Three things we learned from Texas’ loss to TCU

Tom Herman can take away a lot of things from Saturday’s game against TCU. Here are three things we learned from the Big 12 season opener:

Still no standout receiver

Over the first two games, Joshua Moore seemed as if he was going to stand out as Sam Ehlinger’s main receiver for the season. After slot receiver Jake Smith returned on Saturday, the sophomore was supposed to take that role but came up short in big moments.

Despite his six receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown, Smith had a crucial drop that would have given Texas in an excellent position to take a lead in the third quarter. Instead, the Longhorns had to punt and remain down 23-21.

Going into the Red River Shootout, Ehlinger will still be looking for the reliable receiver Devin Duvernay was last season. Smith is still getting into the swing of things and Moore will be dealing with a knee injury. Tarik Black and Brennan Eagles on the outside are candidates while a plethora of tight ends could step up.
