Fresno State, Air Force, and UNLV are the first three teams to become bowl eligible within the Mountain West. The Rebels are bowl eligible for the the first time since 2013 when they finished with a 6-6 regular season record and went to the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Wyoming Cowboys should be the next team to get to bowl eligibility. They are 5-1 but have a tough matchup this week at Boise State. The Cowboys will get there relatively soon, if not this week.

Then there are a slow of three win teams with Boise State, San Jose State, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State, and New Mexico.

According to ESPN’s FPI, here are the chances of these teams getting to the needed six wins.

  • Wyoming 99.8%
  • Boise State at 62.5%
  • Utah State at 54.3%
  • San Jose State at 48.2%
  • Colorado State at 34.2 %
  • New Mexico at 13%
  • San Diego State at 9.7%

History has had seven Mountain West teams go bowling, so by going by that matrix that means the Broncos, Aggies, Spartans and Rams will be in the postseason to make it an extra one and go with eight teams.

The Aztecs 6-0 loss to Nevada gives very, very little confidence they can figure things out and get to a bowl game. The Lobos chances are slim due to the schedule.

They go to Nevada, host UNLV, go to Boise State and then Fresno State, with a finale hosting the Aggies. That is a tough go for a bowl game but getting to four wins would double last year’s win total.

Mountain West Football: Week 8 Winners And Losers

Mountain West Football: Week 8 Winners And Losers

Who came out ahead and who left something to be desired across the Mountain West in Week 8 of the college football season?

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Encouragements and letdowns from the week that was.

Regardless of what you wanted on Saturday, Mountain West football delivered: Shocking upsets. Late game drama. Hotly contested rivalries and memorable highlights. For every joy, though, there’s just as much heartache.

Here are the winners and losers from Week 8.

Winners

1. UNLV’s special teams

A lot had to go right for the Rebels to rally from a 13-3 deficit and beat Colorado State by a 25-23 margin, but Jose Pizano’s 28-yard field goal to win the game as time expired was just one example of UNLV’s specialists leading the way on Saturday.

For starters, that game-winner was one of Pizano’s six field goals, a half-dozen successes that included kicks of 42, 43, and 46 yards. Meanwhile, Marshall Nichols averaged 53 yards per punt, doing his part to make the Rams work for two scoring drives in the first half, and Jacob De Jesus averaged 25.8 yards per kick return and 20 yards on two punt returns (and this doesn’t even include his team-high 120 receiving yards, as well). It hasn’t been talked about enough, but the work that coordinator James Shibest has done this fall has been one of the most significant reasons why the program is now bowling for the first time since 2013. This group has earned the right to be considered one of the best units anywhere in the Mountain West.

2. New Mexico safety Jermarius Lewis

The Lobos put Hawaii in a world of hurt throughout a 42-21 victory, capped by a standout performance from their sophomore safety. The Summit, Mississippi native had seven tackles, two pass breakups, a fourth-down sack to erase a Warriors red zone threat at the end of the third quarter, and two fourth-quarter interceptions, all of which provided a much-needed bright spot for a defense that has often been challenged in 2023.

3. Air Force linebacker Bo Richter

It was a good day in Annapolis for the Falcons, opening their defense of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy with a 17-6 win over Navy, and the senior edge rusher Richter had a particularly productive day with seven total tackles, four tackles for loss, and a sack. It was his fourth game of the season with multiple TFLs and the latest evidence for his case as the Mountain West’s defensive player of the year.

Losers

1. San Diego State offensive coordinator Ryan Lindley

How? The Aztecs have had some offensive clunkers over the years, but getting shut out 6-0 by the previously winless Nevada Wolf Pack may have been a new low.

The obvious failings were plentiful — 3.8 yards per play on offense, 0-for-10 on third downs, a missed 34-yard field goal, two failed fourth downs inside the Nevada 40-yard line, four drops by SDSU pass catchers (according to Pro Football Focus), two fumbles (one of which was lost on their final drive), and a 32% success rate — but the overall sloppiness is something that can’t be easily quantified and it falls on a coaching staff that has struggled to consistently generate points this season. Unless they can snap out of a funk that has seen them score ten or fewer points in four of the last six games, more change may be needed on the Mesa.

2. Utah State quarterback McCae Hillstead

Hillstead’s first start after missing two games with a concussion wasn’t what he or Aggies fans hoped for, as San Jose State held Utah State’s explosive passing game in check throughout a 42-21 defeat. He completed 17-of-29 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, but he also had two interceptions and managed just two plays of 20 or more yards. It didn’t help that, per PFF, he also had to withstand five quarterback hits and 12 pressures, though it was the third straight game in which he threw multiple interceptions.

Hillstead now holds a 5.9% interception rate on 119 attempts, so if he’s to be the long-term solution under center in Logan, he must become more disciplined in taking care of the football.

3. Hawaii

Not much went right for the Warriors in a 41-21 road loss to New Mexico. The defense allowed touchdown drives of at least 55 yards on five of the Lobos’ first six possessions and gave up 6.7 yards per play. And though the offense scored three touchdowns on four trips to the red zone and averaged six yards per play, Hawaii also finished 1-of-10 on third downs and turned the ball over four times.

With a tough November schedule on the horizon, the pressure is on Timmy Chang and his coaching staff to demonstrate their team can play with more consistency in order to steal at least one win down the stretch.

Week 8 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 8

Contact/Follow @J0shFr3d & @MWCwire

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

We went 2-4 in week seven and are 35-27-1 on the year. Another week below .500. At this point, just take the opposite of what I do.

#22 Air Force @ Navy (+10, O/U 33.5)

Air Force has been dominant all season. They got tested against Wyoming, but have taken care of business against everyone else. Navy is in that everyone else category. Usually service academy matchups are close, but the Midshipmen haven’t been at that level the past few years. Take the Falcons to cover.

Pick: Air Force -10

Hawai’i @ New Mexico (+2.5, O/U 60.5)

The Warriors are looking for their first road win of the Timmy Chang era. The run-and-shoot offense is start to gain a foothold. The Lobos looked to be turning a corner on offense, but backslid against San Jose State. Look for that to continue against Hawai’i.

Pick: Hawai’i -2.5

Colorado State @ UNLV (-7.5, O/U 61.5)

It’s a shootout in Vegas this week. The Rebels and Rams both have horrible defenses and it probably won’t change this week unless something drastic happens. Look for this to get close to 70-75 points.

Pick: Over

Utah State @ San Jose State (-4.5, O/U 66.5)

This is the Mountain West trap game of the week. San Jose State broke out of their funk against New Mexico. The Aggies had a chance to beat Fresno State. This has the makings of an offensive slugfest. I still don’t trust the Spartans and the Aggies have shown something these past couple of weeks.

Pick: Utah State +4

Nevada @ San Diego state (-11.5, O/U 47.5)

Look Nevada is bad and has a chance to go winless this year. The Aztecs aren’t that good of a team either, but they’ve managed to make enough plays to get three wins this year. This could be another shootout, but I doubt it with how bad these offenses are. Take the under.

Pick: Under

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTIONS: Air Force has an 80.67% chance to win (26.18-13.2)

The biggest game of the Air Force season is being played in Annapolis this Saturday. Coincidentally, it’s also the biggest game of the year for Navy as well. Yes, by Sunday, the biggest game of the year for one of these two teams will have changed and involve that Military Academy in New York, but that game has little relevance until Air Force plays Navy.

This is where the battle for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy begins!

Navy has looked underwhelming more times than not, with an up and down 3-3 start to the year. By some though, three wins at this point in the season may be a tic above expectation. Despite a revolving door of quarterbacks, and generally inconsistent output from their offense, the Mids are still in bowl contention, as well as vying for the all important CiC Trophy.

Navy will likely be relying on a very experienced Senior Tai Lavatai at quarterback on Saturday. He’s been the on and off again starter for what seems the last three seasons. But this is the same guy that last beat Army for Navy, so he’s no stranger to big games. Expect to see Braxton Woodson, the Freshman direct enrollee to see some playing time as well.

The quarterback situation at Air Force got very interesting late in their thrilling win over Wyoming last week. Jensen Jones entered the game when Zac Larrier went down with a knee injury. The offense stumbled at first with the change under center fumbling twice, but settled after under Jones control, masterfully executing an option pitch to the boundary that John Lee Eldridge II took to the house from 70 yards out. Jones also put the game on ice with their last possession, getting tough yards inside converting a first down to put the game on ice.

As if this game needed any additional juice, Navy is going to be honoring All-Time great Roger Staubach with a ceremony at the game. If the Falcons want Staubach’s jersey number adorning the field to be the only cause for celebration for the Mids, they had better come prepared for four quarters of football. Otherwise, Air Force’s stint being ranked, along with their possession of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy may be abbreviated.

HERE’S HOW AIR FORCE CAN SINK THE MIDS

There is likely to be precipitation at some point during Saturday’s game. Ball security is always critical when you run some version of a time consuming option offense. I know many at Navy contend they have changed from the conventional triple option offense, but ultimately both of these teams have very similar philosophies. They run a lot, and they run very well.

Which brings up the biggest threat that the Falcons need to take inventory of, Alec Tecza. The Navy fullback is in a similar mold to Brad Roberts, minus a career suggesting he’s an all-time great at the program. Yet. Tecza is just a sophomore and has been a game changer with the ball in his hands.

Averaging over 230 yards per game on the ground, 5th best nationally, Navy has a lot of talent in their backfield. The fullbacks are an absolute strength with Daba Fofana and Tecza. The Air Force front seven have got to limit what the Mids backs are able to do on early downs especially.

Another area of the game to pay close attention to is turnovers. In games like this, the impact of a turnover seems to be magnified. Despite some very lopsided losses, Navy is one of the best at creating turnovers, forcing 12 of them. That’s twice as many as Air Force on the season. Neither team has thrown an interception this year, it will be interesting to see how many times the Falcons put the ball in the air with Jones getting his first start. The Falcons need a clean game in Annapolis.

I suspect the biggest deciding factor in this game is going to come through sustainability. The ability to keep drives alive, even if to flip field position, and conversely the ability to get off of the field. Both of these teams feature strong third down defenses. But where Air Force really stands out among the competition is in their ability to convert third downs. They are the best in the country, converting almost 60% of their third downs.

That defensive unit of Brian Knorr’s, not Newberry, is one of the best in the country. They aren’t going to make it easy for Navy to find daylight, a rhythm, conversions or points.

Even if the Navy run defense which allows double (148 yards per game) what the Falcons surrender on the ground, I don’t see it being sustainable. Eventually the dam is going to break from fatigue, as Air Force has shown a much better ability to maintain drives offensively and end them defensively. A slow suffocation.

I realize much of this relies on a quarterback making their first start on a critical stage. But all those diesels in front of Jensen Jones have experience to spare, and the supporting cast in the backfield is as dynamic and deep as any. Ask Wyoming if Jensen Jones can make a play to put you out.

And even if the game does come down to special teams, thankfully for Air Force, they have a dynamic kicker in Mathew Dapore who is perfect on the year.

Air Force Sings Second.

[mm-video typ21e=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Air Force Falcons are undefeated, ranked in the top 25 polls, and on track to a special season that could include its first-ever Mountain West title and New Year’s Six bowl appearance.

The Falcons take on rival Navy this weekend but head coach Troy Calhoun confirmed that starting quarterback Zac Larrier is going to miss the game.

Calhoun said that his quarterback will “likely be out for a while” after injuring a knee in last week’s 34-27 victory against Wyoming, and doesn’t “know how long that’s going to be.”

So, it will be more than just the Midshipmen game but losing Larrier might be a big deal. He is a speedster who is not only a really quarterback but is a track star by being the Mountain West champion in the 200 meters.

Jensen Jones came in relief during the Wyoming game when Larrier got hurt. That performance by the senior didn’t go well as he fumbled on the first two attempts he had the ball. Those turnovers nearly cost the Falcons the game against Wyoming as the Cowboys stored a touchdown on the first one, but then missed a 52-yard attempt.

After the game, Calhoun downplayed the situation with Jensen coming in during a high-stress situation.

“I don’t think any of us are perfect in what we do,” Calhoun said of Jones’ fumbles. “I make all kinds of mistakes. He’ll get better. I think more than anything else, no matter what somebody does, [it’s about] hanging in there with them. They’ve shown the capability and aptitude and there’s plenty there, [so] let’s keep plugging away.”

Larrier has been a key cog for the Air Force offense by rushing for 473 yards and four touchdowns. Those rushing numbers are good to be fourth in the conference and just 24 yards behind teammate Emmanuel Michel.

Larrier also is doing well at throwing the ball by averaging 16.7 yards per attempt, and per catch it comes out to be 23.4 yards. That part of the offense is what makes the Falcons offense even more potent.

While quarterback play isn’t necessarily throwing the ball for this offense, but controlling the ball and knowing when to pitch it or keep it and especially not fumbling the ball.

Jensen will have a week of practice and start the game against Navy and not coming in cold off the bench. With that prep time and knowing he is the guy should allow for a smoother start this weekend.

Unless something wild happens, Air Force is in the frontrunner seat to earn a New Year’s Six bid. They are ahead of Tulane in the rankings and will very likely remain there with zero losses. The official College Football Playoff rankings are still a few weeks off to know for sure.

The Falcons do take on rival Navy this weekend and will do so without starting quarterback Zac Larrier for this week and maybe more. That is the one big thing in the way of them staying undefeated.

For now, Air Force is pegged to the Fiesta Bowl and will be a pain in the butt matchup for some team like Oregon, Texas or Penn State.
