Arizona Wildcats: Key To The 2022 Offense

Stop turning the ball over
The real key is the offensive line being better, but that’s already been brought up a jillion times in this. There’s that, and the O has to stop shooting itself in the foot.

Arizona had a real shot to push past Oregon, but five interceptions later in an avalanche of mistakes, and it was a 41-19 loss. The O gave it up multiple times in seven of the last ten games. The team might be better, but it has to be on the right side of the turnover margin. And that means …

Arizona Wildcats: Key To The 2022 Defense

Start taking the ball away
Yes, the defense really was a whole lot better than previous versions, but considering the offense was struggling, the defense didn’t do a whole lot to create breaks.

The D forced three takeaways against Northern Arizona, and it got two more against UCLA – the Cats lost both games. Over the other ten games, you came up with one less takeaway than the Arizona defense did.

No takeaways in the final four games, no fumble recoveries and one interception over the final seven – that has to change.

Arizona Wildcats: Key Player To The 2022 Season

QB Jayden de Laura, Soph.
Go ahead and pick any of the offensive linemen as a key player to the season, but no matter what, the Wildcats have to get steadier – and healthy – quarterback play.

The 2021 offense used three different quarterbacks and wide receiver Jamarye Joiner – he threw ten passes with two scores in some funky sets – with injuries and inconsistency the problem. de Laura – a Washington State transfer – should be just the passer who can finally get the chains moving.

Arizona Wildcats: Key Transfer

DE Hunter Echols, Sr.
Jayden de Laura might be the most important transfer, and UTEP’s Jacob Cowing is the best new guy, but the defense can go up a few notches – and the takeaways should start to come – with a better pass rush.

That’s where the 6-5, 245 transfer from USC should come in. Echols only came up with 1.5 sacks and 50 tackles in his four years with the Trojans, but now he’s getting every opportunity to take over on the end and make the job his.

Arizona Key Game To The 2022 Season

Arizona State, Nov. 25
Just for the pride of the program, beating Arizona State would be a giant deal beyond just taking back the Territorial Cup. Last year’s 38-15 loss was a close shave compared to the 70-7 nightmare to close out 2020, but it was still the fifth straight loss and sixth in seven games.

This time around, there’s a chance it might be for six wins and a bowl game if everything breaks right. No matter what, getting the home victory would be a big step forward.
