Updated list of this weekend’s cancelled/postponed college football games

The full list of the now 14 games that have been canceled or postponed in college football this weekend.

It seems like each time you refresh your Twitter feed this week there is more bad news for college football as yet another game is being cancelled or postponed.

That was the case for me as I just hit refresh as I sat down after lunch and the news of Utah and UCLA getting called-off showed up.

Add it to the ever-growing list as COVID-19 has hit college football hard this week and teams and conferences understandably proceed with the season under plenty of caution.

Here is a list of all the college football games that have been either cancelled or postponed for this weekend:

No. 1 Alabama at LSU
No. 3 Ohio State at Maryland
No. 5 Texas A&M at Tennessee
No. 12 Georgia at Missouri
No. 15 Coastal Carolina at Troy
No. 24 Auburn at Mississippi State
North Texas at UAB
Rice at Louisiana Tech
Memphis at Navy
Pittsburgh at Georgia Tech
Air Force at Wyoming
California at Arizona State
UL Monroe at Arkansas State
Utah at UCLA

14 games in total are off for this weekend as college football continues to play through the COVID-19 pandemic.

No. 2 Notre Dame-Boston College: FIW Staff Predictions

How high of alert should the college football world be on when Notre Dame travels to Boston College? The FIW staff predictions are in

The ultimate letdown game?

The Man in the Red Bandanna Game for Boston College.

And November 20, 1993.

It’s Notre Dame and Boston College this Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts as the Irish look to move to 8-0 on the year and avoid a letdown after their incredible upset victory over previously No. 1 Clemson last week.

Should the Irish be on upset alert or will the train keep rolling right on through this match-up?  Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees happening on Saturday – and a kind reminder you can follow all four of our guys on Twitter at:

ACC the latest victim of postponement due to COVID-19

The SEC has been hit very hard by cancellations of this weekend’s college football games but Thursday saw the ACC join that unfortunate list.

The list of games that have been cancelled or postponed for this weekend’s college football schedule is substantial.

No. 1 Alabama’s trip to LSU was postponed earlier this week as was No. 3 Ohio State’s game at Maryland and No. 5 Texas A&M traveling to Tennessee.

There were plenty of others as well including No. 12 Georgia no longer heading to Missouri this weekend or No. 24 Auburn taking on Mississippi State.

Four other games in Group of Five conferences had also been canceled or postponed but on Thursday the ACC joined the unfortunate club as Pittsburgh’s game at Georgia Tech has been postponed until December 12.

Previously scheduled as the weekend to possibly hold the ACC Championship Game, December 12 will now see three regular season conference games:

No. 2 Notre Dame at Wake Forest
Virginia at Virginia Tech
Pittsburgh at Georgia Tech

The ACC Championship Game has officially been scheduled for December 19 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Breaking: Ivy League cancels winter sports

The Ivy League has become the first conference to cancel all sports for the 2020-21 winter season, including basketball.

[jwplayer xQlSrZWT]

In the same week we saw some basketball programs announce their entire season schedules, the Ivy League has announced their cancellations of the entire 2020-21 winter sports schedule.

Ivy League presidents voted to make that decision on Thursday afternoon and Matt Norlander of CBS Sports was the first to report it.

From the Matt Norlander/CBS Sports report:

This is not a shocking vote — far from it. Multiple Ivy League sources, dating back to early September, expressed pessimism about the notion that league presidents would allow for winter sports/a basketball season. Some programs have yet to even hold indoor workouts to this point. Added one source, “We don’t need money to play. In the Ivy League, it’s 100% a health and safety issue.”

As you may recall the Ivy League was the first conference to cancel their 2020 football season while the likes of the Big Ten and Pac-12 and MAC all followed suit, although all three ultimately reversed course and decided to play.

It remains to be seen if the Ivy League will remain on an island with cancelling fall sports or if other conferences will follow their lead before long.

College basketball is set to get underway in just two weeks.

Stay tuned and buckle up.

Notre Dame football: kickoff time set for North Carolina game

It may be Notre Dame’s toughest remaining game this regular season and it takes place on a strange day for the Irish. Details here…

Notre Dame doesn’t play football on weekdays very often, most recently doing so in the regular season on Labor Day 2019 when they opened the season with a 35-17 win at Louisville.

Previous to that you have to go all the way back to 1996 when the Irish opened the season with an impressive 14-7 victory on a Thursday night at Vanderbilt.

Notre Dame will be playing at North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 27 and we now know what time we’ll be glued to our television sets as kickoff was officially announced for 3:30 p.m. ET that day.

On paper this game against North Carolina and Mack Brown appears to be Notre Dame’s tallest remaining hurdle ahead of the potential ACC Championship Game.

The game will be broadcast on ABC and will be Notre Dame’s eighth trip all-time to Chapel Hill.  The Irish are 5-2 in those match-ups and 18-2 all-time against the Tar Heels.

Virginia (2-4) vs Louisville (2-5) Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals might be having a rough season, but the offense still works, and the team has been battling hard through a rough slate. Yeah, it’s 2-5, but it played three straight road games and had to deal with two tough Miami and Virginia Tech teams at home.

The secondary hasn’t been all that bad. It’s partly because everyone runs all over the Cardinal defensive front, but it should be able to handle the Virginia passing game.

The Cavaliers are last in the ACC in downfield passing, and on the flip side, their defense is last in pass defense. For all of the problems, the Cardinals are able to throw with three 300-yard games, and this should be the fourth as long as Malik Cunningham gets hot early.

However …

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why Virginia Will Win

Louisville has a massive turnover problem. It has yet to win the turnover battle and is a -11 overall. Just when things started to get better after giving it up 11 times in the first four games, three picks against Virginia Tech were a killer.

No, Virginia doesn’t throw the ball down the field at all – averaging just 10.4 yards per completion – but it can get the midrange attack working. It’s nothing flashy, but it’s enough to control the clock for almost 33 minutes a game helped by a nice season by the offensive front.

Louisville doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to be a big problem.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be all about the turnover battle. Louisville might be awful when it comes to giveaways, but Virginia isn’t all that much better.

This is one of the road games the Cardinals have to win, but every time it looks like it’s about to be strong, something goes wrong.

Both teams are struggling, but they’re even enough to make this a fun, competitive game. Virginia will have the ball more, it’ll be better on third downs, and it’ll be a +1 in turnover margin. That will be just enough to squeak by.

Notre Dame (7-0) vs Boston College (5-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Notre Dame Will Win

This is really that good a Notre Dame team.

It might not be flashy, and it might not have a whole slew of recognizable names, but as it showed against Clemson, the lines are terrific, the passing game works, the running game has pop, and the team took shot after shot and came out with the win.

It starts with something simple – owning third downs.

The offense leads the ACC in third down conversions, the defense leads the ACC in third down stops, and the methodical production keeps on coming – the team leads the ACC in time of possession.

There aren’t a lot of penalties, turnovers aren’t a problem, and the run defense will hold BC to fewer than 75 yards. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Boston College Will Win

The Boston College ground game is getting better, but that’s because it played Georgia Tech and Syracuse in the last three games. No, the offense doesn’t need to grind it out – and it won’t – but it’s going to start slinging and keep throwing.

Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec has been terrific for the Eagles, hitting 200 yards or more in every game but the win over Georgia Tech, and that’s because the team ran the ball.

Clemson didn’t run a lick on the Irish – Travis Etienne and company were held to 34 net yards – and it came within a defensive stop of pulling off the win because DJ Uiagalelei threw for 439 yards in his second start.

Jurkovec isn’t as talented as Uiagalelei, but he’s got the poise, the coaching, and the offense to keep on pushing the relatively untested Irish secondary.

And then there’s history. For people of certain ages …

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

In 2002, Notre Dame was 8-0 and coming off a huge road win at Florida State. The next week … Boston College 14, Notre Dame 7.

In 1993, Notre Dame was 10-0 and on the way to the national championship after stopping Florida State and Charlie Ward in a legendary game in South Bend. The next week … Boston College 41, Notre Dame 39.

This Boston College program has broken hearts before, and …

A whole lot of players on the 2020 Fighting Irish weren’t alive in 2002, and all of them were years away from being on this planet when Pete Mitchell caught a gajillion passes on the way to the upset in ’93.

This is a good enough Eagle team to keep it close and throw a scare into the Irish – who now have a College Football Playoff spot there for the taking if they can keep on winning – but Notre Dame’s lines will take over as the game goes on.

Pitt (4-4) vs Georgia Tech (2-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Pitt Will Win

The defensive line is crushing and killing everything in its path.

Florida State ran for 146 yards last week against the Panthers, and that was a season-most allowed by the D that also generated 14 tackles for loss.

Pitt leads the nation in tackles for loss and and is third in sacks per game, it’s second in college football against the run, and now it gets a Georgia Tech offense that has to run well to win.

The Yellow Jackets have lost three straight as the ground game has gotten progressively less productive in each of the last five game games.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Yellow Jacket defense needs to force mistakes, and it has to capitalize on them all. It’s not a coincidence that the team is 2-0 when it forces more than two turnovers, and is 0-5 when it forces fewer.

Pitt isn’t that bad at giving the ball away, but it gave it up three times a few weeks ago in the loss to Notre Dame.

There’s no Panther running game to worry about, there aren’t enough third down conversions on a regular basis, and overall, there are way, way, way too many penalties. Georgia Tech has a problem with flags, but Pitt really has an issue, getting nailed with an ACC-high 75.5 yards per game.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Kenny Pickett made a difference. The Panther quarterback missed two games and was questionable for the Florida State game, and then he hit 78% of his passes for 210 yards.

He was good, the defensive line was better, and it’s all going to keep going against a Georgia Tech team that’s improving, but doesn’t have enough production on the offensive line to hold on against the devastating Panther pass rush.
