Three things we learned from Texas’ loss to TCU

Tom Herman can take away a lot of things from Saturday’s game against TCU. Here are three things we learned from the Big 12 season opener:

Mike Yurcich is not relying on the run game enough

Texas was down for most of the game against TCU and began to rely on Sam Ehlinger to make plays. Unfortunately, the senior quarterback did not have his best day and come up big two weeks in a row. Despite that, offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich continued to call Ehlinger’s number rather than handing the ball off.

Going into the season, running back was the Longhorns’ deepest offensive position. Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson, and Bijan Robinson were expected to participate in a running back by committee scheme. Against TCU, Ingram and Johnson only had 11 carries while Robinson missed the game with an injury.

Johnson did deal with a mid-game injury but Yurcich refused to run the ball down the stretch. As a whole, Johnson and Robinson averaged 6.4 yards per carry. Grinding yards on the ground were working for the Longhorns. Yurcich needs to put the ball in the hands of Ingram, Johnson, and Robinson more often against Oklahoma.
