Longhorns Wire will be publishing their choices for team of the century by each position group.
While some position groups may present tough choices, the quarterbacks are not one of them. In essence, it’s really just deciding between two valid options.
Since 2000, there have been two talented quarterbacks play at the University of Texas. Vince Young won a National Championship in one of the greatest games ever played, while Colt McCoy became one of the winningest quarterbacks in college football history. One did most of his damage on the ground, while the other was extremely successful in the air.
In each position group, we will select a starter and backup.
Starting Quarterback: Vince Young
- 6,040 passing yards
- 44 passing touchdowns
- 3,127 rush yards
- 37 rushing touchdowns
- 37 games played, 32 games started
It’s almost as if you have to put him here considering what he’s accomplished. Young single-handedly took over games with his talent alone. If he were to return for another season rather than declaring for the NFL Draft, it’s likely he would have won another National Championship. Not only was his talent off the charts as one of the highest-rated recruits ever, he brought Texas back into relevancy.
Backup Quarterback: Colt McCoy
- 13,253 passing yards
- 112 passing touchdowns
- 132 total touchdowns
- 1,571 rush yards
- 53 career starts
Some may think this was an easy choice, but it wasn’t. McCoy presents a valid argument to be considered the starter. What does he not hold the record for in Texas history books is the real question. He is the leader in total wins, completions, attempts, touchdown passes, passing yards, total offense, touchdowns responsible for, passer rating, and completion percentage. Phew. Are we sure he’s the backup here?
