Arizona vs Cal Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The win over North Dakota State was massive.

That’s not just any old FCS team that Arizona took down. That’s probably the eventual national champion that made its name by taking out FBS teams to go along with all of the playoff success.

The Wildcats held up. They didn’t turn the ball over, they got hit with one penalties – flags haven’t been a problem – and the passing game was effective enough to keep things moving in the 31-28 win.

Even with the loss to a high-powered Mississippi State team and it’s passing game, the secondary has been great, there’s no real worry about the Cal ground game, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Cal Will Win

Cal was within a bobbled ball away from possibly being 3-0.

Granted, it would’ve taken overtime against Notre Dame if the last gasp Hail Mary was answered, but the team held up well, the defense was solid, and now it has a chance to get off to a good start in the Pac-12 with a home game it must win.

The Cal offense has yet to lose a fumble, there aren’t enough penalties to matter, and the two interceptions didn’t make a difference. Arizona might be good, but it needs help with a few breaks, and it’s not going to get them.

In an even game, it might be as simple as this – who has the better field position?

Arizona has one of the worst punting games in the Pac-12 so far, Cal leads all conference teams averaging 42.6 yards per boot, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Does Cal have enough offense to push through?

Mississippi State has one of the nation’s best passing games – that got it done against the Wildcats. North Dakota State has one of the best offenses in the FCS – that made it interesting with close to 300 rushing yards. Cal was able to throw well on UC Davis and UNLV, but Arizona is a bit more efficient than those two.

Don’t expect fireworks. Neither offense will be able to open it up, the Cal defense will be just a wee bit better at getting off the field, and special teams will make a big difference.

Arizona vs North Dakota State Game Preview

Why North Dakota State Will Win

North Dakota State is still North Dakota State.

It’s still the best team in the FCS – or close to it – rolling through Drake and North Carolina A&T by a combined score of 99-17, and it’s all working. The offensive line has been outstanding, the O hasn’t turned the ball over, and the defense isn’t allowing a thing through the air.

This is a razor sharp team that allowed just two touchdowns so far and hasn’t been pushed – it’s just that good.

Arizona will have a tough time generating a pass rush, the offense has turned it over five times, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona has to grind this out.

Jayden de Laura and the passing game have been solid so far, and the running game worked well in the stunning win over San Diego State. It’s been rough to own the time of possession battle in the first two games, but this is the game when the Cats should control the clock and the tempo.

Even with the problems against Mississippi State, the line play has been far, far better than 2021, there are more dangerous playmakers who can stretch the field, and …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

North Dakota State is way too sharp.

Arizona will try to get tough up front, and ball control will mean everything in an attempt to the Bison offense on the sidelines.

It won’t work.

The deep backfield will keep rotating in productive backs, Cam Miller will get the time needed to spread the passing game around, and the team will take over in the second half with a few nice scoring drives and tough stops to make Arizona press. That’s when the turnovers will come.

Mississippi State vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

That’s how this thing is supposed to work.

Mississippi State and the Mike Leach offense has the upside to throw for a gajillion yards and crank up the production in bulk – at least past Leach teams at other places did that – but the 49-23 win over Memphis was different.

It was dominant, steady, and consistent without having to do anything crazy.

The offense seemed like it hit every third down chance – it was 11-of-13 – and it seemed like it was always on the field, because it was. The Bulldogs had the ball for over 41 minutes, Will Rogers threw for 450 yards and five touchdowns, and the defense didn’t have to sweat.

Arizona might have looked fantastic in the 38-20 win over San Diego State, but even with a former Washington State quarterback in place, it doesn’t have the offense to keep up if the Bulldogs do that for a second week in a row.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Arizona Will Win

This is about as odd a game as it gets for Mississippi State.

Mike Leach might be used to Pac-12 life from his Washington State days, but kickoff will be 10:00 pm Starkville, Mississippi time. The weather should be absolutely perfect – mid-70s – but will Arizona have any sort of a home field advantage?

These isn’t your 2021 Arizona Wildcats.

Head coach Jedd Fisch loaded up with a brand new team with big-time playmakers. Jayden de Laura from Wazzu is an upgrade at quarterback from anything the program has had over the last few years, and UTEP WR Jacob Cowing – eight catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns – is the game-breaker the team was lacking.

The lines are night-and-day better, the defense pitched a brilliant game in the 38-20 win at San Diego State – one of the touchdowns allowed was from the special teams – and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Mississippi State’s lines are stronger, the playmakers are better, and the team will get past a few big plays from the Arizona attack with more steady production.

It might not be the performance the team came up with against Memphis, but it won’t be too far off.

It’ll be a fun late night show from both sides with the Bulldogs pulling away in the third quarter.

Arizona vs San Diego State Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

This is a much, much better Arizona team than the one that struggled so much through last season.

The transfer portal had a whole lot to do with it, going through the growing pains last year played a big role, and upgrading key spots should mean everything with Washington State QB Jayden de Laura and WR Jacob Cowing soon to be the new stars.

This isn’t a high-powered San Diego State team. It has to win on toughness, the running game, and defense. With eight starters back for the Wildcats – and with decent size up front to hold up – the D is about to rise up against the power teams. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why San Diego State Will Win

This isn’t the defense you want to face if you’re trying to get the offense going.

The Wildcats have enough playmakers now at the skill spots to have a few nice moments, but can the generate a push against a defense that’s about to be among the best in the nation again?

The D lost a few key guys, but it made up for it with the addition of Justus Tavai from Hawaii to go along with his brother, Jonah. The line is about to be a brick wall again, the secondary can pop, and the offensive side has a quietly good receiving corps for Virginia Tech transfer QB Braxton Burmeister to work with.

But the real star of the show will be …

What’s Going To Happen

Snapdragon Stadium – San Diego State has its shiny new home to play in.

In a night-and-day different atmosphere, the Aztecs go from playing in front of friends and family in Carson, California, to having a showpiece, intimate, state-of-the-art stadium as part of a massive development plan.

Arizona will be far better this season, but it won’t be able to overcome the Aztec defense that will come up with third down stop after third down stop.

Pac-12 Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Pac-12 preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Forget all the monster changes, moves, and speculation about the future for a moment. This year should be a whole lot of fun for a few key reasons.

USC is going to be a blast – there’s going to be as much attention on the football teams, at least for a few months before expansion talk cranks up even more – and the divisions are going bye-bye.

There’s no more Pac-12 North and South with the goal to win the six-team division. Now the conference race comes down to who the top two teams are overall, and it should mean the season comes down to the last day of the regular season.

The schedules play a massive role.

Who misses USC? Who has to play Utah in Salt Lake City? Who has to travel late in the season, and who has to make a longer road trip? It all matters in the 2022 Pac-12 college football predictions for every game.

Pac-12 Coaches Against The Spread: Ranked From Best To Worst. Who Covers?

Pac-12 Football Coaches Against The Spread: Who are the best and worst Pac-12 coaches when it comes to covering?

How good are all of the Pac-12 head coaches against the spread? Going from best to worst, here’s who covers and who doesn’t.

How do all of the Pac-12 head coaches do against the spread, and on the road ATS, and going over on the point total?

If you like to invest, here’s the breakdown of ten of the 12 head coaches – Oregon’s Dan Lanning is in his first year as a head man, and we’re technically counting Washington State’s Jake Dickert as a first year coach since he’s going into his first full season.

One other note, with a few exceptions from the first year coaches who switched gigs – Lincoln Riley at USC and Kalen DeBoer at Washington – these stats reflect how all the coaches have done on their current Pac-12 teams.

Who covers – and sometimes more importantly – who doesn’t?

Arizona Wildcats Preview 2022

Baby steps.

Jedd Fisch had a complete overhaul to do when he took over as the head coach last season, and it started by trying play defense again at the University of Arizona.

Overall, the lines just weren’t there to hold up, the O was far worse than the D, and even when things sort of worked, there was an implosion of mistakes that screwed everything up. It took a COVID-depleted Cal to help the Wildcats get their one and only win, but things are different now. There’s a shot that for a huge improvement with a little bit of luck.

Arizona was all over the transfer portal, loaded up with a fantastic recruiting class, and now there’s actual depth to go along with what should be a far better starting 22. It’s not time to think Pac-12 Championship yet, but the fan base will finally have a more competitive team to get fired up about.

Arizona Wildcats Preview 2022: Offense

Injuries played a huge part in the 2021 disaster, and not getting enough from the line turned out to be the biggest issue. There wasn’t enough from the running game, the pass protection wasn’t there, and there wasn’t any scoring punch with the O hitting the 20 point mark just two times. That’s about to change.

Again, injuries were an issue. The quarterback situation was never quite settled, but that’s about to change with Washington State transfer Jayden de Laura coming in to start winging the ball around. He was a terrific get, and UTEP WR Jacob Cowing – 141 catches, 2,595 yards, 13 touchdowns averaging over 18 yards per grab for the Miners – might be even bigger. But …

Can the line give everyone time to work? Transfers and freshmen – like new recruit Jonah Savaiinaea at guard – should help the front five turn into a positive as the year goes on. Michael Wiley is a good veteran back with some nice freshmen behind him, but to keep this going, they need room to move.

Arizona Wildcats Preview 2022: Defense

The Arizona defense wasn’t great, but it was a whole lot better. Considering the offense didn’t help the cause in any way, finishing fifth in the Pac-12 in total D was a miracle.

No, the secondary wasn’t great, and the red zone defense was the worst in college football, but the defense wasn’t awful on third downs, it fought the good fight over and over again, and it allowed over 400 yards in total offense just five times after giving up that many in all five games in 2020 and 11 times in 12 2019 games.

Eight starters are expected back and, like the offense, the help is coming from the transfer portal and recruiting class.

There’s decent size up front and there’s a little bit of depth now. Kyon Barrs is the All-Pac-12 caliber nose for everything to work around, and the freshmen who took their lumps last year will form a good rotation on both sides. The pass rush has to come from the linebacking corps, and it starts with USC transfer Hunter Echols playing a big role. However …

Arizona likes to get as many defensive backs on the field as possible, and they can hit. Christian Young is a 6-3, 222-pound hybrid safety who works well in the Viper role, and the hope is for UCLA transfer DJ Warnell to shine as a nickel defender. The corner tandem of Christian Roland-Wallace and Treydan Stukes will quietly be good if the pass rush can help.

2022 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year

Caleb Williams, QB Soph. USC

It takes something special to standout among this group of Pac-12 quarterbacks, and the possible two best – throw in Washington State’s Cameron Ward, a transfer from Incarnate Word – and Williams have yet to take a snap in the conference.

Williams put on a show over the second half of last year running Lincoln Riley’s offense at Oklahoma, and now he’s joining the fun in Los Angeles with a loaded group around him. Last year he hit 65% of his passes for 1,912 yards and 21 scores with just four picks, and he ran for 442 yards and six scores. Get ready for him to take things to another level.

2022 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year

Noah Sewell, LB, Soph. Oregon

The big thumper in the middle of the Oregon linebacking corps made 114 tackles last year with four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss with five broken up passes, an interception, and with two forced fumbles. Now there’s a chance he does even more with the talent on both sides to take over at times.

If Justin Flowe can finally catch a break from the injuries, he’s one of the Pac-12’s best linebackers, and Mase Funa and Bradyn Swinson are going to be big-time, too. Everything will flow right into the middle for Sewell to clean up.
