Texas generates more revenue from athletics than any other school

If the Longhorns can find a way to succeed on the football field, these numbers will continue to rise.

Whether Texas is producing on the field or not, they’re certainly succeeding off of it.

USA TODAY Sports released the NCAA Division I public schools database for athletics revenue. The Longhorns continue to hold the No. 1 overall spot on the list with $223,879,781 in total revenue.

The next Big 12 program on the list is Oklahoma at No. 8 overall with $163,126,695. Other than Texas and Oklahoma, the conference does not have a school within the top 25.

Well-respected programs on the field such as Ohio State, Georgia, and Alabama appear in the top 10 overall. However, the Buckeyes had a higher number of expenses than total revenue.

Texas’ in-state rival Texas A&M is listed just behind the Longhorns with $212,748,002 in total revenue, reiterating that football is king in the state of Texas. With Austin specifically, it’s the only primary sporting team to cheer for or witness in person. The Longhorns also have one of the most recognizable logos across all major sports.

Even if the University of Texas were to eliminate all sports outside of football, it would still be one of the nation’s most lucrative athletics departments. The Longhorns have generated revenues that have exceeded their expenses every year since 2005.

The brand will always be strong, but success on the field could continue to bring in record-setting numbers.
