Cam Whitmore, Rockets host basketball clinic to benefit local YMCA

With assistance from the Rockets, Cam Whitmore partnered with Wilson Sporting Goods to present the Harriet & Joe Foster Family YMCA with a donation check and a basketball clinic.

With assistance from the Rockets, rookie forward Cam Whitmore partnered with Wilson Sporting Goods to present Houston’s Harriet & Joe Foster Family YMCA with a donation check and to conduct a basketball clinic for its members on Tuesday evening.

Earlier this summer, Wilson jointly announced a campaign with three rookies: Whitmore, Jett Howard of the Orlando Magic and Jalen Wilson of the Brooklyn Nets. The program’s mission was to increase basketball-playing access at a YMCA in each team’s market.

Each player was able to increase Wilson’s donation amount through their play at the NBA’s 2023 summer league in Las Vegas. Whitmore, who was named MVP of summer league, doubled Wilson’s donation amount through his strong performance in July.

Wilson’s summer league program is part of a multiyear national partnership with YMCA of the USA, a leading nonprofit organization. Over the past three years, the group has provided $1.5 million in funding to enable equity and access to sport for underserved youth.

Here’s our behind-the-scenes look at activities organized by Whitmore and the Rockets on Tuesday evening.

GEHA and the Hunt Family Foundation have joined forces to honor #Chiefs RB Joe Delaney’s memory ahead of the 40th anniversary of his death.

GEHA and The Hunt Family Foundation announced this week that they will jointly fund swimming lessons for children in Haughton, Louisiana — the hometown of Kansas City Chiefs RB Joe Delaney.

June 29 will mark 40 years since Delaney sacrificed his life in an attempt to save three children from drowning. In remembrance of Delaney, each GEHA and the Hunt Family Foundation will give $5,000 to the Delaney 37 Foundation, which was founded by Delaney’s family members to provide mentorship and education, including programs for water safety, financial literacy and leadership for the children in and around Haughton.

According to the press release, the funds from GEHA and the Hunt Family Foundation will be used to provide swimming lessons and aquatic safety programs to Haughton and the surrounding communities in Louisiana.

“If my dad saw a need, he was going to step in and help,” said Joanna Noel, youngest daughter of Joe Delaney and Delaney 37 Foundation leader. “My father would be proud of the work that is being done in his name by GEHA and The Hunt Family Foundation to make swimming safer for many families.”

This will effectively act as an extension of the Joe Delaney Learn to Swim Program, presented by GEHA, which launched with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City last year. The support from both GEHA and the Hunt Family Foundation allowed 650 additional students to receive swimming lessons and equipment at five Kansas City metro YMCA locations.

“The work that the Joe Delaney Learn to Swim Program, presented by GEHA, has done in our community to address water safety and access is truly inspiring,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “To be able to work alongside our partners at GEHA, as well as Joe’s family, to launch the program with the Delaney 37 Foundation in his hometown and the surrounding areas speaks to the commitment of GEHA and the Hunt Family Foundation and further honors Joe’s heroic actions.”

Watch Charles Barkley gleefully dance to ‘YMCA’ during Duke – North Carolina

It’s fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A!

Charles Barkley is no stranger to having a good time.

The big man is often pulling all kinds of practical jokes (while being a victim of some of them, too) with his pals, Shaq and Kenny Smith, on Inside the NBA. Barkley definitely has thick skin, and he definitely has a wonderful sense of humor.

A couple of weeks ago, we saw the Hall of Famer-turned-famous-analyst dancing while his alma mater, Auburn, advanced in the Men’s NCAA Tournament. As Duke (four and a half-point favorites coming in) took on North Carolina in the Final Four, Barkley started jamming out to the Village People’s “YMCA.”

It’s fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A. It’s fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

Oh, sorry. It’s a fun song!

Anyway, Barkley clearly likes to have and clearly doesn’t care who he’s watching. I can’t and won’t argue with that happiness.

Kyle Kuzma working with Flint YMCA to provide kids meals during coronavirus

Los Angeles Lakers forward and Flint, Michigan Native Kyle Kuzma is trying to help his hometown in a time of crisis.

As the rest of the world grapples with the fallout of a global pandemic and hospitals in the United States are starting to run low on crucial supplies, one member of the Los Angeles Lakers is doing what he can to help kids in his hometown of Flint, Michigan.

Starting early next week for at least the following six weeks, Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma has partnered with the local YMCA to provide approximately 550 meals per week for kids, according to The Athletic’s Bill Oram. The program will include a nightly dinner and a snack for kids. It isn’t the first time that Kuzma has tried to give back to his hometown of Flint.

This past summer, Kuzma partnered with LeBron James’ sports media company UNINTERRUPTED to provide a free basketball camp for kids that also included a year-long membership to the Flint YMCA. Meanwhile, James and his LeBron James Family Foundation are working to keep supporting the families who depend on non-academic programs from his I Promise Public School in Akron, Ohio.
