Jaren Jackson Jr. had a huge sequence in the Grizzlies game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

Sean Strickland calls out Paulo Costa: ‘I’m going to put him on his knees and f*ck him like Izzy’

Sean Strickland is seeking a fight with the “kind of dumb” Paulo Costa for his next UFC bout.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] wants a potential title eliminator with [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] for his next trip to the octagon this year.

After snapping a two-fight losing skid with a short-notice decision win over Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Fight Night 217 in January, Strickland (26-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) is looking to build his stock back up in the middleweight division, and sees former title challenger Costa as the appropriate next step.

“I want to fight Costa,” Strickland told MMA Junkie. “I know he’s in some contract negotiations. It was nice. The UFC pretty much said a no-consequence fight (against Imavov) – just go out there and have fun. I’ve got to be honest – I love when it’s like that. I would’ve stepped in to fight Ryan Spann this weekend if they would’ve offered me it. It’s so much better when you can go out there and fight and you’re going to make f*cking money and it doesn’t matter.”

Strickland and Costa are two of the more unique characters currently on the UFC roster. They polarize fans with their approach to social media, but when it comes to in the cage, Strickland thinks he can counter the power of the Brazilian.

“Costa’s a funny motherf*cker,” Strickland said. “He’s kind of dumb, and that says a lot coming from this f*cking guy. But he’s a funny motherf*cker, but I’m going to put him on his knees and f*ck him like Izzy (Adesanya).”

Strickland said he would be ready to sign a bout agreement to face Costa immediately, but would need some time to cut down to the middleweight division.

“I’m like 225 (pounds) – I’m fat right now,” Strickland said. “So give me like eight weeks. Eight, 10 weeks and let me make the weight and I’ll fight anybody.”

Alyssa Ustby named to All-ACC first team

North Carolina Tar Heel Alyssa Ustby has been named to the All-ACC first team.

North Carolina women’s basketball star [autotag]Alyssa Ustby[/autotag] has been named to the All-ACC first team, joining teammate Deja Kelly.

Ustby has been the ideal player for Courtney Banghart, giving UNC a player who can do it on both ends of the court. She has played an enormous role in North Carolina’s success, starting 73 of 80 games since 2019.

This year has been one of Ustbys’ best, with a career-best 13.2 points per game while averaging a career-high 51% from the field. Utsby’s ability to hit the glass has also seen consistency, leading UNC with 8.7 rebounds per game.

Ustby did spend some time on the sidelines this season, making the first-team nod even more special. She was sidelined due to injury, and the team felt her void going 2-3 in games played without her

Ustby has since returned to the court and already looks like herself. In North Carolina’s 45-41 win against Duke, Ustby finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

UNC will be counting on Utsby this postseason as they look to chase gold.

Diamond Heels take care of business at home

No. 13 UNC blast by VCU in a 10-4 victory on Tuesday night in Chapel Hill.

The North Carolina baseball team was in action Tuesday, and the bats were swinging early.

UNC hosted VCU in perfect 74-degree weather. Junior right-hand pitcher Jake Knapp got the start and was dealing early, with VCU starting with three scoreless innings.

In that same span, North Carolina had their bats hot out the gate, with Tomas Frick getting the first points on the board with a home run blasted to left field. Alberto Osuna matched Frick with a homer of his own in the same inning.

Frick’s bat continued to stay hot, hitting another home run in the third inning, but this time bringing in two runners for a three-run RBI.

The home run party continued in the fourth inning, with Vance Honeycutt getting in on the action. Mac Horvath became the fourth Tar Heel to homer, blasting one to left center in the sixth inning.

North Carolina would homer again in the eighth inning by Honeycutt, capping off a day full of hits. UNC takes it 10-4, improving to 5-3 on the season.

Michigan State basketball overcomes huge deficit, defeats Nebraska in Lincoln

It was very bad, but it then turned into very good in Lincoln when the Spartans overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat Nebraska:

It was an emotional roller coaster for Spartan Nation, but the Spartans were able to overcome a 15-point deficit to defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 80-67 in Lincoln on Tuesday night.

The first half could not have gone any worse for MSU, the team shot 27% from the field and could not stop anything Nebraska did. The deficit got as bad as 15 when the Cornhuskers took a 36-21 lead.

MSU was able to chip 3-points off of that lead, but went into the break down 38-26.

Shots started to fall in the second half for MSU, and the Spartans started mounting their comeback. MSU cut the lead to 3, but a quick 7-0 Nebraska run gave Nebraska a 55-45 lead. From that point on, it was all Spartans.

The Spartans went on a 35-12 run to end the game, storming back and winning a huge game on the road. Overall they outscored Nebraska 54-29 in the second half.

AJ Hoggard was a standout in the game, recording a double-double with 10 points and 14 assists in the game. Joey Hauser (20 points), Tyson Walker (19 points) and Jaden Akins (17 points) all had huge performances to will Michigan State to a win.

2023 NFL mock draft: Full 7-round projections for Bucs, trade-down version

Here’s what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could get in the 2023 NFL draft if they trade down in the first round and acquire additional picks

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to hit their 2023 NFL draft class out of the park, and the best way to make that happen is to acquire more dart throws by trading down from the No. 19 overall pick in the first round.

Thanks to a long list of key free agents on both sides of the ball, and a daunting salary cap situation, the Bucs have way more needs than draft picks this year. Trading down in the first round would allow them to grab additional picks on Day 2 and in the middle rounds, and increase their chances of rebuilding their depth and landing impact players in areas of need.

For this mock draft scenario, we’re imaging the Bucs have traded down with the Kansas City Chiefs, dropping down to the final pick in the first round, in return for the No. 64 overall pick in the second round, as well as the No. 135 pick in the fourth round.

In that scenario, here’s what the Bucs could come away with (projected compensatory picks via Tankathon):

Tennessee hammers Arkansas to drop Hogs below .500 in SEC

Arkansas didn’t look like an NCAA Tournament team on Tuesday night.

Tennessee didn’t need Zakai Zeigler on Tuesday night. Not with the way Arkansas played.

The Volunteers had no trouble with a Razorbacks team that looked outmatched for about the entire night in an 75-57 Tennessee win.

Zeigler, the Vols’ star point guard, left the game early in the first half with a potentially serious knee injury. The injury may hurt Tennessee going forward, but Tuesday night, Arkansas never led for even a second.

Arkansas had no answer for Tennessee on the inside. The Vols outscored the visitors 42-18 in the paint and 13-4 on second-chance points. The Razorbacks were forced to shoot more 3-pointers than coach Eric Musselman is normally comfortable with and went just 8 of 22 from range. Overall, Arkansas shot a measly 37% from the floor.

Olivier Nkamhoua led Tennessee with 16 points and chipped in seven rebounds. Santiago Vescovi wasn’t far behind, adding another 14 points.

Arkansas had four players in double figures, but no one had more than Anthony Black’s 13. He was the only Razorbacks player to shoot better than 50% from the fied, as well, as he went 6 for 9.

The Razorbacks close the regular season Saturday at home against Kentucky with a potential NCAA Tournament at stake.

Lakers are reportedly hopeful D’Angelo Russell will return on Friday

The Lakers could get a major reinforcement back when they host the Timberwolves on Friday.

The Los Angeles Lakers badly need some help, especially on the offensive end of the floor, with LeBron James expected to miss multiple weeks due to a right foot injury.

They fell to the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, 121-109, because they simply didn’t have the firepower to fight back when Ja Morant and company went on a surge in the third quarter.

Making matters worse for L.A. is the absence of point guard D’Angelo Russell, one of the players it received in the Russell Westbrook trade. He suffered a sprained ankle early in the win last Thursday over the Golden State Warriors and missed his second straight game on Tuesday.

He likely will not play Wednesday versus the Oklahoma City Thunder, but per Ramona Shelburne, the Lakers are hopeful he’ll be able to play on Friday when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Russell’s ability to score from all three levels, get players open shots, space the floor and generate easy baskets in transition will be a major help to a James-less Lakers team.

Ravens OC Todd Monken discusses trust between coaches and players

Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken discussed the trust between coaches and players

The Baltimore Ravens hired former University of Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken to be their next offensive coordinator after a four-year run with Greg Roman at the helm. Many are excited about what Monken can bring to the table as an offensive mind, and want to see him work with quarterback Lamar Jackson.

In terms of Jackson, his situation with Baltimore is murky at the moment, as no long-term extension has been reached. When asked if Jackson would be behind if a holdout potentially ensues, Monken talked about the trust between coaches and players, specifically quarterbacks.

“Sure, he’ll be behind, but it’s still just football. I think sometimes we make this out to be way too much. It’s just football. I don’t know when he started – maybe at five years old with the Purple Pounders or something in Miami or something. It’s just football. We’ll cater to what he knows, and play. It’s like any player. Any player is like that; the more time you spend with them, the more comfortable they get with any system or relationship. That’s a big part of it, and there’s a big part of that relationship from a quarterback-coordinator, play-caller, position coach where they’re comfortable and there’s a trust. That’s a big part of that, and that’s built over time, even beyond individual plays in that comfort of like, ‘Hey, we’re going to give you the keys to this car. Let’s see what you can do.’ That happens a lot more in the offseason – I’m kind of now expanding it – in the offseason is where you experiment. That’s kind of where you kind of let the quarterback have some reins with it. As you get closer to the season, that kind of goes away a little bit. You have to start game-planning and really be dialed into what you’re going to do.”

John Lynch on decision to delay Brock Purdy’s surgery

John Lynch explained why Brock Purdy’s surgery got pushed back, and when the 49ers expect the QB to undergo surgery.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was supposed to have surgery on Feb. 22 to either repair or reconstruct his torn UCL. The day before his surgery, news broke that his procedure would be delayed until at least early May. General manager John Lynch on Tuesday provided some clarity on that decision-making process.

While the 49ers would like to have Purdy back as quickly as possible, Lynch from the NFL combine said the long-term view was important when considering all options with the elbow surgery. He also indicated Purdy’s surgery would happen during the first week of March.

“That’s a tough decision to make, but I really appreciate the courage and the conviction to make that decision,” Lynch said. “It’s all about the best outcome. Is it ideal? No, for a variety of reasons, time being number one you want every waking minute that you have, but ultimately, he’s 22 years old. We want the best outcome. And that’s where Dr. Meister made a really tough decision and we’re very appreciative. And he’s done thousands of these surgeries and when you have all the swelling out, when you have all the stiffness out, is when he’s had the best success with the outcomes. And so, we’re very thankful and we’re hopeful that when they meet down in Arizona this week they can move forward and then it would be early next week as to when they would go in there and have the surgery.”

The estimated timelines for return have been pretty consistent. If Purdy needs a repair, his timeline for return is slated for six months. If he needs a reconstruction it would likely be a 9-to-12 month recovery timeline.

Lynch said at the combine that the team won’t ultimately determine a timeline until after the surgery is performed since the way Purdy tore his UCL is atypical.

“There’s a variety of different timeframes and Dr. Meister had a great line that I can’t share with you, but it was very clever just about how he doesn’t have a crystal ball and every player’s different,” Lynch said. “Every person’s different, so timelines are just that, they’re guidelines, but we’ll see. The reality is the majority of these are done on baseball players. This is not a baseball injury. Even the way in which it happened, Brock’s going to throw on and a 250-pound man with an opposing force, it’s a different injury and so, the outcomes are different and we’ll see where it goes.”

Now the team is up against the clock with trying to get him back for the start of the regular season and determining what they need to do to fill out their QB room in free agency, which begins March 13.

While this season will surely be front of mind for the 49ers, there’s a chance Purdy is their franchise QB. That’s why the long-term view is so important, and the team appears ready to let doctors take whatever time they need to ensure whenever Purdy does return he’s doing so at full strength with minimal risk of re-injury.
