Ilima-Lei Macfarlane: Paige VanZant wouldn’t deserve immediate title shot in Bellator

Bellator flyweight champ Ilima-Lei Macfarlane knows Paige VanZant “would bring really good publicity to our division,” but she has to earn her keep.

Undefeated Bellator flyweight champion [autotag]Ilima Lei-Macfarlane[/autotag] doesn’t exactly have a long list of real title challengers in front of her.

She’s already successfully defended her crown four times, and the worldwide coronavirus pandemic ground the fight game to a halt for months, which prevented new contenders from building momentum.

But the Bellator schedule is back up and running. And sooner or later, Macfarlane (11-0 MMA, 10-0 BMMA), as one of the company’s biggest draws, will be expected to get back in the cage.

There’s a fighter out there on the free agent market who, from a pure name value perspective, would bring more attention than anyone else she could meet at this moment: [autotag]Paige VanZant[/autotag]. The former UFC star recently fought out her contract, leading to speculation as to where she’ll land next.

Macfarlane understands that VanZant would help shine the spotlight on the company. But she also knows that VanZant has lost four of her past six fights, including two of her past three, which came after she moved up to flyweight from strawweight.

And that’s enough, in Macfarlane’s mind, to come to the conclusion VanZant would have to earn her keep should she sign with Bellator.

“I think that she would bring really good publicity to our division,” Macfarlane told MMA Junkie Radio. “And you know, would I necessarily say that she should get a title shot right off the bat? Of course not. I don’t think so at all. But, like for future matches, yeah, I would totally welcome that.”

Recent scuttlebutt has it VanZant could wind up in Bare Knuckle FC. Macfarlane believes the former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant will end up wherever she can get the best deal.

“I think that she’s a smart girl, and she’s gonna go where, I think she’s going to bare-knuckle boxing,” she said. “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that, but, yeah, I think that she should go where she’s going to be treated well and paid well.”

So that leaves Macfarlane at Square 1 as she tries to figure out who’s next. Juliana Velasquez has made a legit case for a title shot, but she’s based in Brazil, which presents logistical issues in the COVID-19 era.

“It’s difficult with the travel ban, obviously,” Macfarlane said. “One of the No. 1 contenders, Juliana Velasquez, is in Brazil, and it’s really hard to get her over here because of the travel ban, so a lot of the contenders who are stateside are coming off of losses, so it’s kind of tricky. We’re kind of in limbo as far as a title fight goes.”

Macfarlane has an idea in the meantime: How about fighting up a weight class, just to get a fight in?

“I have proposed an idea. I’m like, ‘Well, we really don’t know how long this is going to last, so how would you feel about fighting me at bantamweight?” she said.  “That way people, for lack of a better term, won’t get their panties in a twist that Juliana isn’t fighting for the belt or with the whole title stuff. Why don’t we just fight a bantamweight fight against a stateside girl? I just want to keep active and give me a fight in 2020. We’re working on it.”

Video: Ak & Barak: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Danny Garcia is big

Errol Spence Jr. and Danny Garcia reportedly have agreed to fight in November.

Errol Spence Jr. and Danny Garcia reportedly have agreed to fight in November, although that date could be pushed back if it becomes possible for fans to attend the event.

Spence, ranked No. 7 on the Boxing Junkie pound-for-pound list, survived a horrific one-car accident in October. Thus, some assumed that the welterweight titleholder would take a tune-up fight instead of jumping into the ring with a genuine threat.

Well, Spence is rolling the dice. Garcia is a former two-division titleholder and one of the top 147-pounderes in the business.

In this episode of The Ak & Barak Show, courtesy of DAZN, hosts Akin Reyes and Barak Bess discuss what is arguably the most-compelling post-lockdown matchup.

Here’s what they had to say.

Ja Morant rises up late but Grizzlies unable to beat Trail Blazers

After struggling in the first half, Ja Morant nearly led the Grizzlies to victory over Damian Lillard and the Trail Blazers.

[jwplayer AFUUcqVf]

Ja Morant didn’t have his best stuff early on Friday in the season restart opener but the rookie nearly willed the Memphis Grizzlies to a victory before falling to the Portland Trail Blazers in overtime, 140-135.

Morant struggled to open up after tallying just two points on 1-of-5 shooting from the field in the first half. He came out in the second half more aggressive, which became the turning point of the game, as he nearly led the Grizzlies back by himself.

Morant helped erase an eight-point halftime deficit as he took over in the third quarter. He scored or assisted on five consecutive possessions as the Grizzlies outscored the Trail Blazers by 11 points in the period. Morant scored 11 of his 22 total points in the third quarter alone to take a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter but the Trail Blazers, led by C.J. McCollum and Carmelo Anthony, chipped away at the deficit and nearly won the game in regulation before going into overtime. From there, the Trail Blazers dominated the extra time to walk away with a key victory.

The victory for the Trail Blazers moved them to within 2.5 games of the Grizzlies in eighth place. Currently, the two teams would participate in a play-in tournament if the season ended since the Trail Blazers are within four games of eighth place.

In the end, the Grizzlies had opportunities to put the Trail Blazers away but were unable to capitalize. Morant also dished out 11 assists but will need to put together more of a complete game to help the Grizzlies win throughout the rest of the seeding games.

The Grizzlies play next on Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs.

Jake Smith sports a new jersey number

Texas’ offense is set to have a breakout season. One of the candidates to have the biggest role is WR, Jake Smith, will have a new number.

Texas’ offense is set to have a breakout season with new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. One of the candidates to play the biggest role is wide receiver, Jake Smith.

Dawning No. 16 during his freshman season, the now sophomore will have a new number on his jersey this season. Smith will be switching to No. 7 and sharing the number with junior safety Caden Sterns.

Smith caught 25 passes for 274 yards and six touchdowns last season. With Devin Duvernay off to the NFL, the sophomore is going to become Texas’ main slot receiver. He and Jordan Whittington will fight for playing time, but Smith has a year of experience.

The taking of No. 7 explains why graduate transfer Tarik Black will be wearing No. 0 for Texas. During his three seasons at Michigan, Black wore No. 7. Now, he will be the first player to ever sport the unique number for the Texas Longhorns.

Sixers believe Pacers will be test for Shake Milton as new point guard

The Philadelphia 76ers are expecting a lot of pressure from the Indiana Pacers on Shake Milton.

The Philadelphia 76ers are implementing a brand new lineup as they get set to resume the season in Orlando and one of those moves includes moving second-year guard Shake Milton into the starting lineup as the point guard in place of Al Horford.

For the Sixers to achieve what they want to do on offense with Milton in the lineup and Ben Simmons at the power forward spot, he will need to understand that he must be better defensively and he has to handle the pressure that other teams will throw at him.

For example, in their second scrimmage game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, waves of defenders were thrown his way and he committed a couple of bad turnovers that will need to be cleaned up. Coach Brett Brown was happy that the Thunder did that as Milton will need some experience against that and the Indiana Pacers will probably do the same thing on Saturday.

“I think it’s as good as any test that you can find,” said Brown. “I feel that it’s just imminent. It’s not if, it’s going to be when, and you’d expect that if I’m guessing, straight out the gate, they’re going to jump him. You’re going to see defensive players play a lot of run-slide-run and slide-run-slide, full-court pressure, stuff that you would think you might see more in a college game than perhaps an NBA game, I’m anticipating.”

Indiana is a smaller team that is going to do their best to force Philadelphia into a ton of turnovers so they can get out in transition. They will send active defenders such as Malcolm Brogdon, Aaron Holiday, T.J. McConnell, and others. So this will be a nice test for Milton to see what it is going to be like for them moving forward.

“If I’m wrong, well then no harm, but it’s not anything that we feel we’re going to get surprised at,” Brown added. “How we handle that, I won’t go through now, but we’ve talked about it, we’ve practiced against it, and I think it’s going to extend to other teams, not just Indiana.”

The official tipoff for the NBA restart is at 7:00 p.m. EST for the Sixers on Saturday. [lawrence-related id=35884,35874,35865]
