Three days of football!

Jeremy and Matt go through the three-day weekend of Mountain West football games. They start on Thursday night with Utah State traveling to BYU for the Wagon Wheel and it might just be the last time they play for a long time with the Cougars going to the NFL.

A formerly great looking game on the schedule between San Diego State seems more like a pair of floundering teams trying to figure things out. Air Force hosts a bad Navy team and the game of the week might just be San Jose State at Wyoming. Plus, New Mexico. and UNLV could be an interesting matchup between these two teams that are improving.

Mountain West Football: Key Newcomers Atop Each Week 5 Depth Chart

Nine Mountain West teams will play in Week 5. We identify new names atop each depth chart who could be important.

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Which unfamiliar names are worth following?

Utah State — Poukesi Vakauta, DT

The Aggies defensive line has been hammered by injuries in the first month of the season, most notably with season-ending injuries to both Phillip Paea and Seni Tuiaki, which will only put more pressure on those left standing like veteran Hale Motu’apuaka and Vakauta, who have battled the bug themselves through recent weeks. Vakauta has only started one game so far and played no more than 13 snaps, but he could be pushed to do more starting with the BYU contest without much proven depth left behind him.

San Diego State — Aaron Greene, TE

Greene has started the last two games for the Aztecs but, for lack of a better term, has underwhelmed so far in 2022. He’s played between 16 and 34 snaps in each of the team’s four contests to date, but still has zero receptions and has struggled as a blocker with a PFF grade of 50.3 in run blocking. That could be problematic against a Boise State that might be beaten up a bit but still possesses plenty of talent to embrace a rock fight.

Boise State — Taylen Green, QB

Following the dismissal of offensive coordinator Tim Plough and the subsequent transfer portal departure of Hank Bachmeier, Green is now officially the man on the spot at a crucial juncture for the Broncos. He hasn’t seen the field since coming on in relief of Bachmeier against Oregon State back in Week 1, so while he’ll obviously bring a different skill set to bear as the new QB1, San Diego State just got finished making life difficult for a similar quarterback in Week 4, Toledo’s Dequan Finn, so the chess match will be fascinating to watch.

New Mexico — A.J. Haulcy, LOBO

With the recent news that veteran safety Tavian Combs will miss the rest of 2022 with a torn ACL, Haulcy is now the man on the spot at the ever-important LOBO position in Rocky Long’s defensive backfield. We already know the true freshman can be a playmaker, best evidenced by the fumble he forced for a touchback two weeks ago against UTEP, and he’s currently the second-highest overall graded safety in the Mountain West, according to Pro Football Focus, at 82.8. Big things could lie ahead for Haulcy in a key conference matchup against UNLV this Saturday.

UNLV — Nick Williams, WR

One of the major differences in this year’s Rebels offense is quality depth behind Kyle Williams at wide receiver and, coincidentally, no one is better proof of that than one of the other Williamses on the UNLV roster. A super senior transfer from Division II CSU-Pueblo, Nick Williams stepped up when starter Jeff Weimer was knocked out of commission in last Saturday’s game against Utah State and finished the day with three catches for 53 yards.

Though he has just seven catches to his name so far in 2022, three of them have gone for 20 or more yards. That kind of explosiveness could come in handy as the Rebels look to solve a seasoned New Mexico secondary that won’t be scared to play close in coverage.

Oh boy… the Mountain West might be in trouble for its bowl obligations. or so it seems that way on the surface. It is likely more that teams that usually don’t go bowling will find a spot this week in our rankings.

Things seemingly are getting really dicey for defending champion Utah State Aggies; while San Diego State and Boise State are nearing that category of being fringe bowl teams.

Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier has decided to enter his name in the transfer portal, according to Bronco Nation News. This season has not been kind to Bachmeier and some of it has to do with more shuffling along the offensive line which was a big issue last season.

The Broncos are fresh off one of their worst losses ever in school history by falling to UTEP, 27-10. In that loss to the Miners, Bachmeier had a rough night completing just 13 of 34 passes for 93 yards with a touchdown.

Boise State make a coaching a move to relieve offensive coordinator Tim Plough of his duties and elevate Dirk Koetter from offensive analyst to offensive coordinator. Koetter is also a former Boise State coach.

Bachmeier has started since he was a true freshman all the way back in 2019 and since he has played fewer than four games this year means he can redshirt. Then including the freebie COVID-19 year, Bachmeier will have two years of eligibility.

Players can not officially enter the transfer portal until the day after the College Football Playoff matchups are set which is Monday, Dec. 5.

In four starts this season for Boise State, Bachmeier completed just 54.3% of his passes for 497 yards and had six touchdowns and three interceptions. For his career, Bachmeier started 29 games.

This ushers in the Taylen Green era for Boise State and assumingly will be starting against San Diego State this Friday night at home.. Green has played sparingly under center this season for the Broncos. He has completed 19 of 28 passes for 155 yards with an interception, plus he has ran for 102 yards on 11 rushes with a pair of touchdowns.

Trying to figure out who is good this year

Jeremy and Matt go through a Week 4 of Mountain West football that had some of the good teams perform at very low points. There are some bright spots with Air Force, San Jose State and UNLV all improving their play or bouncing back from a not-so-great Week 3.

Not quite what was expected.

Also-rans

Colorado State

Things haven’t come together as planned at Fort Air Raid. The Rams have scored a meager 10.8 points per game, ahead of only UMass among FBS teams, and averaged 4.03 yards per play, which ranks 129th in the country, while quarterback Clay Millen has been battered week after week to the point that he finally got knocked out of the contest with Sacramento State in Week 4.

It isn’t all doom and gloom in Fort Collins, as Tory Horton, Mohamed Kamara, and Jack Howell have all shined despite the difficult circumstances, but it may serve CSU fans well to recall that head coach Jay Norvell had to absorb a 3-9 campaign in his first year at Nevada back in 2017, too, before the Wolf Pack got on track.

Hawaii

It’s been a bumpy ride for Timmy Chang’s Warriors in the first month of his tenure, with a win over Duquesne and lopsided losses to Michigan, New Mexico State, Vanderbilt, and Western Kentucky by an average of 37.5 points. Running back Dedrick Parson has been a bright spot on offense, but no one could have predicted it would take five games for Hawaii to secure its first passing touchdown.

The defense, meanwhile, has been active about getting its hands on the football with seven takeaways in five games, but they also rank 128th among FBS teams in allowing 7.33 yards per play to date. It’s not out of the question they could steal another win or two against other also-rans in conference play, but it may just as easily be a long Year Zero on the islands.

Nevada

It was nice while it lasted, but the Wolf Pack have come back to earth with a three-game losing streak in which they’ve posted a not-so-nice -69 point differential. While they’re still tied for first in the Mountain West with 11 total takeaways, Nevada has been shut out on that front in the last two games, as well.

Don’t mistake the diminishing returns for bottoming all the way out like others in the Mountain West, though. Nate Cox appears to be the answer at quarterback while the running back duo of Toa Taua and Devonte Lee has been solid, but the explosiveness on offense just hasn’t been there yet with only 13 plays of 20 or more yards in five games. Dom Peterson has continued to ball out as expected, too, while the secondary has at least proven it can be opportunistic, so the Wolf Pack have at least a few things going for them which could lead to a surprising result or two in the next couple months.

New Mexico

Of all the teams in this part of the column, the Lobos are the likeliest candidate to be a real headache for those expected to contend. That’s because, even after being drubbed by LSU in Week 4, UNM still ranks 69th in the country by defensive SP+. For the sake of context, San Diego State currently sits at 56th on that side of the ball while Fresno State is 80th.

The bigger question is whether the offense will ever come around. In terms of offensive SP+, the Lobos are dead last in the country; if you prefer yards per play, UNM is 126th after four games with an average of 4.21. Their running game has flashed potential here and there, most notably from Sherod White and Christian Washington, but it’ll take a group effort to truly play the spoiler role.

What a crazy week in the Mountain West. Teams that have been bad are now good: Looking at UNLV. Plus, vice versa: Boise State.

This will make for an interesting Mountain West season with possibly no elite teams but a bunch of good ones and everyone beats each other up.

So, in our five-word recap, it will be quite interesting to read what fans say and react week to week.

Before we get to ours, here are how fans responded.

Colorado State: Norvell has work to do

Fresno State: Can’t lose on a bye

Hawaii: Warriors got a passing TD!

Mountain West Football: Week 4 Winners And Losers

Who were the big winners and losers from Week 4 of Mountain West football play? We make our picks for who shined and who disappointed.

Mountain West Football: Week 4 Winners And Losers

We take a look at the Mountain West’s winners and losers from Week 4 of college football.

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Encouragements and letdowns from the week that was.

It was another mixed bag of a weekend across the Mountain West in Week 4, as the conference posted just two victories in seven non-conference games while the race to the championship game got a little clearer in both divisions. Some results were decidedly more of the same while others surprised, which made choosing winners and losers from Friday and Saturday a difficult task.

Winners

1. UNLV linebacker Austin Ajiake

The Rebels offense had another solid performance on the road at Utah State, but it was defense which put UNLV over the top against the Aggies and no one played a bigger role on that front than Ajiake. Not only did the senior post a team-high 11 total tackles, he had a tackle for loss and an interception, as well. One of last year’s more underappreciated athletes, Ajiake deserves more attention for his role in the team’s ongoing leap forward.

2. San Diego State running back Jordan Byrd

The Aztecs had what can only be described as another lackluster offensive performance on Saturday afternoon against Toledo, but the veteran Byrd gave them just enough of a spark to survive a late Rockets rally. He had two runs for a total of 80 yards to open the scoring in the first quarter, then scored the game-winning touchdown from one yard out with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter.

On the day, Byrd averaged 7.2 yards per carry while the rest of the San Diego State offense averaged 4.07 yards on 41 other plays. With that in mind, he probably deserves more touches as the season progresses.

3. San Jose State

It wasn’t a flawless performance on Saturday night at CEFCU Stadium — the Spartans converted just 3-of-12 third down tries and had 11 penalties — but San Jose State got its vengeance against Western Michigan, after all. The defense forced two first quarter turnovers on downs which turned into 10 points on offense, finishing the night by holding the Broncos to 3.3 yards per play and 206 yards of total offense.

The offense, meanwhile, bounced back from its frustrations at Auburn to average 7.6 yards per play and convert on 4-of-5 red zone opportunities, totaling 20 points. Running back Kairee Robinson had one of the best games of his career with 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns, Chevan Cordeiro had the best game of his season-to-date with 250 passing yards and two touchdowns, and Justin Lockhart and Charles Ross brought explosiveness to the passing game. In a conference race that suddenly feels wide open, don’t overlook the Spartans.

Losers

1. Boise State offensive coordinator Tim Plough

Despite some shuffling on the offensive line, the Broncos offense disappeared once again on Friday night against UTEP but, this time, it did so in a near-historic fashion. Hank Bachmeier completed just 13-of-34 passes for 93 yards and one touchdown while George Holani finished with 75 rushing yards on 16 attempts, and the offense as a whole put up its fewest yards of total offense since 1997.

That poor performance forced the hand of head coach Andy Avalos, who relieved Plough of his coordinator duties the following afternoon. Whether new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter will be an improvement or not remains to be seen, but the Broncos are in unfamiliar territory as they look to find some steady footing headed into conference play.

2. Utah State’s offense

Sloppy. Undisciplined. Erratic. The Aggies had their chances to keep things close at home against UNLV on Saturday but wasted them with 11 penalties, their third straight game with that many flags, for 93 yards and five Logan Bonner interceptions. Utah State also struggled yet again on third downs, converting just 4-of-13 opportunities, so despite a valiant effort from Justin McGriff (six catches, 103 yards, one touchdown), the contest served as another harsh reminder that last year’s path to the championship was always going to be a hard one to follow a second time.

3. Hawaii

One step forward, two steps back. That’s probably the best way to describe the Warriors’ lopsided loss to New Mexico State on Saturday seeing as the offense had its best overall game of the year so far, posting 411 yards at 5.4 yards per play and finally completing a pass for a touchdown, but the defense took a big step back and allowed the Aggies to run wild. NMSU wore the Hawaii run defense down to the tune of 357 rushing yards, the team’s most since 2001, and the Warriors had just one tackle for loss in the process.

A big and much-needed change.

After suffering one of the worst defeats in program history on Friday night, the Boise State Broncos announced this afternoon that offensive coordinator Tim Plough has been relieved of his duties.

In a release put out by head coach Andy Avalos, he acknowledged that “this was a difficult decision, but [he believed] it is in the best interest of our program” to replace Plough with Dirk Koetter, the former Broncos head coach who has served as an offensive analyst in 2022 after spending two years as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2019 and 2020.

Plough, who came to Boise from UC Davis, oversaw an offense that averaged 5.26 yards per play in 2021, which ranked ninth in the Mountain West, and had ranked eight in the conference through four games with just 4.46 yards per play. After the UTEP Miners held the Broncos to just 177 yards last night, however, the calls for a change became too great to turn back any longer.
