Three Longhorns projected in first round of latest NFL mock draft

A trio of Longhorns could hear their name called on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL draft.

We’re less than a month away from the 2024 NFL draft.

It will be an exciting three-day event for Texas fans as numerous players are expected to be selected. It’s a significant change from a couple years ago where no Longhorns heard their name called in the 2022 NFL draft.

Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy is widely viewed as Texas’ top draft prospect. His potential landing spots have varied in the first round, but most NFL mock drafts believe he will be selected in the middle of Day 1.

In Eric Edholm’s latest NFL mock draft, Murphy is projected to the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 18 overall pick.

I thought long and hard here about an offensive tackle (even with Trent Brown in tow), but the DT class is much thinner — and Murphy is one of the 15 best prospects in this class, I believe. Much like last year’s selection of DE Myles Murphy (no relation), the Bengals could take his DT namesake with both the short and long term in mind.

Edholm projects two other Longhorns to be taken off the board later in the first round. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is mocked to the Buffalo Bills at No. 28 and wide receiver Xavier Worthy is projected to the Carolina Panthers at No. 29.

The 2024 NFL draft will begin on Thursday, April 25 in Detroit.
