Michigan State added an out-of-state running back to its 2025 class on Wednesday with Zion Gist signing with the Spartans.

Gist is a three-star prospect who hails from Frankfort, Illinois. Gist officially signed to become a Spartan during National Signing Day on Wednesday.

Gist ranks as the No. 138 running back in 247Sports’ rankings for the 2025 class. He’s also listed as the No. 57 player from Illinois in the class.

Gist was originally committed to Western Michigan before flipping to Michigan State last week. He also held offers from Marshall, Kent State and Northern Iowa.

Michigan State successfully flips 3-star RB Zion Gist from Western Michigan

Back in June, 3-star running back Zion Gist committed to Western Michigan. However, the Spartans hosted Gist for an official visit this weekend for the Purdue game, and he must have liked what he saw, because on Monday, Gist flipped his committed from Western Michigan to Michigan State football.

Gist is the No. 141 ranked running back in the 2025 class by 247Sports and their No. 58 ranked player in the state of Illinois.

For those who may be sneering at MSU flipping a Western Michigan player, remember, one of MSU’s best players of this decade was originally from the Broncos.

2025 WMU RB commit to officially visit Michigan State football

MSU will be hosting a running back committed to Western Michigan on an official visit this weekend

Michigan State football is set to host Miami (OH) commit Cairo Skanes on an official visit this weekend, and now, the Spartans will be adding another MAC commit to the visitor list.

Zion Gist, a running back committed to Western Michigan will also be making an official visit to Michigan State. Gist has been committed to the Broncos since June 1.

Gist is a 6-foot, 200 pound running back that is a 3-star prospect with offers from Kent State, Marshall and WMU.

The Spartans have yet to formally offer the prospect, but that may be on the way when he arrives in East Lansing.
