Virginia vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

The Louisville pass defense isn’t a total disaster, but it’s the worst in the ACC.

To be fair, playing Ole Miss, UCF, and Wake Forest had something to do with that, but Florida State was able to throw for 248 yards, too.

Welcome to Virginia.

This isn’t the slow-and-stodgy Cavalier team we’re all used to. QB Brennan Armstrong and the passing game are bombing away with close to 2,000 yards in the first five games and now it’s time to crank up.

Louisville isn’t doing enough against the run, either – the overall D is the worst in the ACC – and the Cavs proved in the win over Miami that it could be a bit balanced, too.

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Louisville Will Win

Virginia doesn’t have a massive turnover problem, but it has a turnover margin issue.

The defense hasn’t come up with any takeaways in the last two games and has just three on the year. Again, the turnovers aren’t a massive issue, but the Cavaliers have yet to win the turnover battle and are -4 on the year.

For all of the issues on defense, Louisville has been able to keep up the pace after the loss to Ole Miss. The offense is terrific at controlling the tempo, Virginia’s D is lousy on third downs, and keeping the ball for at least 35 minutes is possible.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Louisville get that one key win to jumpstart the season?

It might be 3-2, but lose this, and it might be tough to get three more wins to go bowling without an upset or three.

For all of the high-octane fun, Virginia has problems putting games away. It couldn’t get past North Carolina and Wake Forest, and it needed a missed field goal against a D’Eriq King-less Miami to get by.

Louisville is a wee bit more effective in a blast of an offensive showdown.

Why Virginia Will Win

Florida State plays earlier in the day While the regular season ACC Championship means little without good runs in the tournaments, and the Noles have already locked in all the byes in the conference fun, technically, if FSU loses to Notre Dame then Virginia could finished tied up top of the ACC record-wise.

Okay, so it’s really FSU’s conference after beating the lone head-to-head battle with the Cavaliers, but …

Virginia can still print a t-shirt if it wishes – if all goes perfectly.

The team got back on track after losing three straight with a win over Miami, and now the defense has to keep it all going against a relatively hot Louisville squad.

As good as the Cardinals are, and as much as they might need this win, they don’t shoot enough from three and don’t make enough to keep up if Virginia can clamp down in the interior.

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals are shooting well lately in the run of three wins in four games, they’ve gone 9-1 at at KFC Yum! – only losing to Florida State – and no one in the ACC is better at stopping the three.

Virginia is hardly all about sooting from the outside, but it’s eighth in the nation and second in the ACC – behind, wait for it … Florida State – at making the three. The Cardinals have held four of the last five teams on the slate to under 40% from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

After the way Virginia has been playing over the last few weeks, it’s not going to take anything easy. It’s going to want to pull off this win, but at home and in need of a statement win, the Cardinals will ramp up the D enough to pull this off.

Don’t expect any sort of a shootout, but it’ll be entertainingly tight down to the end. Louisville’s free throw issues will make this more of a nail-biter than it needs to be.

Virginia (2-4) vs Louisville (2-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals might be having a rough season, but the offense still works, and the team has been battling hard through a rough slate. Yeah, it’s 2-5, but it played three straight road games and had to deal with two tough Miami and Virginia Tech teams at home.

The secondary hasn’t been all that bad. It’s partly because everyone runs all over the Cardinal defensive front, but it should be able to handle the Virginia passing game.

The Cavaliers are last in the ACC in downfield passing, and on the flip side, their defense is last in pass defense. For all of the problems, the Cardinals are able to throw with three 300-yard games, and this should be the fourth as long as Malik Cunningham gets hot early.

However …

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why Virginia Will Win

Louisville has a massive turnover problem. It has yet to win the turnover battle and is a -11 overall. Just when things started to get better after giving it up 11 times in the first four games, three picks against Virginia Tech were a killer.

No, Virginia doesn’t throw the ball down the field at all – averaging just 10.4 yards per completion – but it can get the midrange attack working. It’s nothing flashy, but it’s enough to control the clock for almost 33 minutes a game helped by a nice season by the offensive front.

Louisville doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to be a big problem.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be all about the turnover battle. Louisville might be awful when it comes to giveaways, but Virginia isn’t all that much better.

This is one of the road games the Cardinals have to win, but every time it looks like it’s about to be strong, something goes wrong.

Both teams are struggling, but they’re even enough to make this a fun, competitive game. Virginia will have the ball more, it’ll be better on third downs, and it’ll be a +1 in turnover margin. That will be just enough to squeak by.
