Vols swimming and diving have record-breaking weekend

The swimming and diving team was on fire this weekend, setting multiple records and personal bests over the course of the three-day Tennessee Invitational.

On Friday, the team set 50 combined personal bests and set 12 new top 10 times. For the women, Erika Brown and Tess Cieplucha each set nation-leading times in the 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter freestyle and 400 meter individual medley, respectively. On the men’s side, Josh Walsh set the program’s ninth-fastest 200 meter freestyle time in history, with a 1:34.94 mark.

Then on Saturday, the team absolutely peaked as both the men and women set 43 combined personal bests and added six more top 10 times in program history. Erika Brown again made some waves, dropping a 46.15 in the 100 meter freestyle finals, while Nathan Murray won the B final in the 200 meter back with a time of 1:44.06. The No. 2 Lady Vols finished the three-day meet atop the standings with 1,068.5 points, while the No. 8 men’s team finished third with 839.5 points.

Director of Swimming and Diving Matt Kredich had the following to say about his team’s effort.

“There is (sic) two ways to evaluate the meet. One is simply by times and progress made and I certainly think we made progress. The meet indicates that we made progress across the board and I am impressed with the breadth of events, the range of events and the steps forward we took as a team to increase our competitive level.”

Tennessee’s men’s and women divers will compete at the Auburn Diving Invitational December 17-19 before hosting the Tennessee Diving Invitational January 3-5.
