USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg recently dissected the preseason Amway Coaches Poll to determine the five most overrated college football teams.
Texas was listed at No. 14 overall in the poll, but are still considered one of the five most overrated teams. It appears the new hirings of Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash is what presents the most question marks heading into this upcoming season.
“Texas is hoping new coordinators on both sides of the ball sparks a leap back into national contention. While the names are impressive — Mike Yurcich on offense and Chris Ash on defense — there is no team in recent history that pulled off a similar two-coordinator change and saw any drastic change in fortune. For Texas, the elimination of the non-conference game against LSU is one fewer opportunity to impress.”
Not being able to compete against LSU certainly isn’t in Texas’ favor. They had a legitimate chance to travel to Death Valley to defeat one of the top teams in the country. What better opportunity to prove yourself than that?
The Longhorns in-state rival, Texas A&M, was also considered an overrated team alongside Auburn, Minnesota, and Utah. Texas has enough talent and experience on both sides of the ball to deserve a top 15 ranking. If the revamped coaching staff works out in their favor, there’s no reason that they shouldn’t compete for the Big 12 title.
Now that the schedule presents a conference-only format, the Longhorns toughest challenges will come from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State.
