Boston College uniforms for Notre Dame game an honor to American hero

When Boston College welcomes Notre Dame to town on Saturday, the Eagles will be wearing very special uniforms in honor of an American hero.

I’ll start by saying I’m kind of boring and old school in the sense that alternate uniforms don’t usually do very much for me.

Notre Dame wearing green on Saturday when they upset No. 1 Clemson would have made the game no more special to me than it was with them wearing blue and gold.

Maybe it’s the years of disappointment when the green was worn in huge games that made me this way, but whatever the case, I’m generally not much for them.

I will say Boston College’s alternate uniforms this weekend are about as good as it gets, however.

And it’s not simply based off their look, but the story behind them.

Saturday will be a “Red Bandanna Game” for Boston College, in honor of alumni Welles Crowther.

If you’ve never heard the story of the “Man in the Red Bandanna” during the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, then it’s worth a few minutes of your time to learn more.

In short, the 24 year old former Boston College lacrosse player was working in the WTC when the attacks took place.  A volunteer firefighter when he was just 16 years old, Crowther sprung to action immediately by helping guide many to stairways and exits, saving their lives before the tower fell.

Because of the smoke he put a red bandanna over his mouth and nose to protect from the smoke.  It happened that he always kept the red bandanna with him and survivors who he helped simply referred to him as the “Man in the Red Bandanna”.

At just 24 years old his spent the final minutes of his life helping save as many others as possible instead of running for the exit and saving himself.

If you’re interested, I try and watch the following piece on Crowther each September 11 just for some life perspective.

If there were more people in the world like Welles Crowther today, it’d undoubtedly be a much better place to live.

Watch: Relive Notre Dame’s epic win over Clemson, behind the scenes

Watch as Notre Dame’s social media account bring you inside the locker room of Notre Dame epic win over No. 1 Clemson.

If there is a better social media team in the nation’s than Notre Dame’s, I have yet to see it. Once again, they put on a fantastic view of the Irish’s double-overtime win against Clemson. Take a look for yourself, this is seven minutes of Irish heaven.

Urban Meyer, Big Noon analysts high on Notre Dame’s chances for CFP berth

Fox’s Big Noon analysts (Urban Meyer, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn and Rob Stone) have Notre Dame in the College Football Playoffs.

It seems like plenty of analysts are jumping on Notre Dame’s bandwagon after their thrilling double-overtime win over Clemson, 47-40, this past Saturday evening. In a tweet posted this afternoon, each one of Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff analysts predicted the Irish will make the College Football Playoffs.

Three of them, former USC quarterback Matt Leinart, former Irish quarterback Brady Quinn, and host Rob Stone have Notre Dame as a two-seed. That’s where I have them as well in my projected CFP standings. Former Notre Dame assistant and hall of fame coach Urban Meyer along with former USC running back Reggie Bush have the Irish as a three-seed.

It really doesn’t matter if the Irish finish as one of the middle two seeds, they face off against each other anyways. In this scenario, they would face off against Ohio State, in what would amount to a revenge game of sorts for the Irish.

The Irish havent’ beaten Ohio State since 1936, the Buckeyes having beaten the Irish in each of their last 4 matchups since 1995. Their most recent matchup was in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl, where Ohio State defeated the Irish, 44-28.

The win over Clemson has Notre Dame squarely in the mix for a playoff berth, it would be their first since 2018, when they lost to Clemson. The Irish have certainly gotten the Tigers off their backs and will look to get the Buckeyes off their backs if they end up squaring off in a semifinal matchup.

Notre Dame preps for decades long Boston College issue

Notre Dame has seen a pair of unbeaten seasons end against Boston College, one coming a week after knocking off No. 1.

It’s pretty simple.

Simply say the name “Boston College” to any Notre Dame fan and nightmares are immediately brought back.

It’s as easy as 1993, a week after knocking off No. 1 Florida State in the “Game of the Century”, Notre Dame laid the golden egg of all eggs and lost at home to Boston College which in turn kept the Irish from a national championship.

Nine years later it was Notre Dame in their first year under Tyrone Willingham shocking the nation and jumping out to an 8-0 record after upsetting Florida State in Tallahassee.

One week later, in the most hideous green jerseys the world has ever seen, quarterback Carlyle Holiday got injured and No. 4. Notre Dame fell to Boston College 14-7 and were never able to recover under Willingham’s tenure as they’d go just 13-15 the remainder of his watch starting with that game.

No. 2 Notre Dame hits the road this week to again take on Boston College one week after a massive win.

A win certainly wouldn’t get the talk of Boston College ruining Notre Dame’s title hopes forever, at least unless the second ranked Irish were able to put and end to their 32 year title drought this January.

But a win over Boston College even in 2012 didn’t make those awful memories go away, even when Notre Dame wound up in the national championship game.

This Boston College team is significantly improved compared to the 2019 Eagles that Notre Dame beat up 40-7 late last season.

They may be 5-3 but are dangerous under former Notre Dame backup quarterback Phil Jurkovec.

The Eagles had a 28-10 lead at Clemson just a week ago before giving it up and falling 34-28.

They also nearly knocked off a then-unbeaten North Carolina team before falling late, but in their only other defeat they were blasted by Virginia Tech, 40-14.

They also had to sneak out with a victory over traditional powerhouse Texas State, 24-21 and also barely got by a bad Syracuse team last week with a 16-13 win.

It’s hardly a great team Notre Dame faces in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts but it’s certainly one that has made life hard on some good teams to date.

There will be plenty of story lines and memories of both 1993 and 2002 when Notre Dame hits the road this weekend but if talent has anything to do with it, it should be a game the Irish roll to 8-0 in before their bye week.

Notre Dame’s Kelly gets national recognition for defeating Clemson

Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s head coach, is named the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Week after upsetting No. 1 Clemson.

After ending Clemson’s “rule” over the ACC, plenty of Notre Dame players got recognition. Actually, three of the did which you can see here, but it was Brian Kelly’s turn to reap the benefits of defeating the former No. 1 team in the nation.

A perfect 7-0 start the the season, the longest winning streak in college football, it’s fitting that Kelly is finally getting some people to turn their heads. The Bobby Dodd Trophy is well aware of the Irish’s leader’s excellence, as Kelly won the award in 2018.

If the Irish continue their solid play for the rest of the regular season, Kelly should be in line for plenty of year-end national awards as well.

Kickoff time set for Notre Dame vs. Boston College

Kickoff time has been announced for Notre Dame’s trip to Boston College this weekend as the Irish look to avoid an upset at the hands of BC.

This Saturday’s Notre Dame game at Boston College has an official kickoff time set after the Irish upset of Clemson last week.

Notre Dame fans will have to keep the majority of their afternoons free as the ball will be teed up at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be shown nationwide on ABC.

Notre Dame moved to 7-0 on their season with the upset victory of Clemson and is the only remaining unbeaten team in the ACC.

Boston College is 5-3 on the year after sneaking by Syracuse with a 16-13 victory on Saturday.

As you’re probably aware, last time Notre Dame knocked off No. 1 all the way back in 1993, they lost to Boston College a week later which ruined their national championship dreams.

Trevor Lawrence comments on Notre Dame’s upset of Clemson

Trevor Lawrence met the media on Monday and offered his thoughts on not being able to play at Notre Dame this past weekend.

Clemson star quarterback and the runaway favorite to be the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Trevor Lawrence wasn’t able to play because of testing positive for COVID-19 late the week previous.

Would Lawrence have made the difference between Clemson winning and losing?

We could have that debate for a long time and not come to any certain conclusion but as well as DJ Uiagaleilei played, there were some plays and first downs left on the field because of misfires.  That said, Uiagaleilei played at an absurd level and showed exactly why he was regarded as one of the very top recruits in the entire nation last year.

Back to Lawrence though, the Clemson quarterback met the media via a video call on Monday and shared his thoughts on Saturday’s upset victory by Notre Dame and a bit on the time frame of when he knew he wouldn’t be playing in South Bend.

Lawrence on when he knew he wasn’t playing:

“I probably knew Saturday of the Boston College game,” Lawrence said. “I talked to coach Swinney and Danny Poole, our trainer. I asked if there was anything I could do to help on my end. Danny said there’s really no way for me to be in position where I could play. Coach Swinney, we talked about it. He said after the game he was probably going to say something to get that out of that way and let everybody know I wouldn’t be able to play.

Lawrence on not getting to play at Notre Dame Stadium:

“Obviously hate that I wasn’t able to play. Really a once-in-a-lifetime experience to get to play there. Super cool place. Just a cool thing to be a part of. Definitely wish I could have played, would have meant a lot to me. Can’t do anything about it, but just glad I was able to be there for my team.

Lawrence on if his absence was the difference between winning and losing:

“Who knows? Football is such an interesting game,” Lawrence said. “D.J. made a ton of plays that were great. Obviously, I would have loved to have been in there. D.J. was prepared and did everything he could. I would have loved to be able to play, for sure.”

Lawrence appears to be back on track to return for 7-1 Clemson next weekend as the Tigers travel to Florida State on November 21 after getting an off week this week.

Notre Dame’s five biggest plays from Clemson upset

Lord knows there were a ton of huge plays made by Notre Dame as they upset Clemson on Saturday but here were the five biggest for the Irish.

What a 24 hours it’s been living in the moment of Notre Dame knocking off the No. 1 Clemson Tigers and moving up to the second spot in the nation’s top 25 polls.A ton went right for the Irish on Saturday night in their win and like happens against great teams, a ton went a bit wrong as well. What were the five biggest plays that shifted the showdown into Notre Dame’s favor though?

Let’s go through all of them in chronological order as it started early for Notre Dame.

NBC draws massive number for Notre Dame-Clemson

NBC was nearly as big of winner as Notre Dame on Saturday with the massive number the Irish vs. Clemson drew.

Games with the hype of Notre Dame and Clemson on Saturday night often times don’t live up to the billing, but this one had it all.

A quick start by the underdog, highlight catches, controversial calls, back and forth action a late comeback and a pair of overtimes to boot.

All of that coupled with the most anticipated Saturday Night Live of the year having to be pushed back made NBC a huge winner in the ratings game Saturday night as the game averaged a total audience delivery of 9.44 million viewers according to NBC, making it the most viewed Notre Dame game on NBC since the famed “Bush Push” contest in 2005.

Dave Chappelle hosting Saturday Night Live to conclude election week certainly didn’t hurt matters either as some looking for that as the game went to a second overtime helped the audience peak at 14.2 million viewers from 11:30-11:45 p.m. ET.

Notre Dame’s home season, the 30th of which has been broadcast on NBC, concludes on December 5 when the Irish host Syracuse at 2:30 p.m. ET.
