How did Haason Reddick do as an edge rusher his rookie season?

He was a more productive pass rusher than Cassius Marsh has been this season in essentially the same role.

After getting relegated to the bench as an inside linebacker, Haason Reddick is going to get some looks as an outside linebacker over the last few weeks of the season. He has failed to develop at inside linebacker, so the team wants to “maximize him as a player and see what we can get there,” according to coach Kliff Kingsbury. “If that’s the answer, we’ll see how that plays out.”

This isn’t the first time he was asked to play as an edge defender in a 3-4 defense.

He played as a defensive end in college at Temple. His speed and athleticism made him a disruptive pass rusher. However, at 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, he doesn’t have the length or the size that most edge defenders have.

That said, even though he was drafted with the intent to make him an inside linebacker, he did play extensively as a 3-4 outside linebacker his rookie season.

After playing the first four games inside, Markus Golden tore his ACL and was lost for the season. Reddick was moved to the edge because they had no depth at the position.

He was a rotational player, the No. 3 player at outside linebacker behind Chandler Jones and Kareem Martin.

In 12 games at outside linebackers as a rotational player, this is the production he had. Based on team stats compiled based on coaches’ film review, he has 16 total tackles (two for loss), 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, five quarterback hits and five other pressures. He did that in 261 snaps at the position. According to Pro Football Focus, he did not miss a tackle in those 12 games.

His role is similar to what Cassius Marsh now does. Marsh is the team’s third outside linebacker. How has he done this season?

In 12 games, he has played 284 snaps — basically the same amount of playing time Reddick had in 12 games in 2017. According to team stats, Marsh has 33 tackles (six for loss), one sack and three quarterback hits.

Comparing the two — Marsh a sixth-year rotational edge defender and Reddick a rookie in 2017 — Reddick’s pass-rushing production was greater. Marsh makes more plays overall, as he has double the tackles in the same amount of time that Reddick did, but Reddick was more disruptive, topping Marsh in sacks, QB hits and forced fumbles.

Because of Reddick’s size, he probably will not ever be able to be more than a rotational 3-4 outside linebacker. Considering he was drafted 13th overall, that is a huge disappointment. But if he can be a productive rotational player off the edge, he will still give the Cardinals value on defense.

Since his value dropped drastically by ending up on the bench, if he can show anything in a new role, the Cardinals could at least get something out of him.

Report: Josh Shaw bet on a Cardinals game

The bet that got him suspended was a three-team parlay that included the game between the Cardinals and Buccaneers.

[jwplayer xr2BPSUF-ThvAeFxT]

The NFL announced on Friday that Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw has been suspended for betting on NFL games. After its investigation, it was determined there was no insider information used and no games were compromised.

However, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, Shaw actually bet on the Cardinals.

It was part of a three-team parlay bet that he lost.

Shaw, who has been on injured reserve since August and has not played since signing with the Cardinals in March, made the parlay bet on Sunday, Nov. 10, at a Caesars sportsbook in Las Vegas, according to the sources. The bet was on the second halves of three Week 10 games, the sources said, and included the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were leading the Cardinals 17-13 at halftime. The Buccaneers were 1-point favorites for the second half. They failed to cover the second-half spread but went on to defeat the Cardinals 30-27. Shaw’s bet lost, according to the sources.

Shaw did not hide the fact he is an NFL player. The sportsbook contacted the NFL shortly after the bet and that triggered the investigation that led to the suspension announced on November 29.

The Cardinals did not know of the investigation prior to the announcement of the suspension.

Shaw is suspended indefinitely, but at least through the 2020 season. He may apply for reinstatement in February 2021.

Cardinals plummet in new power rankings after loss to Rams

The fall five spots and now the Redskins and Dolphins are ahead of them.

For several weeks, despite losing close games, the Arizona Cardinals found themselves climbing slightly in weekly power rankings. After a 34-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 13, that changed.

In USA TODAY’s new weekly power rankings, the Cardinals dropped five spots.

They fell all the way to No. 29 in the league.

Inevitable “Air Raid” offense would eventually kill Air Raided defense, now ranked dead last after surrendering nearly 500 ypg over past five outings.

The Cardinals are now behind teams like the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins, both of whom have three wins on the season.

Who are the teams below the Cardinals? The Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals.

As for the rest of the NFC West, the Los Angeles Rams moved up from 14th to 13th after beating Arizona. The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are No. 3 and No. 4.

The division continues to have two top-five teams, three top-15 teams and then the Cardinals.

Haason Reddick changing positions again, moving to OLB

He has struggled at inside linebacker. The Cardinals are hoping to salvage something out of him as a pass rusher.

[jwplayer JArwclpv-ThvAeFxT]

The Arizona Cardinals are moving linebacker Haason Reddick again. He came out of college at Temple as a defensive end. He was moved to inside linebacker. However, four games into his rookie season, because of an injury to Markus Golden, he moved to 3-4 outside linebacker. In 2018, he went back to an off-the-ball linebacker position, a 4-3 outside linebacker. In 2019, he was moved back to where he was originally drafted to play at 3-4 inside linebacker.

He is on the move again, moving back to the edge at outside linebacker.

Because of his struggles this season, he has found himself on the bench. He went from playing every down to only playing in sub packages and, against the Los Angeles Rams, Joe Walker replaced him completely. Reddick played one defensive snap on Sunday and allowed a touchdown to tight end Tyler Higbee.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Monday there has been discussion about moving him to outside linebacker, taking advantage of more of his abilities to rush the passer.

“He was great in college at that, and that’s an area we’re going to look at and see if he can help us,” he told reporters.

It isn’t a guarantee, though, that he gets playing time at the position in the final weeks.

“We’ll see in practice how that goes,” Kingsbury said on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Monday afternoon. “We want to maximize him as a player and see what we can get there. If that’s the answer, we’ll see how that plays out.”

Reddick was the 13th overall pick in 2017 and just has not worked out yet. This move back to the edge feels like a last-ditch effort to try and find some way to keep him from being a complete bust of a player.

DL Jonathan Bullard to miss a couple of weeks; S Jalen Thompson day-to-day

The Cardinals could be down a couple of defensive starters this week.

[jwplayer JArwclpv-ThvAeFxT]

The Arizona Cardinals had two defensive starters leave the game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams with injuries. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury gave an update on their status on Monday when he addressed the media.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard suffered a hamstring on Sunday and was unable to return. Kingsbury told reporters, “It looks like he’ll be out a couple weeks.”

Bullard had missed the previous game with a foot injury and came back after the bye to play against the Rams. His injury will move Zach Kerr into the starting lineup and leave rookies Miles Brown and Michael Dogbe to come off the bench.

Rookie safety Jalen Thompson also left the game. At the time, it was not announced what injury he had. Kingsbury said Thompson is day-to-day with a head injury. Fellow rookie Deionte Thompson will fill in for him while he is out.

The first official injury of the week will not come out until Wednesday when the Cardinals return to practice.

The strange saga of Arizona Cardinals safety Josh Shaw has taken another interesting turn.

The safety, who was suspended Friday through at least the 2020 season for gambling on NFL games, bet against his own team, according to an ESPN report.

From the ESPN report: "A three-team parlay that included an Arizona Cardinals game led the NFL in part to suspend Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw for violating the league's gambling policy, multiple sources told ESPN. Shaw, who has been on injured reserve in August and has not played since signing with the Cardinals last March, made the parlay bet on Sunday, Nov. 10 at a Caesars sportsbook in Las Vegas, according to the sources. Shaw's bet lost, according to the sources."

Shaw, a fifth-year player out of USC, has been on injured reserve since Aug. 25 because of a shoulder injury. He signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals in March, and will become a free agent following the season.

An NFL investigation uncovered that no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised, according to a statement released by the NFL announcing his suspension, adding there was no evidence "suggesting any awareness by teammates, coaches or other players of his betting activity."

"The continued success of the NFL depends directly on each of us doing everything necessary to safeguard the integrity of the game and the reputations of all who participate in the league," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in the statement. "At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances.

"If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football."

Shaw can petition for reinstatement on or after Feb. 15, 2021.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Shaw went to a casino in Las Vegas this fall and "placed sports bets for the (first) time based on misinterpreted understanding of the Supreme Court ruling."

He flew to New York immediately upon notice of his suspension to meet with the league, and he has cooperated fully. "He considers it an innocent mistake with a severe outcome," Rapoport tweeted.

The suspension is also notable for its rareness.

The last time an NFL player was suspended for betting was Baltimore Colts quarterback Art Schlichter in 1983, according to the Associated Press. He was reinstated the following year.

The most recent disciplinary action was in 1996, when Ravens backup quarterback Jon Stark was placed on leave with pay while the league investigated, according to the Associated Press.

This is also not Shaw's first suspension, although the previous instance came in college.

During his senior season at USC, Shaw was suspended after lying about how he injured his ankles.

Shaw had originally told school he got hurt jumping from a balcony into a pool to save a drowning child.

Later, it was revealed that he had jumped from a balcony to avoid police, who had been called to investigate an argument between Shaw and his girlfriend. He did not face domestic-violence charges.

In 2015, the Bengals selected Shaw in the fourth round with the 120th pick of the draft.

Fitzgerald could have his 50th career 100-yard regular season game with at least 100 receiving yards. If he has at least 36 receiving yards against the Rams, he will pass Andre Johnson for the second-most receiving yards in NFL history at any one stadium. Jerry Rice has the record with 9,403 yards and Candlestick Park. Andre Johnson had 7,776 at NRG Stadium.

Cardinals lose practice squad QB Kyle Sloter to Lions

He is added to the Lions after Jeff Driskel ends up no injured reserve.

[jwplayer xr2BPSUF-ThvAeFxT]

The Arizona Cardinals have kept a third quarterback stashed on the practice squad all season. If they wish to continue to do that, they will have to sign someone else.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, quarterback Kyler Sloter, who has been on the Cardinals’ practice squad all year, has been signed by the Detroit Lions to their active roster. He will back up David Blough, as Jeff Driskel was placed on injured reserve.

Sloter is known in the NFC North, as he spent two years with the Minnesota Vikings.

He was standout performer in the preseason the last three seasons, both with the Vikings and Denver Broncos. Even with his play, he has yet to appear in an NFL game.
