to make some adjustments to find a way to win this one. Ohio State is in serious jeopardy of losing its grip on what has been a fantastic season.

WATCH: Ohio State makes gutsy fake punt call in own half

Ohio State made a ridiculously gutsy fake punt call in their own territory down 14-0, but it worked out.

Ohio State made a ridiculously risky call on fourth down in their own territory. However, it panned out. A fake punt turned into a first down, and it helped give Ohio State some momentum.

Day is playing gutsy.

On 4th & 9, he opted to attempt a fake punt deep in his own territory, something most coaches wouldn’t even consider in a game of this magnitude. Punter Drue Chrisman rewarded him though.

He made a quality 21-yard completion. This all started by a stuffed J.K. Dobbins run then a sack on Fields. The Buckeyes were in a pinch, but they thankfully caught the Badgers off guard.

Ohio State, with two more 20-plus yard gains, was able to get 1st and goal. That didn’t matter though as a fumble gave it back to the Badgers, down 14-0, Ohio State’s largest deficit of the season.

So far Wisconsin has come in with a great game plan and is making Ohio State work very hard to move the ball. It may take some more gusty play calling to get this game in the win column for the Buckeyes.

Tom Brady pays up on bet, wears Ohio State gear in O-H-I-O formation

Former Michigan QB Tom Brady paid up on a bet with his former Ohio State teammates by wearing Buckeye gear while throwing up an O-H-I-O.

Former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady has to be getting tired of his former team laying an egg against its arch-rival Ohio State. Year after year it seems, he has to pay up on bets when Michigan gets eviscerated by the Buckeyes.

Such is the case again in 2019. The Wolverines came into The Game with confidence flying high, thinking they could hang with Ohio State and get the monkey off the back of Jim Harbaugh and all the maize and blue wearing fans out there.

After a score of 56-27 later, that appears to have been a little overly optimistic yet again. Rinse and repeat in defeat.

To pay up this year, Brady shared himself a photo of himself with four others wearing an Ohio State shirt while holding up the iconic O-H-I-O like a good sport. So who did he lose the bet to? It’s assumed to be former Buckeye player Nate Ebner or John Simon who are also on the end in the photo, and also a member of the New England Patriots.

And, look, we’ve also got a Chase Winovich sighting as well. So much for that revenge tour 2.0 for the former Wolverine defensive end.

The more things change, the more they stay the same eh Tom?

WATCH: IndyCar helps Ohio State make incredible entrance into Indianapolis

Ohio State made a splashy entrance as it arrived in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin.

Ohio State knows how to make an entrance. And that doesn’t mean heading on to the field. The Buckeyes had the perfect escort into Indianapolis as they arrived on buses for the Big Ten championship game Saturday.

Check it out as Ohio State was led into Indy Friday by an IndyCar!

Series driver Graham Rahal has already paid tribute to the Buckeyes during a race in 2015, wearing this fantastic helmet.

Rahal had this to say then:

“It is beyond awesome,” Rahal said of the helmet.

It was done by designer Austin Polen with an assist from Ohio State football director of player personnel Mark Pantoni, who provided facsimiles of the decals, such as the Buckeyes leaves and color schemes.

“I had this concept that, with Ohio State having won the national championship and us being in the championship battle here, it would be fun to come home and do something I haven’t done before,” Rahal said. “This thing, it is very accurate.”

The helmet bears the No. 15, a reference to Rahal’s car number and also the jersey number of standout running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Buckeye Battle Cry: Can Ohio State head coach Ryan Day keep this level of success five years from now?

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is having a fantastic season in his first head coaching gig. Where will he stand five years from now?

It’s always tough to replace a legend.

That’s what Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was tasked at doing when Urban Meyer handed him the whistle after a victory in the 2019 Rose Bowl. Since then, all Day has done is win every single game by double digits and put his team in position to win the Big Ten Championship again. After that, a spot in the College Football Playoff likely awaits.

So, needless to say, Day is likely to get a good review on his year-end assessment from Gene Smith. There may also be a decent raise in there somewhere in the very near future.

But that’s this year. Many won’t get on the Day train until he shows he can do these types of things on a consistent level with his own players.

And that’s were we are with this week’s Buckeye Battle Cry Roundtable discussion. We asked a few of our writers to weigh in on what kind of job he’ll have done after five years. Will it be more of the same, or will this level of success be hard to keep up with?

We’ll open it up to Mark first.

Ohio State vs. Wisconsin: 3 reasons the Badgers could give the Buckeyes problems in the Big Ten Championship Game

Here’s three reasons why Wisconsin could give Ohio State some issues in the Big Ten Championship Game Saturday night.

Ohio State is all set to travel to Indianapolis to take part in the Big Ten Championship Game for the third-straight year. It was successful in the last two and looking to become the first league team to take home a trophy three years in a row.

Standing in its way is Wisconsin, also a team familiar with Indianapolis. The Badgers have more appearances in the Big Ten Championship Game than any other team in the league, but have just two titles, and haven’t won any since 2012.

These two already met once in the regular season, with the Buckeyes winning going away in Columbus in late October. Can the Badgers find a way to make this one more competitive and even (gasp) win the thing?

Here’s three reasons Wisconsin could give Ohio State some problems Saturday night.

Dallas Cowboys reportedly have interest in Urban Meyer

While it’s all just pure speculation at this point, the Dallas Cowboys reportedly have interest in Urban Meyer.

While there’s no reason to expect he’d return to coaching, Urban Meyer is apparently being sought after by the Dallas Cowboys. Let’s just say it’d be shocking to see him return to coaching.

That said, interest at the NFL level is never something to turn your nose up at. It’s not even that it’s the NFL level but rather the Dallas Cowboys, arguably the most popular franchise in league history.

Meyer, who left Ohio State after last season, is well-respected, making him a perfect fit for the Cowboys.

According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, the Cowboys, who are 6-7 after a stunning loss to Chicago in Week 14, have “very real interest” in Meyer.

Meyer has been a top interest for many teams in search of a new head coach throughout the past year, and as the growing frustrations with Jason Garrett grow, the shouts for a new head coach will become increasingly heard.

Meyer, who coached Ohio State from 2012-2018, doesn’t have NFL experience, but he did make a bit of news by saying he’d have to take a hard look if the Cowboys’ job was offered.

Meyer has three collegiate national titles and is a stellar 187-32 throughout his career. He’s the quintessential target for most organizations, and if there is one that brings him out of retirement, it could be this one.

Nonetheless, it’d still be shocking to see his return.

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young wins Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young has won the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football Award that recognizes the best player in the Big Ten.

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young has been awarded the Chicago Tribune’s prestigious Silver Football Award that goes to the best football player in the Big Ten annually. It has been handed out annually since 1924 and is a result of a vote by all of the Big Ten head coaches.

Young is still up for a slew of national awards after already taking home the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year earlier this week. With 16.5 sacks on the season, and highlight after highlight of dominating moments so far in 2019, Young is still a finalist for the Walter Camp, Bronko Nagurski, Bednarik, Maxwell, and Ted Hendricks Awards.

By winning the 2019 Silver Football Award, Young adds to a run of six of the last eight awards going to Ohio State.

Ohio State releases depth chart and availability information for Big Ten Championship Game

Ohio State released the depth chart, availability and injuries for the Big Ten Championship Game against Wisconsin.

Every Friday Ohio State releases information on the depth chart and player availability for the upcoming game. In this case, it’s for the Big Ten Championship Game against Wisconsin. It’s one of just a handful of conference title games that will help shape the College Football Playoff.

By the looks of the depth chart, the Buckeyes might be as healthy as they’ve been all year. That’s outstanding for being at the tail end of the season, but also probably has something to do with players being able to rest a bit when things have gotten out of hand at times.

Justin Fields appears all ready to go — at least on paper. How healthy and effective he is on a sprained MCL remains to be seen.
