Tyson Walker awaiting pro destination as season looms

Tyson Walker’s pro future in limbo as 2024-25 season looms

Former Michigan State basketball guard Tyson Walker went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft before playing NBA Summer League with the Phoenix Suns. As of now, Walker does not have a home for pro basketball in 2024-25, but that should change in the coming weeks.

247Sports reporter Stephen Brooks went on a deep dive about the looming decision for Walker and whether or not the guard will be staying stateside or going abroad:

Colts’ training camp: Where does FS battle stand after 5 practices?

It’s only been five training camp practices, but there remain more questions than answers for the Colts at free safety.

The Colts have five training camp practices under their belt, and the competition at free safety still has way more questions than answers.

During OTAs and minicamp, it was Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas both working with the first team defense. But during training camp, in a bit of a surprise, after the Colts moved Ronnie Harrison from safety to linebacker last season, he was thrown into the mix at free safety.

Making that move even more head-scratching is that in recent years, even when playing the safety position, Harrison has been a strong safety, not a free safety.

“Well, for us, when Ronnie gets in there,” said Gus Bradley on Saturday, “it seems like something good happens, whether he’s playing linebacker, he’s playing strong safety, and so we thought, you know what, we’ve got this competition going on back there.

“I mean, something good does happen, let’s take a look at it. Does he have the skill set needed to play that and give him an opportunity to compete with the rest of them.”

After a handful of practices, Stephen Holder, who covers the Colts for ESPN, would say after Wednesday’s practice that the “situation at free safety right now is curious, at best.”

James Boyd, who covers the Colts for The Athletic, would say that free safety is his “most concerning thing” up to this point in training camp.

Who is going to win the starting job still remains unclear–although there is certainly still time for that to be worked out.

However, there does seem to be a pecking order that is beginning to take place with Boyd also adding that Cross and Harrison are rotating reps with the starters while Thomas appears to be the third option.

“It’s been good,” said Bradley after Wednesday’s practice about the free safety battle. “I think that was one of the positions we looked at yesterday and started to see some flashes where that execution part is there.

“So now, when you see them play with good execution, you can kind of judge their speed then. They’re not thinking as much. We still got some work to do there as far as our evaluation goes, but it’s going in the right direction.”

Inconsistent play at the safety position was a contributing factor to the number of big plays surrendered in the passing game last season. Looking ahead to the Colts’ first few games of the season, they begin the year facing CJ Stroud and Jordan Love.

When speaking with reporters before camp began, GM Chris Ballard didn’t rule out adding to the position group, but he said that he first wants to see how the competition at safety unfolds first, which could even extend into the season.

“We like our young players,” said Ballard. “I’m not saying we won’t do something. We definitely could. But I want to see these young guys get after it and compete.”

Kirk Cousins recovery appears to be going good during Falcons training camp

Kirk Cousins is moving well to start the Falcons training camp

The Atlanta Falcons concluded day six of their training camp as they gear up for the 2024-25 NFL season. One storyline of note is the recovery of former Michigan State QB Kirk Cousins, who is coming off of a torn Achilles injury.

During day six, according to Falcons ESPN beat reporter Marc Raimondi, Cousins took off and scrambled, using his legs, the same legs that the QB says are feeling good as he prepares for the season.

“QB Kirk Cousins took off and ran during a two-minute drill, putting to the test that surgically repaired right Achilles. Cousins got a 6-yard gain on the play with coach Raheem Morris shouting ‘Blow the whistle!’,” Raimondi’s notes on X said. “Cousins said his run probably gave Morris ‘a little bit of a heart attack.’ But Cousins said his leg feels good and his plan of doing the rest of his rehab by simply playing football has been a success thus far.”

Spartan and Falcons fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery and a solid 2024-25 season from Cousins.

Packers tease all-white uniform and helmet combo for 2024 season

Expect to see the Green Bay Packers wearing an all-white uniform and helmet combination at some point during the 2024 season.

Expect to see the Green Bay Packers wearing an all-white uniform and helmet combination at some point during the 2024 season.

The team teased the new look in a social media post on Wednesday night, suggesting a full reveal is coming in the near future.

While the full helmet wasn’t show, the post did feature Jordan Love wearing the white-on-white uniform and pant combination that the team has worn in past years. Only a small part of the new white helmet — with a white facemask — is visible.

Here’s the post:

It’s unclear if the Packers will be willing to wear the white-on-white-on-white set at home at Lambeau Field, or if it will be an away combo. The team has wore the white uniform and pant combo both at home and on the road in past years.

Here was our recent mock-up of the all-white uniform and helmet featuring Love and Bo Melton, but note ours has a green facemask:

It’s unknown if the helmet will have any other accent colors. Our mock up has the traditional “G” logo, with a middle gold stripe sandwiched by green stripes. It’s possible the helmet will drop the middle gold stripe and only have green accents.

Washington’s NIL collective Montlake Futures announces event with Bill Belichick

Washington’s NIL collective Montlake Futures announced plans to host an exclusive dinner with Bill Belichick.

Washington fans should get used to seeing Bill Belichick in Huskies gear more often.

After the former New England Patriots coach popped up at spring practice on Montlake and was seen in Huskies gear several times during public appearances, many Washington fans have begun to ask just how involved Belichick plans to be in the program that hired his son, Steve, as defensive coordinator this offseason.

On Wednesday, Montlake Futures answered: very involved. At least for one more night.

Washington’s NIL collective announced plans for an exclusive dinner with the legendary eight-time Super Bowl champion, promoting the event with the description “Leadership, the state of football, story telling, pictures, and autographs throughout the event.”

Proceeds from the event will flow back into the football program, which coach Jedd Fisch has made clear needs more NIL investment in order to compete in the Big Ten. Montlake Futures clarified that more details about the event are soon to come.

Belichick was one of the headliners at Washington’s spring coaching clinic before appearing at practice and is one of a number of NFL coaches who Fisch and company have brought around the program in their short time on Montlake.

Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald spoke at the coaching clinic, former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, father of Huskies offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll, has been spotted at practice, while San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay have made stops in Seattle in recent months.

Now, Washington will extend that NFL influence to the fans. Not many other programs can say they can offer a dinner with an eight-time Super Bowl champion.

UFC adds Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Josh Fremd added to October Fight Night event

Powerful middleweights Abdul Razak Alhassan and Josh Fremd will look to get back on track in October.

A pair of powerful UFC middleweights are set to clash in October.

[autotag]Abdul Razak Alhassan[/autotag] and [autotag]Josh Fremd[/autotag] will look to get back into the winner’s column on Oct. 12 at a UFC Fight Night event. Two people with knowledge confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

The Oct. 12 event is expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, although the promotion has yet to officially announce a location and venue.

Alhassan (12-6 MMA, 6-6 UFC) will look to overcome the disappointment of his last appearance. At UFC on ESPN 59 earlier this month, Alhassan’s battle against Cody Brundage was ruled a no contest. Repeated blows to the back of Brundage’s head from Alhassan during a takedown defense sequence in the opening moments led to a fast and frustrating result for both parties.

Alhassan, 38, was submitted by Joe Pyfer in his prior outing last October. His last win was a second-round finish of Claudio Ribeiro in January 2023.

Fremd (11-6 MMA, 2-4 UFC) will look to re-enter the win column and halt a two-fight skid. The 30-year-old dropped back-to-back fights against Roman Kopylov and Andre Petroski. Fremd’s last victory came by unanimous decision against Jamie Pickett last August.

With the addition, the current lineup on Oct. 12 includes:

  • Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Josh Fremd
  • Grant Dawson vs. Rafa Garcia
  • Cody Garbrandt vs. Miles Johns
  • Themba Gorimbo vs. Niko Price
  • Jared Gooden vs. Chidi Njokuani
  • Clayton Carpenter vs. Lucas Rocha

Penei Sewell lands at No. 22 Top 100 NFL Players list

Penei Sewell lands at No. 22 Top 100 NFL Players list

Penei Sewell was rewarded with a new contract for his play on the field and now he has been recognized by his peers as one of the best players in the NFL. The Lions’ right tackle landed at No. 22 on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2024, his first appearance on the list.

Sewell is coming off an All-Pro season, one in which he was charged with just one sack allowed, per Pro Football Focus. The former Oregon tackle and No. 7 pick of the 2021 draft has quickly become one of the top tackles in the league, starting every game since coming into the league and is now a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

Sewell signed a four-year extension worth $112 million ($85 million guaranteed) this offseason to make him the highest-paid offensive tackle in NFL history.

Sewell joined wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in the top 25 of the list. The Sun God was right behind Sewell at No. 23. Overall, Sewell was the fifth Lion revealed on the list.

  • TE Sam LaPorta – No. 80
  • QB Jared Goff – No. 48
  • DE Aidan Hutchinson – No. 47
  • WR Amon-Ra St. Brown – No. 23
  • OT Penei Sewell – No. 22

With 20 players still to be revealed, could we still see left tackle Taylor Decker, who also just signed a new contract?

Overall, the Lions’ breakthrough 2023 season has given them a lot of respect throughout the league.  They already have more players on this list than they did last year (Goff, St. Brown, Hutchinson).

The Giants showed their pre-draft tags on all the players in the 2024 NFL Draft

The New York Giants showed their pre-draft designation tags on all the players in the 2024 NFL Draft

It’s always fascinating to learn what NFL teams thought of prospects ahead of the draft. We very rarely get any insight into that on the record, but the New York Giants opened up at least some of their thoughts for public consumption in the final episode of “Hard Knocks.”

Their basic thoughts on every player who was selected in the 2024 NFL Draft are visible in a screenshot that has circulated online. There are colored tags on several prospects that indicate something about how the Giants felt about them pre-draft.

Many players had no designations, which could be for any number of reasons. A lot of prospects did earn a color tag desingation.

Via some crowdsourced deductions from Doug Analytics on X (formerly Twitter), the color codes appear to be deciphered:

Blue: all-around good leader and teammate
Red: medical concerns
Purple: character/off-field concerns
Pink: undersized/measurement concerns
Grey: considered at multiple positions

It doesn’t list the prospects in the order the Giants ranked them, but seeing the different designations for the prospects offers some great insight into how the Giants evaluation team saw certain players and what their length and size thresholds might be at certain positions.

LeBron James reaches big Olympic career scoring milestone

LeBron James continues to add to his overall basketball resume and legacy.

Team USA men’s basketball is inching toward a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal. It easily defeated South Sudan on Wednesday after barely defeating it in an exhibition game earlier this month, and the concerns about Team USA are slowly dissolving.

LeBron James had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists in Wednesday’s contest, and he is continuing to prove that even at age 39, he is still a legitimately elite basketball player.

In Wednesday’s contest, James, who already owns two Olympic gold medals, as well as a bronze medal, reached a career scoring milestone. He joined Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony as the only players in Team USA men’s basketball history to attain 300 points in the Olympics.

Durant, of course, is one of James’ teammates on this iteration of Team USA.

Both have a long way to go before they can match or exceed the all-time record for most points scored in Olympic men’s basketball competition by any player. That mark is held by Brazilian legend Oscar Schmidt, who totaled 1,093 points throughout the 1980s and 1990s in five Olympic games.

It is a virtual certainty that this will be James’ last go-around in the Olympics as a player.

Two Kentucky Wildcats are on the Outland Trophy preseason watch list

Deone Walker and Eli Cox are both on the Outland Trophy preseason watch list.

First, Deone Walker and Max Hairston were announced as being on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Award. Then, Hairston made the preseason watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award. On Wednesday, the watch list for the Outland Trophy listed two Wildcats to watch.

The Outland Trophy is given each season to the best lineman in college football, whether it’s on offense or defense. Kentucky has one of each on the list.

Related: Kentucky’s last win against every SEC team

Deone Walker is the defensive representative on the list. At 6’6″, 345 lbs, he is a massive presence up front for the Wildcats. His performance has also been big, as he recorded 55 tackles, including 12.5 for a loss. He also rushed the quarterback well for someone his size, and totaled 7.5 sacks on the season.

On the offensive side of the ball, Eli Cox has developed into one of the country’s best centers. The sixth-year Senior is a team captain, and has 35 starts under his belt.

Obviously, fans will have to wait a while before finding out if any of the Wildcats win these awards. However, Big Blue Nation has to be happy to have so many talented players on this year’s squad.
