Around the NFL: Chiefs outlast Ravens 27-20 in season opener

Football is officially BACK! Man, does it feel great to say/read that or what!? On Thursday night, the two-time defending champions Kansas City Chiefs kicked off the 2024 NFL season with a home game against the Baltimore Ravens. For both teams, they began the 2024 campaign exactly how they left 2023: the Chiefs prevailed in a thriller, and the Ravens suffered another one-score loss to Kansas City, as Baltimore fell 27-20 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Once more, the Ravens could not overcome their primary rivals in the AFC. Last season, Baltimore’s year came to an end with a 17-10 home loss in the conference championship to the Chiefs. Despite the Ravens pitching a second half shutout (thanks to Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, the then-defensive coordinator) reigning MVP Lamar Jackson could not muster enough offense to dethrone Kansas City.

Ultimately, this was stil the case, despite both teams scoring 10 points more, each. The only difference here is the Ravens defense was able to get one last stop while the Chiefs were trying to ice the game, which gave Jackson a final chance to tie the game. An opportunity he very nearly completed, as Jackson got Baltimore’s offense to the Kansas City 10-yard line, thanks to a 38-yard pass to wide receiver Rashod Bateman with less than a minute left to play.

But that was all she wrote, as Jackson missed open receivers on first and second down which would have given the Ravens a touchdown. With five seconds left, Jackson found tight end Isaiah Likely for what was initially called a touchdown! Until it was overturned due to the most unfortunate out of bounds call we’ve seen in a while.

It’s a game of inches.

The heartbreaking ending for Baltimore spoiled an otherwise spectacular night from both Jackson and Likely. Jackson completed 26-of-41 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown, as well as leading the Ravens on the ground with 16 rushes for 122 yards. Likely hauled in nine receeptions for 111 yards and a score.

Of course, it’s hard to overcome Kansas City when Patrick Mahomes is on the other sideline. Mahomes was a crisp 20-of-28 for 291 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception from being hit while throwing. The breakout star of the night was rookie Xavier Worthy from Texas, who scored his first touchdown on his very first play, rushing 21 yards for a touchdown. Worthy also hauled in a 35-yard score to give the Chiefs a 27-17 lead.

As it stands, the Seahawks are not scheduled to face either of these teams in 2024. Of course, theoretically, they could always meet in New Orleans on Feburary 9th, 2025.

First-rounder Xavier Worthy comes up big in Chiefs rookie debut

First-rounder WR Xavier Worthy comes up big in Chiefs rookie debut with huge plays key to Kansas City’s win over Baltimore

It was an intense and down-to-the-wire opening game to kick off the NFL season. As promised, two of the best teams in the AFC with the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens brought their A-game to an early season tilt that provided plenty of excitement on a Thursday night. One player who made a name for himself in a big way was the Chiefs rookie first-round receiver Xavier Worthy.

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1831861336348983419

The most explosive player in the 2024 NFL draft class, Worthy sure made sure to display his speed,  given two of his three touches went for big-time touchdowns that ultimately won Kansas City the game. The first score showed Worthy’s agility and the benefits of his smaller frame as he burst through a hole on a sneaky reversal. The second touchdown showed off the raw speed that Worth possesses, blowing past a confused Ravens secondary for an easy score.

This game put the rest of the league on notice for the Chiefs’ new speedster. It’s likely the AFC West is seeing flashes of games past of Mahomes dialing up deep to future Hall of Famer Tyreek Hill. The Kansas City offense looks as dangerous as ever, and head coach Andy Reid is sure to dial up plays for his new offensive toy all season long.

Xavier Worthy blows by Ravens defense for second NFL touchdown

#Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy scored his second touchdown of the night against the #Ravens on this outstanding play in the fourth quarter.

The Kansas City Chiefs wasted no time giving rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy scoring opportunities in their first regular season game.

After two scoreless drives, quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs’ offense down the field early in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game.

Mahomes utilized the Chiefs’ depth on offense to spread the ball to his playmakers and took a hard hit on the sideline before finding speedster Worthy for the receiver’s second touchdown of the game.

Take a look at this video of Worthy’s 35-yard touchdown, which was posted by the Chiefs on Twitter:

The Chiefs had high expectations of the former Texas Longhorn after he ran the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL Combine history, and the team is putting his skills to good use against Baltimore.

Thursday’s performance by Worthy should give Chiefs fans confidence that the rookie can be a productive member of head coach Andy Reid’s offense.

Just what the NFL didn’t need: Patrick Mahomes having another wide receiver target.

Xavier Worthy is fleet. His feet gave the Chiefs a touchdown in the first half. on a 21-yard run.

The 28th pick in the first round scored on a 21-yard run.

The Ravens closed within 20-17 in the fourth quarter and had to kick off to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

The great quarterback found his speedy receiver, who made it to the end zone on the 35-yard touchdown play.

Kansas City led 27-17 and it was Baltimore’s turn to try and counter.

Patrick Mahomes classily made sure Xavier Worthy got his first touchdown football during Ravens-Chiefs

A classy guy, that Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s first carry of his career went for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night at home, making it a memory we’re sure he’ll never forget.

However, his Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes made sure he had his first touchdown ball to remember it by, too.

Right after Worthy ran it into the end zone for a touchdown, Mahomes made his way to the staffer on the sideline who had the touchdown football and retrieved it to give to Worthy on the sideline.

What a classy move by the elite quarterback to make sure his teammate has such a valuable keepsake for his rookie season.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy burns Ravens for long touchdown in regular season debut

#Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy burned the #Ravens defense for a long touchdown in his regular season debut at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs got rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy involved early in their Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens and got exactly the result they were hoping for.

After surrendering an early lead to Baltimore on the game’s opening drive, reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes marched Kansas City’s offense downfield on the Chiefs’ first possession.

He relied on Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco to get his unit into gear, and when Worthy was called on to take a carry on an end around later in the drive, the rookie wasted no time finding a seam to get into the endzone.

Check out this video of Worthy’s touchdown, which was posted to Twitter by the NFL’s official account:

Worthy ran the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL combine history earlier this year, and flashed his explosive potential on this outstanding play.

Expect to see him continue to dominate as the Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup against the Ravens continues.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to kick off the NFL’s 2024 regular season with a Thursday night matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, their first meeting since a dramatic 17-10 win in the AFC Championship game in January.

This game marks the start of Kansas City’s attempt to complete the NFL’s first-ever three-peat and promises to be among the best matchups on the league’s Week 1 schedule.

With veteran wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown out in Thursday’s game, the reigning Super Bowl champs will need to turn to receivers Xavier Worthy and JuJu Smith-Schuster to compete with the Ravens’ high-powered offense.

Fantasy Football: 5 sleeper wide receivers for 2024 NFL season

These sleeper wide receivers could help you win your fantasy football league.

The 2024 NFL season will kick off this week when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. The return of the NFL’s regular season also marks the return of fantasy football.

Ahead of Thursday’s opener, we’ve put together a quick list of sleeper wide receivers for the 2024 season. Sleepers, for our purposes, are players we believe will finish higher than their average draft position (ADP) this fall. They’re not necessarily unknown players, but they are being undervalued by fantasy managers this offseason.

1. WR Cooper Kupp (ADP 34): It feels insane to list Kupp among “sleepers,” but he’s being drafted much later than his ceiling due to last season’s injuries. If he stays healthy — even with Puka Nacua added to the mix — Kupp should finish much higher than his WR17 ADP this season.

2. WR Malik Nabers (ADP 45): Marvin Harrison Jr.’s hype is through the roof, understandably so. But MHJR is being drafted as WR9 while Nabers is going off the board as WR24. MHJR should obviously be ranked higher than Nabers, but the sixth overall pick is also headed for a big year.

3. WR Rashee Rice (ADP 65): Eventually, Rice could face discipline from the NFL, but he’s set to play in the season opener and he’s a top receiver in KC’s high-flying offense. Landing him as WR30 could be a steal.

4. WR Xavier Worthy (ADP 82): Two Chiefs receivers make the list as Patrick Mahomes looks to have a bounce-back season. Worthy isn’t “the next Tyreek Hill,” but his speed could make him a great value as WR37 this fall.

5. WR Ladd McConkey (ADP 97): The Chargers lost Keenan Allen and Mike Williams this offseason, and Quentin Johnston has struggled to make an impact. That could leave McConkey as a PPR gem playing in the slot. He’s going off the board as WR42.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy

Analyzing Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy’s 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy appears to have earned favor in the organization, and the rookie 1st-round pick could be a top option right out of the gate for the defending Super Bowl champs. Worthy was taken with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after a breakout season with the Texas Longhorns, rushing for 1,014 yards in 14 games. Below, we look at Xavier Worthy’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Worthy is expected to be among the top-5 options for one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. The wideout will be intriguing in terms of fantasy value as most aren’t overly sure what to expect from him.

Xavier Worthy’s ADP: 78.07

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Worthy’s 78.07 ADP in redraft leagues places him in the range of the 7th to 10th round depending on the size of the league. His ADP is the 5th-best on the Chiefs. RB Isiah Pacheco (22.54) is No. 1, followed by QB Patrick Mahomes (26.33), TE Travis Kelce (28.98) and WR Rashee Rice (62.25).

Among all wide receivers, Worthy’s ADP puts him 37th at the position. He’s behind Tennessee’s Calvin Ridley (76.74), Jacksonville’s Christian Kirk (75.79) and Buffalo’s Keon Coleman (73.94), while he’s ahead of the Green Bay duo of Jayden Reed (83.95) and Christian Watson (83.97), Carolina’s Diontae Johnson (85.00) and Chicago rookie Rome Odunze (85.30),

Where should you draft Worthy?

Worthy is going to have fantasy value this season, but how much is the question? He has looked good in training camp and in the preseason, but there are only so many mouths to feed despite the Chiefs having one of the most consistent offenses in the NFL.

The Chiefs had decent depth at receiver last season and only 2 players (Kelce and Rice) topped 500 receiving yards. Worthy sits 3rd on the depth chart, and he’s being taken here for his potential to climb that later, but his competition will be stiff.

Dynasty and keeper leagues are why Worthy’s ADP is so high. Taking him over a consistent weapon like Ridley doesn’t seem like a smart move, especially given the competition Worthy will face for targets with all 3 K.C. receivers battling arguably the league’s best tight end.

Worthy has the speed to make a few stellar grabs, but he may ultimately be a low-volume player. Draft Worthy lower than his ADP and feel free to let him drop. He’ll have more value in standard leagues as he’s not likely to be a target machine for the Chiefs. Take Worthy soundly in the 8th round of a PPR league.

JuJu Smith-Schuster on his role with the Chiefs: ‘Coming in to be a leader in that room’

JuJu Smith-Schuster on his role with the Kansas City #Chiefs: ‘Coming in to be a leader in that room’ | @EdEastonJr

The start of the regular season is a week away, and the Kansas City Chiefs have trimmed their roster to 53 players. A few deals were made before the deadline, including signing veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Smith-Schuster spoke with reporters on Tuesday after practice about his new role with the Chiefs as he begins his second tenure.

“You got speed down the field (and) great hands. Last year, me watching Rashee Rice – his kind of position I played the year I was here,” said Smith-Schuster. “It was very cool to see how those guys used him in that way (and) in that form—being able to just see that and coming in to be a leader in that room – being a vet in the room. Just being able to help those young guys out.”

Smith-Schuster is only 27 years old, but he still fully embraces the mentorship role for the younger receivers. Entering his 8th season, he’s already experienced the highs and lows of the league while still competing at a high level.

“Yesterday (Monday) was my first practice, and being able to see (Xavier) Worthy run was pretty impressive,” said Smith-Schuster. “He was just like floating across the field. It’s pretty cool that (we have) a guy like him who can open up the offense.”

The 2017 second-round pick can play multiple roles in the offense, making him valuable for the Chiefs to pick up well after training camp. His instant chemistry with Mahomes and mastery of head coach Andy Reid’s playbook are all essential in the talented receivers’ room.
