No. 1 – Joseph Ossai
Position: JACK
Year: Junior
Analysis: Joseph Ossai spent most of the season playing linebacker for Texas, leading the team in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks. When defensive coordinator Todd Orlando was fired after the conclusion of the 2019 season, Craig Naivar took over for the Alamo Bowl against Utah. In the win, Ossai won defensive MVP and built up hype for the 2020 season.
The difference? Ossai switched to the JACK position and primarily rushed the passer. Against the Utes, the sophomore had nine tackles (six for a loss) and three sacks. The Longhorn defense looked re-energized with Ossai causing havoc in the backfield every play.
More of the same is hoped for with Chris Ash now running the defense. Ossai’s five sacks from last season should be matched by the first couple of games of the season. With a breakout season, Ossai will become a star and possibly start to creep up NFL Draft boards.
