Penn State makes early favorites list for four-star wide receiver in 2024

A speedy receiver on Penn State’s radar for 2024 updated his early top schools list. Where PSU sits now.

Penn State is in hot pursuit of some star power at the wide receiver position on the recruiting trail, and one four-star target has included the Nittany Lions in his latest recruiting update. [autotag]Zion Ragins[/autotag], a four-star receiver from Georgia, revealed his top 12 schools this week, and Penn State remains on his radar in the Class of 2024.

Hayes Fawcett of On3 reported, via Twitter, that Ragins had trimmed his massive recruiting list down to 12 schools, meaning Ragins still has a considerable way to go before making his ultimate commitment decision for the current recruiting cycle. And it appears Penn State will continue to be in some heavy competition for his commitment.

In addition to Penn State, the other 11 schools on Ragins’ top 12 list were Auburn, Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Western Kentucky.

There are no crystal ball predictions on the record on 247Sports at this time, but the On3 recruiting prediction tool does suggest Penn State is behind the pack at the moment. On3’s metric calculates a 1.4% chance of securing a commitment from Ragins. South Carolina is the favorite at the moment with a 24.4% chance of receiving the commitment. That could be about to change though as the second and third schools on the On3 prediction machine, Florida and Ole Miss, have supposedly been eliminated from contention.

Ragins is a consensus four-star recruit in the Class of 2024 with four-star ratings from 247Sports, On3, Rivals, and ESPN. 247Sports and ESPN each rank Ragins as a top-10 wide receiver in the Class of 2024 as well., and all but On3 rank Ragins in their top 71 players in the nation (On3 has Ragins ranked 207th).

Ragins caught 38 passes for 584 yards and four touchdowns last season for Jones County High School in Gray, GA. The 5′-9″ speedster is also a track star in high school.

Oklahoma Sooners make top 12 for 2024 4-Star WR Zion Ragins

The Oklahoma Sooners make the top 12 for a speedster out of Georgia, four-star wide receiver Zion Ragins

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the running for one of the fastest players in the 2024 recruiting class. Four-star wide receiver Zion Ragins trimmed his interest list to 12 teams, which included Oklahoma.

After landing [autotag]Jaquize Pettaway[/autotag] in the 2023 cycle, the Sooners hope to double down with another speedster in Ragins.

Oklahoma is joined in the top 12 by several Power Five schools, including Georgia, Tennessee, Penn State, Notre Dame, Colorado, Miami, South Carolina, Auburn, and Florida State.

Ragins looks a lot like Percy Harvin, the former Florida Gators‘ star. He can do it all. He plays out of the backfield as a running back and will split wide as a receiver. He’s equally adept at running out of the backfield as he is after the catch as a wide receiver.

His speed pops off the screen as he runs by and runs away from opposing defenses. According to 247Sports, he ran a 10.47 100-meter dash for Jones County High School. In addition to his elite speed, he also shows off fantastic athleticism with his ability to make people miss.

It will be a difficult road to land Ragins’ commitment, but Jeff Lebby’s offense provides a great fit to utilize Ragins’ speed and athleticism.

Every wide receiver offered by the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2024 recruiting cycle

Who are the Oklahoma Sooners targeting at wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting cycle?

The wide receiver position at Oklahoma has provided some fantastic production over the years. Big-name players like Sterling Shepard, CeeDee Lamb, and Marquise Brown are still having success at the NFL level.

Marvin Mims is the latest player to breakout, recording the first 1,000-yard season of his career in 2022. Jalil Farooq didn’t have as big a season as Mims, but he became an integral part of the offense in both the pass and run games.

In the 2022 recruiting cycle, the Oklahoma Sooners signed two four-star talents like the towering Jayden Gibson and Nic Anderson. In 2023, Oklahoma added four-star prospects Jaquaize Pettaway and Keyon Brown to the wide receiver depth chart.

The Oklahoma Sooners will look to build off of the depth they’ve already created by adding to the talent in the 2024 recruiting class. They’ve already received predictions to land four-star speedster Mario Craver out of Alabama.

Though we’re still a long way from the 2024 early signing period, here are the wide receivers they’ve targeted thus far in the cycle.
