And another salary cap move to discuss

Along with those grievances with contracts involving Antonio Brown and Aaron Hernandez, the Patriots found some salary cap space another way last week: reworking the contract of running back Rex Burkhead.

Burkhead will get a $550,000 signing bonus, but his salary will fall from $2.5 million to $1.05 million and his bonuses will decrease from $500,000 to $400,000, as Patriots Wire reports on. That created near another $1 million in additional salary cap space for the Pats. As mentioned before, the Pats had very little cap space this offseason, much to do with Tom Brady skipping town.

In regard to Burkhead, because of the Patriots needing cap space, he was probably on the roster bubble, Patriots Wire says. But with he new deal, he’s more likely to be retained on their roster. Burkhead will compete for snaps behind Sony Michel, the top rushing back in 2019, and James White, the top pass-catching back.
