Texas left tackle Samuel Cosmi played in his final collegiate game on Nov. 27 against Iowa State.
Although Cosmi has a year left of eligibility, he was honored as a senior prior to Texas facing Iowa State. He’s highly regarded as one of the top offensive lineman in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.
After the Cyclones defeated the Longhorns in heartbreaking fashion, Texas’ hope for a berth to the Big 12 championship game quickly diminished. Now that Texas doesn’t have much to play for, Cosmi doesn’t want to chance injury in the final two regular season games and instead prepare for the professional level.
According to Anwar Richardson of Rivals.com, Cosmi has officially decided to opt out for the remainder of the season. This includes the final two games at Kansas and Kansas State along with the bowl game.

This may be the first domino to fall in terms of the Longhorns closing the book on this season. Could Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai be next? Sam Ehlinger? It’s not as likely for those two to opt out considering they could use these two games to improve their draft stock, but it’s still a possibility.
If Cosmi is in fact taken off of the board in the first round, he will become the first offensive player from Texas selected in the opening round since 2006 and the first offensive lineman since 2002.
