Liga MX Clausura 2024 top scorers: Tracking the Golden Boot race

An updated list of the top scorers in Liga MX for the 2024 Clausura season

The battle to be the top goalscorer in Liga MX promises to be fierce.

Liga MX’s Golden Boot winner is frequently a tight race, just as it was as Harold Preciado claimed last season’s award, finishing atop the 2023 Apertura scoring table with 11 goals.

Preciado will join players like Andre-Pierre Gignac, Ángel Sepúlveda, and possibly even U.S. men’s national team forward Brandon Vazquez as a contender to lead Mexico’s top flight in goals.

Veteran marksman Salomón Rondón’s arrival could see him get into the mix, while players like Rogelio Funes Mori and Gabriel Fernández could benefit from moves within Liga MX.

Here is an updated list of the top scorers in Liga MX for the Clausura 2024 season

Chivas vs Club America: How to watch, TV channel, live stream

The rivals are set to face off for the third time in just 10 days

For the third time in just 10 days, arch-rivals Club América and Chivas are set to face off.

Fresh off a two-leg Concacaf Champions Cup last-16 matchup, the two sides will meet in a Liga MX match in Guadalajara on Saturday night.

América got the better of its rival in continental competition, though both sides won a match in the last-16 tie. Las Aguilas started off with a 3-0 away win in the first leg, before Chivas won 3-2 in the second leg in Mexico City.

That result saw América reach the quarterfinal with a 5-3 aggregate win.

Campeones Cup 2023: How to watch LAFC vs. Tigres

Bragging rights are on the line as reigning league champions from MLS and Liga MX face off

Bragging rights and a trophy will be on the line on Wednesday night as Los Angeles FC and Tigres face off in the 2023 Campeones Cup.

The game at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles will be the fifth edition of the Campeones Cup, which is held between the reigning champions of MLS Cup and the Campeón de Campeones from Liga MX.

LAFC won a thrilling 2022 MLS Cup on penalties over the Philadelphia Union while Tigres, the reigning Liga MX Clausura champion, beat Pachuca, the reigning Apertura champion, in the 2023 Campeón de Campeones.

MLS is hoping to make it four straight Campeones Cup titles, with NYCFC defeating Atlas 2-0 in last year’s match. Tigres is the only Liga MX team to win the prize, having defeated Toronto FC in the inaugural Campeones Cup in 2018.

For LAFC, the game will also be a shot at redemption after it fell to Club Léon in June’s CONCACAF Champions League final.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s game.

Another much-hyped Mexico prospect leaves Europe to join Tigres

Marcelo Flores was a highly touted prospect at Arsenal, but has now headed to Liga MX

The hype around Marcelo Flores at this time last year was growing exponentially.

A rising star in Arsenal’s academy, Flores earned the first of his three senior caps with Mexico at age 18. He then made the bench for the Gunners senior team for the first time in April 2022.

After fully committing his international future to Mexico over Canada and England, there was even talk of Flores making a late bid for a World Cup roster spot with El Tri.

But following a difficult loan spell with Spanish second division side Real Oviedo last season, Flores is following a path that other much-hyped Mexican prospects have traveled recently.

On Sunday, the 19-year-old’s transfer from Arsenal to Tigres was confirmed. The Evening Standard reported that the fee was £2 million.

Flores marks the third young Mexican to leave Europe and sign with Tigres just this year.

Diego Lainez, who like Flores has at times over the years been considered a future superstar, joined Tigres on loan in January. He was followed by Eugenio Pizzuto, who spent time with Lille and Braga before returning home to Mexico this summer.

All three players were 22 or younger when making the move to Tigres.

Amid some criticism of the transfer, Tigres manager Robert Siboldi defended Flores by insisting that the move was driven by the desire for playing time, not money.

Siboldi added that he would not consider the transfer to be a setback for Flores.

“He comes to earn his place, he is very motivated and I am very happy [to sign] a young man with experience, with training from other places that is supposed to be more demanding,” Siboldi told a press conference.

“Why don’t we see everything that can arise? A player comes to Mexico because something has happened, they haven’t had the minutes they wanted. They have the desire to play above the economic aspect.

“They can be at Real Madrid, at Manchester United and not play … it doesn’t mean that if they come to Tigres, Rayados or any team from Mexico that it’s a setback.”

Hermoso gets hero’s welcome at Pachuca on same day Rubiales resigns

The Spain star played her first minutes since the World Cup final in a 2-1 Pachuca win over Pumas

Jenni Hermoso was given an emotional tribute on Sunday as she made her return to Pachuca after winning the World Cup with Spain.

The 33-year-old has been at the center of a global scandal surrounding an unwanted kiss from Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales in the aftermath of the World Cup final last month.

Hermoso has insisted the kiss was not consensual, with players and fans all over the globe uniting to support her.

Hermoso returned to her club team in Mexico on Sunday, ironically the same day that saw Rubiales finally resign amid weeks of intense pressure.

Fans at the Estadio Hidaldo unveiled a massive tifo of Hermoso, showing her lifting the World Cup trophy with the flags of Mexico and Spain on either side.

Hermoso’s teammates would also give her a guard of honor as she entered the pitch wearing her World Cup winner’s medal.

Prior to the game, Hermoso was presented with a framed No. 10 jersey as she received a huge ovation from the crowd.

Pachuca would defeat Pumas 2-1 in the game, with Hermoso entering as an 85th minute substitution for her first minutes since she played the full match in a 1-0 World Cup final win over England on August 20.

Leagues Cup 2023: Standings, teams, schedule, TV and streaming

Your complete guide to the 2023 Leagues Cup

The first-ever Leagues Cup will see MLS and Liga MX clubs halt league play for a month-long tournament across the U.S. and Canada in July and August.

The tournament begins on July 21, with 15 three-team groups based on geography featuring a mix of teams from both leagues. Each group will feature round-robin play, with the top two finishers advancing to a knockout stage featuring one-off matches running through to a final on August 19.

The champion of the Leagues Cup will secure a place in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16, while the losing finalist and the third-place game winner will also gain a place in the CCC’s first round.

The entire Leagues Cup will take place in the United States or in Canada, with matches between Liga MX sides picked based on geography in the group stage and at neutral sites in the knockout round.

While standard rules will be in place for games that end with a winner and a loser (three points for the victors, none for their opponent), the Leagues Cup will discard draws. Games that are tied at full time will proceed to a penalty kick tiebreaker, with the winner of that shootout receiving two points while the loser gets one.

All matches will air on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app, while select games are on Televisa, Univision, FOX Sports, TSN and RDS.

Atlas Twitter account having normal one, cites Hitler in complaint over offside call

This is just one great big yikes

There is a long, winding and tortuous road that must be travelled to get from “being mad about an offside call” to a final destination of “citing Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels,” but the Atlas FC Twitter account took that cursed journey on Monday.

Nothing good will come from utilizing the Third Reich to get your point across about a Leagues Cup game, but the Liga MX club tried anyway when discussing a call from the previous night’s game against NYCFC.

Did we mention the call actually went in favor of Atlas and also that it won the match? Those facts are both beside the point and yet still even more mind-blowing when examining a tweet that — to be clear — referenced two of the principal architects of World War 2 and the Holocaust.

With Atlas leading 1-0 in Sunday’s match, NYCFC appeared to notch a late equalizer through Justin Haak. After a VAR review, however, the goal was disallowed and Atlas would hold on for the win.

The protests against that call were apparently too much for the Atlas Twitter account to take, as it opted to use Hitler and his chief propagandist to make a very normal and salient point about analysts breaking down the offside call.

Several hours after it was posted, Atlas would delete the tweet and issue an apology.

To all social media managers (and just, people): Unless you are talking specifically about World War 2 and/or the Holocaust, the Nazi references are probably a bad idea!

Martino: Messi and Busquets will both debut vs Cruz Azul in Leagues Cup

The legendary duo are both set to make their first Inter Miami appearance on Friday

Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino expects both Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets to play in Friday’s Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul, but isn’t sure if either will start.

Messi and Busquets officially signed with Inter Miami over the weekend, with the longtime teammates each taking part in their first training session with the MLS club on Tuesday.

Neither player has been involved in a competitive match for more than a month: Messi last played in an Argentina friendly against Australia on June 15, while the most recent game for Busquets was Barcelona’s May 28 La Liga match against Mallorca.

Speaking to ESPN Fútbol 12 in Argentina, Martino nevertheless said he expects both players to make their Inter Miami debut on Friday.

“From what I have seen up to now they are going fit to play and it is likely that on Friday they can be there,” Martino said. “Whether that will be as starters or coming in at the half, we will have to make that decision yet, but as I see it, Leo as well as Busi can play [on Friday].”

Martino added that much like Messi has said himself, he believes the 36-year-old’s desire to compete and win will keep him from taking his foot off the gas in MLS.

“What has not changed is his desire to continue competing and winning,” Martino said. “I think it shows a very salient trait Leo has as a football player. His perpetual desire to compete and win. I think that winning the World Cup took a great weight off his back.

“But someone I admire a lot told me that he is coming to MLS carrying an empty suitcase but without all the pressure he had in Barcelona in 2010-2011 or the pressure of the national team. Now, I think I am going to find a very competitive version of him because he has the need to win wearing this shirt now, because he has not won here yet.”

Photo by CHANDAN KHANNA/AFP via Getty Images

Martino, who previously won MLS Cup as head coach of Atlanta United, added that there are some unique factors in MLS that even legendary players like Messi and Busquets will need to get used to.

“This is a very physical league, and you have to be in great shape to compete,” Martino said. “There have been very good footballers who have come and at first it has always been difficult for them, because you have to adapt to a football that is not better, not worse, but different.

“Then it’s a very busy league, many long trips, different weather conditions, competition during the week, so you have to have a competitive squad.”

Messi to make Inter Miami debut July 21 vs. Cruz Azul, says owner

A Leagues Cup clash against the Liga MX side looks like it’ll be the big occasion

Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas has said the club is targeting a July 21 game against Cruz Azul for Lionel Messi’s debut.

Messi announced his intention to join Inter Miami two weeks ago, with the deal set to be finalized imminently.

If all goes according to plan, the ex-Barcelona and PSG star will debut at Inter Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium, taking on the Mexican power in the newly expanded Leagues Cup that features every MLS and Liga MX team.

The get-in price for the Inter Miami-Cruz Azul clash is currently more than $1100 on TicketSmarter.

In an interview with a small group of media outlets, including the Miami Herald, Mas added that no MLS rules had been changed for the club to add the Argentina superstar.

“[There were] absolutely no changes in the roster rules,” Mas said. “There are no categories or anything that is being changed to incorporate Lionel Messi onto Inter Miami’s roster.”

The Miami Herald reported that Messi would sign a two-and-a-half-year deal worth $50 million to $60 million per year with an option for 2026. The deal will also include equity in the club after Messi’s retirement.

After a years-long pursuit of the World Cup winner, Mas said he expected the signing to be a seminal moment for MLS.

“I think there will always be a before and after Messi when we talk about the sport in the United States,” Mas said. “I have a very, very strong-held belief that we can create in North America and the United States if not the greatest league, one of the top two leagues in the world. I cannot over emphasize the magnitude of this announcement.”

Mas also said that he expected every game Messi plays in to be sold out, adding that the club is looking to add around 3,000 seats to DRV PNK Stadium, which would put capacity around 22,000.

“We are gearing up to do that work in the next four weeks,” Mas said of the stadium increase. “Every game will be sold out. The demand for tickets has been 10 times what we can handle on a season ticket basis.”

Will Gregg Berhalter be the next Club America coach? We may know this week

Berhalter is in demand on both sides of the Atlantic

Gregg Berhalter has said he has options, and Club América may well be on his list.

The Mexico City club is without a coach after Fernando Ortíz’s resignation in May, and reports from TUDN and ESPN have both said that the former (and still possibly future?) U.S. men’s national team boss is a strong candidate to take over at Estadio Azteca.

Those reports gained steam after remarks from the club’s director of football Santiago Baños, who acknowledged the Berhalter rumors among a long list of other prominent names linked to the Águilas job.

“There’s been a list of 37 [candidates] that has come out, including Berhalter, [Eduardo] Coudet, [André] Jardine, [Hernán] Crespo, [Fernando] Gago,” Baños said on an appearance on TUDN show Línea de 4. “That’s just today, in addition to those that have come in recent weeks.”

Baños took the time to rule out Javier Aguirre, one of the many candidates being bandied about, but notably did not do the same when Berhalter’s name came up.

Adding to the situation, Baños gave a broad description of what América wants out of their next head coach, and it aligns with the general perception of who the 49-year-old Berhalter is as a manager.

“We want someone young, with up-to-date ideas, a clear methodology,” explained Baños. “Someone offensive-minded, able to keep possession and high pressure.”

Whether their top choice is Berhalter or anyone else on the apparently endless list, the club plans to announce their hire by Saturday.

“Now, we are very advanced in the negotiation,” said Baños. “I hope that we will have news on Thursday, between Thursday and Friday, and that he joins the group on Saturday in Salt Lake City for the friendly against Toluca.”

Berhalter also linked to Sparta Rotterdam

América may be the most prominent club job Berhalter has been publicly linked with, but it’s certainly not the only team on the list.

On Tuesday, Rijnmond Sport reported that Berhalter is one of the final five candidates in consideration to take over at Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam. Sparta has been in the market for a new head coach after former boss Maurice Steijn was hired away by Ajax, a move that was officially announced on Wednesday.

Berhalter played for Sparta early in his career, spending 1996-98 with De Kasteelheren. However, there are some other familiar names said to be in the running, including two former FC Cincinnati head coaches in Jaap Stam and Ron Jans.
