Ken Norton upsets Muhammad Ali in the first of their fights

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbYtHaduVZ8

Muhammad Ali had few genuine rivals. The most obvious one was Joe Frazier, who lost two of three classic fights to “The Greatest” but took him to hell in the process. And there was Ken Norton. The strapping heavyweight also met Ali in a three-fight series, the first a non-title bout on this date in 1973 at the Sports Arena in Norton’s adopted hometown of San Diego. Ali proved his toughness by fighting 11-plus rounds with a broken jaw but the underdog, younger and fitter than his iconic opponent, outworked him to earn a 12-round split-decision victory that established him as a major player in the division and spoiled Ali’s immediate plans to challenge champion George Foreman. They fought again less than six months later, with a better-conditioned Ali emerging with a split-decision victory in the rematch. Still, it was Norton who would get first crack at Foreman. And things didn’t go well for him, as he failed to survive two full rounds. Seven months after that Ali would make boxing history but stopping Foreman in arguably the greatest victory of his magnificent career. Ali and Norton would meet for the final time in 1976, with Ali winning a unanimous decision in another close fight. Some believe Norton should’ve had his hand raised in the all three fights.

Also on this date: Larry Holmes stopped hulking Leroy Jones in eight rounds in defense of his heavyweight title in 1980. And Mike Weaver stunned undefeated John Tate by scoring a knockout in the 15th and final round of a fight he was losing on the cards to win a heavyweight belt.

Packers will play 10 games against 2020 playoff teams in 2021

The Packers have the 8th hardest schedule by win percentage in 2021.

The addition of a 17th regular-season game in 2021 means the Green Bay Packers will play 10 games against 2020 playoff teams next season.

The AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs were added to the Packers’ list of opponents as part of the NFL’s expansion to 17 games. The Chiefs will join the Chicago Bears (twice), New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and the Washington Football Team as playoff teams on the Packers’ schedule in 2021.

Seven of the 10 teams finished above .500.

The only NFC playoff team from last year that the Packers won’t face in next year’s regular season is the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Overall, Green Bay’s opponents had an overall record of 133-122-1 last season, giving the Packers the NFL’s eighth-hardest schedule by win percentage in 2021.

Of course, last season’s finish guarantees nothing about next year. Not all playoff teams from 2020 will make the postseason again in 2021. But the Packers’ schedule also features games against the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings, three teams that didn’t make the postseason in 2020 but could rebound and be legit playoff contenders next season.

The Packers were 4-2 against playoff teams during the regular season in 2020, with wins over the Saints, Bears (twice) and Tennessee Titans and losses to the Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. The Packers beat the Rams and lost to the Buccaneers in the playoffs.

By win percentage, the Steelers have the hardest schedule in the NFL next season.

Of note, the Bears, Vikings and Detroit Lions all have harder schedules by win percentage.

Among the quarterbacks the Packers will face in 2021: Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Matthew Stafford, Kirk Cousins, Kyler Murray, Ben Roethlisberger and Baker Mayfield.

Packers opponents (2020 record)

Home: Chicago Bears (8-8), Detroit Lions (5-11), Minnesota Vikings (7-9), Cleveland Browns (11-5), Los Angeles Rams (10-6), Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4), Seattle Seahawks (12-4), Washington Football Team (7-9)

Away: Chicago Bears (8-8), Detroit Lions (5-11), Minnesota Vikings (7-9), Arizona Cardinals (8-8), Baltimore Ravens (11-5), Cincinnati Bengals (4-11-1), Kansas City Chiefs (14-2), New Orleans Saints (12-4), San Francisco 49ers (6-10)

Colts head coach states obvious about Notre Dame

What Notre Dame offensive lineman do you think the Colts would be most-interested in?

I won’t rip on Frank Reich for answering a question he was asked but he provided an answer about Notre Dame football that anyone who watches college football is aware of.

Reich, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, who currently employ perhaps the best offensive guard in the NFL in Quenton Nelson, was at Notre Dame’s pro day on Wednesday and shared the following about the Fighting Irish football program.

The Colts are looking for offensive line help and as much as Nelson changed the makeup of Indianapolis’s offensive front, there are holes that need to be filled this off-season.

Whenever I see a coach at a team’s pro day I immediately start wondering which player they’re the most interested in potentially drafting, and I can’t help but think it’s one of the four offensive linemen Notre Dame could see selected in April’s NFL draft.

49ers sitting just inside top half in EPSN post-free agency power rankings

Jimmy Garoppolo and health will be the two biggest factors in determining how the 49ers fit in the NFL power rankings.

There are a few more significant offseason moves for the 49ers to make with free agency mostly winding down and the NFL draft coming up at the end of April. Their roster could look significantly different once all the dust settles by Week 1, but they find themselves in a pretty good spot in the post-free agency power rankings released by ESPN.

San Francisco with free agency mostly finished ranks No. 13, down four spots from their spot in ESPN’s ‘way-too-early’ rankings earlier this season.

Placing the 49ers in the NFL hierarchy is difficult to do given how their last two seasons went. Their roster looks largely the same as it did last year when injuries to a slew of key players throughout the season derailed their NFC championship defense. There’s an argument to be made that their offense looks better than it did in 2019 when they went to the Super Bowl, while their defense could have trouble reaching the elite level it hit that same season.

Given a clean bill of health though, their roster before the draft looks like one that can contend in the NFC. The biggest question mark is under center though, which is what pushes them out of the top eight range, and is what will keep them from being a consensus Super Bowl contender.

The draft still has to shake out, and depending on Jimmy Garoppolo’s future, the 49ers could wind up moving either up or down a few spots by the time the season starts. The good news is they’re in a position to win it all should things break their way in 2021, but the bigger story will be their future at quarterback and how that player helps them be in a position to win championships for years to come.

Lakers news: LeBron James gets score request granted by Spectrum

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James asked the team’s TV affiliate for more of the time and score on the game broadcast.

LeBron James is always going to keep you on your toes. That includes being the television affiliate of his basketball team. On Wednesday night, the fine folks at Spectrum SportsNet learned that lesson. During the first half of Wednesday night’s Bucks-Lakers game, James noticed the local Lakers broadcast was missing the time and score on the screen.

The problem clearly persisted long enough for James to say something on his Twitter page, tagging both the Spectrum SportsNet and Lakers accounts. While James was very polite in his wording, the tagging made it clear that somebody needed to get this figured out, network or team.

James was trying to be as polite as possible, however.

Spectrum, of course, was quick to respond and remedy the issue.

Not everyone can be on their best every day. Luckily for Spectrum SportsNet, the Lakers star player was at home rehabbing his injury and watching their broadcast to make sure they were doing things the right way.

Kevin Porter Jr. battles Kyrie Irving as Rockets fade late versus Nets

Houston led by 18 points in the game’s opening minutes, but Irving (32 points, 12 assists) and the Nets took control in the second half.

Promising second-year guard Kevin Porter Jr. had a team-high 20 points (56.3% FG) and 6 assists, but the Houston Rockets lost Wednesday’s game to Kyrie Irving and host Brooklyn, 120-108 (box score). The star-studded Nets (33-15) have now won 19 of their last 22 games.

Houston raced out to a 24-6 lead in the game’s opening minutes and scored 42 points in the first quarter, but the Nets seized control as the game moved forward. Irving led the way with a game-high 32 points and 12 assists, while former Houston star James Harden added 17 points before leaving early with right hamstring tightness. Brooklyn sharpshooter Joe Harris scored 28, with seven made 3-pointers (58.3%).

Star center Christian Wood had 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Rockets, but he shot a disappointing 4-of-12 (33.3%) and had three turnovers. Danuel House Jr. scored 18 and hit 4-of-8 from 3-point range (50.0%), while veteran reserves Kelly Olynyk and DJ Augustin added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Usual starting point guard John Wall did not play due to a left knee injury, and his return timetable is unclear.

Houston’s offense increasingly struggled throughout the game as Brooklyn transitioned to more switching on defense, which head coach Stephen Silas made clear in his postgame comments (see below).

The Rockets (13-34) return to action on Friday night in Boston. For now, here’s a look at highlights and postgame reaction from Brooklyn.

Former Notre Dame captain nets first career NHL goal

Props to Steven Fogarty for his first NHL goal!

Former Notre Dame hockey star Steven Fogarty played for the Fighting Irish from the 2012-13 season through 2015-16 and captained the team for his final two years.

Since graduating from Notre Dame, Fogarty played in the New York Rangers system and skated in 18 games over the past three seasons.  Fogarty signed a free-agent deal with the Buffalo Sabres last fall and was recently brought up to the big-squad.

On Wednesday night with the Sabres taking on the Philadelphia Flyers, Fogarty did something he never had previously in his NFL career:

Scored a goal.

Check it out below:

It’s been a forgettable season for the Sabres who entered play Wednesday just 6-23-5, but it was a memorable moment for the former Notre Dame star.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Colorado Rockies Thursday in a season opener at Coors Field. First pitch slated for 4:10 p.m. ET and will be aired on ESPN. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Dodgers vs. Rockies odds with MLB picks and predictions.

LHP Clayton Kershaw is the Dodgers’ projected starting pitcher. He was 6-2 with a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 9.6 K/9 and 1.2 BB/9 in 58 1/3 IP across 10 starts last season.

  • 2020 vs. Rockies: 1-0, 1.29 ERA (7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 K) in 1 start
  • Career vs. Rockies: 24-8, 3.22 ERA (268 IP, 96 ER) in 43 starts

RHP German Marquez is expected to start for the Rockies. He was 4-6 with a 3.75 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 8.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 81 2/3 IP over 13 starts last season.

  • 2020 vs. Dodgers: 0-0, 2.57 ERA (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K) in 1 start

  • Money line: Dodgers -225 (bet $225 to win $100) | Rockies +195 (bet $100 to win $195)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Dodgers -2.5 (-105) | Rockies +2.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 11 (O: -110 | U: -110

Prediction

Dodgers 6, Rockies 4

Money line (ML)

PASS. The defending World Series champion Dodgers (-225) are a better-than 2-to-1 favorites. Betting $225 to win $100 is just not a smart way to make money in the long run. PASS.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

BetMGM likes Kershaw and the Dodgers so much in this one that they’re favored by 2.5 runs with a price of -105.

PASS as I won’t lay 2.5 runs, but the alternate line of LOS ANGELES -1.5 (-150) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager.

While the Dodgers traded OF Joc Pederson to the Chicago Cubs and lost OF/2B Kiké Hernández to a free-agent deal with the Boston Red Sox, the offense pretty much remains intact.

That offense led a club that went 43-17 in last year’s 60-game shortened season before eventually winning it all.

The Dodgers were the dominant team in the majors in 2020 and they’re the favorite to repeat in 2021.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back UNDER 11 (-110) with a HALF-UNIT wager. The Rockies were 13-14-3 O/U at home last season. The O/U was 1-2-1 in the four Dodgers-Rockies games played at Coors in 2020. Kershaw was the winning pitcher in one of those Under games in Denver when the Dodgers claimed a 6-1 victory Sept. 19.

Boston College Eagles

There’s a lot to like in Year Two under Jeff Hafley, the pass-heavy team should be stronger, and there’s a nice three game tune-up to get ready for the start of the real season that should under with one big thud. The Eagles will win one they shouldn’t lose one they shouldn’t, and go bowling with at least six wins.

Clemson Tigers

It’s all up to the opener against Georgia. That’s the one realistic shot at a loss with a relatively easy-looking ACC slate with no North Carolina or Miami. With a polite nod to Alabama, this should be the best team in college football with nothing more than the annual way-too-close-call brain cramp – maybe at Louisville or Pitt – to worry about.

Florida State Seminoles

It’s Florida State – at some point it has to be good again. It’s not like the ACC is anything killer this year – the Noles will drop the road games to the strong Clemson and North Carolina teams – and there won’t be a win over Florida or Notre Dame. Start with those four losses and hope to push for six wins with few home blips and a win in one of the 50/50 road dates against Wake Forest or Boston College.

Louisville Cardinals

Considering Clemson is a home date, there isn’t a game on the slate the Cardinals can’t win. However, there are more than enough tough battles that could go either way to be concerned. There has to be a win over UCF, Virginia or Kentucky at home, or against Ole Miss in Atlanta to kick things off.

Can the Orange block anyone? The O line has to come together fast. The season should come down to two home games – Rutgers and Liberty. There will be a few ACC wins, but the difference between a solid season or another dud will come down to the early September games. Go at least 3-1 to start, or there’s going to be a problem even with a relatively okay slate.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

You know exactly how this works under Dave Clawson. The Demon Deacons will overachieve and win a few ACC games in fun shootouts, they won’t have enough in a few of the bigger road games, and they’ll somehow work their way to six-to-eight wins on the way to a bowl game. However, there’s one big concern – North Carolina. It’s technically a non-conference game instead of playing some cream-puff to boost up the record.

There’s a base of three wins built into the cake – Charlotte, North Carolina A&T and Kansas – but where else are the Blue Devils going to make any noise without a massive overall improvement? There will be one win somewhere – like against Georgia Tech – and there will probably be an upset or two along the way, but they’ll be double-digit dogs for most of the ACC season.

However, going to BYU won’t be a breeze, but there are only two road games after October 9th.
