Celtics, Jack’s Abby partner to produce ‘Pride and Parquet’ beer

The Boston Celtics have partnered with Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers to produce “Pride and Parquet” beer, coming to stores near you starting this fall.

Now that you are able to watch live Boston Celtics basketball again with games that count, you will soon be able to drink a Celtics-themed beer to go with it.

The team recently announced a partnership with local brewers Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers to produce “Pride and Parquet” beer, just the third such partnership across the NBA and the first for a New England sports team in one of the four major North American sports.

“[The Celtics] are a legendary institution in New England and the cooperation and enthusiasm of their organization made this a perfect relationship,” related Rob Day, Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers Senior Director of Marketing, in a press release shared by the team.

“We couldn’t be more excited to share in the Celtics story and bring some truly special things to our fans.”

“Pride and Parquet” is planned for release throughout the New England region beginning in late fall to early in the winter as the 2020-21 season kicks off — keep an eye open for it in a package store near you.

David Griffin says Zion Williamson will not play ‘significant minutes’ vs. Clippers

After playing just 15 minutes in Thursday’s loss, Zion Williamson is not expected to play many more minutes in Saturday’s game against the Clippers.

David Griffin didn’t need to wait for a question at his media availability on Friday afternoon. Everyone, himself included, knew what the questions would be about.

The Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations offered a lengthy explanation for Zion Williamson’s seemingly extreme minutes restriction in Thursday’s loss to the Jazz, the first official game to take place in the NBA’s bubble in Orlando, and offered an apology for not explaining the situation before the game.

Williamson played just 15 minutes for the Pelicans, all of those coming in “bursts,” as the team described them, to open each quarter. He made a large impact on the game, scoring 13 points in his limited time. But as his team watched their lead slip away down the stretch, he was left watching from the bench.

Griffin explained the plan the team’s medical staff had devised for every play in order to have each individual player peaking by the start of seeding games. With Williamson missing the better part of two weeks of practice after leaving the bubble to tend to a family emergency, his individual plan was reset, leading to Thursday’s contest when his minutes were strictly limited.

“Unfortunately because of the situation with his family, he was called away and it was a very legitimate reason to leave,” Griffin told reporters on Friday. “But unfortunately, he’s 13 days removed from the group in terms of following that plan after not playing basketball for what amounts to four months. So, I appreciate the fact that everybody wants him to play 40 minutes tomorrow night. I can promise you he’s not going to. No mistakes were made yesterday relative to how this was handled other than by me by not coming forward and just expressing this in the clearest way possible. This isn’t complicated.

“Again, he will not play significant minutes in the next game and he may not in the following game, quite frankly. This is all about the ramp-up time. He didn’t get the benefit of any of the things that his teammates got for those 13 days. Again, this is going to take some time. I think it’s going to take time for him. He mentioned his flow and rhythm and it’s going to take time for him to find that.”

Immediate comparisons were drawn to Williamson’s debut, which also featured a heavy minutes restriction. In that instance, the Pelicans remained particularly cautious with their rookie after a knee surgery delayed his first game on the court by three months.

Griffin was certain to point out, though, that Thursday’s minutes restrictions had nothing to do with Williamson’s injuries in the past year but would be standard protocol for any player on the team that missed nearly two weeks inside the bubble.

“Literally, any player on our roster that went through exactly what he went through would be in the same protocol because they missed all of the ramp-up time,” he said. “This has nothing to do with him being unique in that way. Now obviously, the athlete that he is, the size that he is, the force and torque that he generates changes the nature of the dynamic because it’s him but it doesn’t change that any player would go through this exact same protocol and this return-to-play mechanism.”

Frustrations were aplenty after Thursday’s loss. Williamson admitted his irritation with being forced to sit on the bench and watch his team falter down the stretch. Head coach Alvin Gentry wasn’t as forthright about it but opted to direct any questions regarding Williamson’s minutes to the medical staff after answer his first question on the manner.

On Friday, he was expectedly more relaxed as he explained the process the team goes through to set Williamson’s minutes limits.

“We sit down as a group along with (Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David) Griffin and (Vice President of Player Care & Performance) Aaron (Nelson) and we talk about it as to how it’s going to look as far as him playing,” he said, “and we come to an understanding that this is the best right for him from the standpoint of the bursts he would have and that’s the way we try to play him.”

Suggestions that Williamson’s “bursts” of minutes come at the end of quarters to allow him to close the game were shot down by Griffin, who noted the medical staffs concerns with allowing Williamson to get cold on the bench after pre-game and half-time warmups in lieu of starting the quarters immediately after getting loose.

Thursday’s loss for the Pelicans to 11th in the Western Conference standings, four games back of Memphis in the eighth seed. New Orleans must only reach the ninth seed and be four games back or fewer to force a play-in tournament with the eighth seed.

To do so, though, the Pelicans will likely require production from Williamson in the remaining seven games, further increasing the spotlight on the franchise and shortening the amount of patience likely both inside and outside of the team.

Report: Seahawks to be patient with Jamal Adams contract extension

Sources told ESPN that the Seattle Seahawks will be patient with handing their new trade acquisition Jamal Adams a contract extension.

New Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams is anticipating a sizable contract extension in the wake of his trade from the New York Jets, but the two sides have not worked out a long-term deal yet.

Several sources told ESPN that the Seahawks will refrain from immediately giving Adams an extension because the league’s salary cap may drop with revenue losses stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, which shows no signs of letting up anytime soon.

However, there are also reports that Adams is looking to become the highest-paid safety in the NFL, which means he is demanding to be paid over $14.6 million per year. He has two years remaining on his rookie contract, as the Jets picked up his fifth-year option ahead of the trade.

Despite his reported high asking price, Adams recently stated that he wishes to retire in the Emerald City and was overjoyed when the Seahawks gave him the call. The Seahawks gave up two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and safety Bradley McDougald by trading for Adams, which implies that they want him around for a long time as well.

The Seahawks have other things to think about, such as the option of Jadeveon Clowney returning and contract extensions for players such as Chris Carson and Shaquill Griffin. However, Seattle will have to make a decision on Adams sooner or later and could consider making it their top priority, especially because he wants to be with them for the long-term future.

Dawgs in the NFL: Nick Chubb ranks No. 36 on the NFL 100

Former Georgia star running back Nick Chubb is making his mark on the NFL. He is ranked No. 36 on the annual NFL 100. Details here!

Former Georgia star running back Nick Chubb is the second most prolific rusher in Georgia football history with 4, 769 yards and is now making his name heard with the Cleveland Browns of the NFL.

Chubb was recently rated No. 36 in the annual NFL 100 which ranks the 100 best players in the league. Chubb was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft where he rushed for 996 yards with eight touchdowns in his rookie season.

2019 was a break-out year for the Cedar Town, Georgia native. Chubb rushed for 1494 yards (2nd in NFL) with eight touchdowns, which earned him a 2019 Prow Bowl invitation and the Brown’s offensive MVP.

Additionally , Pro Football Focus (PFF) rated Chubb as the best running back in the NFL over the past two seasons.

“Chubb has been the best rusher in the NFL since being drafted in the second round by the Browns in 2018. He is the only running back with a PFF rushing grade north of 90.0 over that two-year stretch, and he joins Derrick Henry as one of just two running backs to average over 4 yards after contact per attempt on 100 or more carries. You won’t find any negatives on Chubb’s resume in the broken tackle department, either. No matter which way you cut it, bringing this man to the ground is not an easy task.”

Chiefs add DB Juan Thornhill to PUP list

Thornhill will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed safety Juan Thornhill on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list according to the NFL’s official transaction report.

A move to the PUP list means that Thornhill will not be permitted to practice until he’s medically cleared to do so by doctors and athletic training staff in Kansas City. Thornhill suffered a torn ACL during the Chiefs’ Week 17 win against the Los Angeles Chargers. He was sent to the injured reserve list and didn’t participate in the Chiefs’ postseason run after a tremendous rookie season.

Thornhill has spent the offseason rehabbing his injury and looks to be making some progress in his return to action.

Thornhill can participate in Chiefs’ team meetings. He’s allowed to do conditioning and work with the training staff at the team facilities. He just can’t practice with the team while he’s on the PUP list. He can be activated from the PUP list at any time during training camp.

If Thornhill is not activated by the end of training camp, he’ll be transferred to the reserve/PUP list for the regular season. If that happens he won’t be able to practice for the first six weeks to start the season. After six weeks another six-week window begins when he can return to practice. By the end of those six weeks, Kansas City would have to decide to activate him or send him to the injured reserve list.

It was pretty clear that this move was coming after the Chiefs decided to sign Tedric Thompson, who also plays the deep safety position. This decision should allow Thornhill to ease back into things as he comes off of a tough injury. Keep in mind, he’s not even eight months removed from surgery to repair the torn ligament in his knee.

During a dominant rookie campaign in 2019, Thornhill recorded 58 total tackles, three interceptions, including one for a touchdown, and five passes defended and 16 games started. He didn’t give up a single play of 20 or more yards during the entire season.
