Ducks rally late to advance past Xavier in Nashville Regional

Three straight doubles in the seventh inning was just enough to propel the Ducks past Xavier 5-4 in Nashville Regional.

Using six pitchers and relying on your bullpen for seven innings isn’t the normal game plan in baseball.

But Game 1 in the Nashville Regional went exactly how Mark Wasikowski envisioned. Two runs in the bottom of the seventh also helped.

Oregon was able to win its first NCAA tournament game with a 5-4 victory over Xavier. The Ducks will now await the winner of the Vanderbilt-Eastern Illinois contest to see who they play Saturday at 3 pm PST.

Ironically, these two teams met in the first weekend series of the season with the Ducks sweeping the Musketeers. Those games went just about how this went, which was a nail-biter until the very end.

The Ducks went the “Johnny Whole Staff” method here in the opener with Logan Mercado starting and relievers Grayson Grinsell, Dylan McShane, Austin Anderson, Matt Dallas, and closer Josh Mollerus shutting down the Musketeers.

Although they walked six batters with four of them scoring, the Ducks locked it down for the last five innings with just one hit and no walks.

Xavier wasted an outstanding start from its pitcher, Brant Alazaus. The left-hander had the Duck batters off-balance all day long with his 82-mile-an-hour fastball and low-70s breaking ball.

After the Musketeers scored two in the first, the Ducks answered quickly with two of their own. Oregon took a brief 3-2 lead with Xavier taking the lead back in the next half-inning, but then it was zeros put up for four straight innings.

With nine outs left, the Ducks’ offense finally went to work in the seventh. Rikuu Nishida hit a one-out double to get the rally started. Alazaus was over the 100-pitch mark and Xavier felt that was enough. Fortunately for Oregon, it was a decision that went its way.

Jonathan Kelly came in and promptly gave up two more doubles to Colby Shade and Drew Cowley to give Oregon the 5-4 lead.

Dallas pitched a perfect eighth and Mollerus gave up a single before coaxing Matthew Deprey into a double play to end the game.

Oregon Ducks Regional Preview: Xavier Musketeers

Xavier has rebounded nicely after a slow start to its baseball season to earn the 3-seed of the Nashville Regional.

On Feb. 23, being in a regional, any regional, would have seemed far-fetched for the Xavier Musketeers baseball team.

The team sat at 0-5 after a four-game sweep at Oregon and a loss at Lousiville. After that, the Musketeers went a robust 37-18 for the season to earn a 3-seed for the regional.

The Musketeers finished second in the Big East with a 14-7 conference record and had to beat regular-season champion UConn three times to win the conference tournament.

Like the Ducks, Xavier doesn’t exactly play station-to-station baseball. It likes to hit the ball a long way and the Musketeers will be looking to do just that in Nashville.

As a team, Xavier has hit 88 home runs this year. In comparison, Oregon has hit one more homer for a program record of 89. But the Ducks do put the ball in play more often. The Ducks have a team batting average of an even .300, while the Musketeers come in hitting .278.

Matthew Deprey and Jared Cushing both lead Xavier with 14 homers a piece. Both are also hitting .286 for the season. Their leading hitter is Andrew Walker with a .329 average, seven home runs and he leads the team with 53 runs batted in.

Xavier has used a weekend rotation of Ethan Bosacker, Brent Alazaus and Luke Hoskins. Odds are the Musketeers will go with Bosacker to go against the Ducks with his 7-4 record and 3.83 earned run average. He started on opening day and was outstanding at PK Park. Bosacker went seven innings, giving up just one run on a grand total of two hits and he struck out six.

Oregon and Xavier will begin the Nashville Regional at 10 am PST on ESPN+.

Xavier junior Colby Jones explains what he brings to the NBA

Jones was named to the All-Big East second team last season after averaging 15 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.3 steals.

Xavier junior Colby Jones emerged this past season as a great floor general, and it is that ability the potential first-round pick is looking to bring to the next level.

Jones, who was named to the All-Big East second team, averaged 15 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.3 steals on 37.8% shooting from 3-point range. He ranked sixth in the conference in assists and third in minutes (1,223).

The 6-foot-6 guard dazzled at times with his vision and passing ability. He flourished as a scorer that can create for himself and others, and he should be able to step in and play right away.

He discussed what he can offer teams in the NBA.

I would say just being a connector on offense and my motor and my hustle. I feel like I make a lot of hustle plays and I feel like that translates regardless of where you play. Then, just being able to guard on defense and being a team defensive player.

Jones produced nine 20-point games and recorded a massive jump in 3-point shooting after converting just 29.2% as a sophomore. He is one of the more experienced players projected to be taken in the first round, and teams should love his maturity and unselfishness.

He was among the prospects that participated in the on-court testing and measurements at the draft combine last week in Chicago, Illinois. He just attended his first pre-draft workout with Portland on Monday and has Brooklyn on the schedule.

The NBA draft will take place on June 22.

Second half flurry keeps Xavier’s March Madness run alive

Jack Nunge, Souley Boum save Xavier’s season, for now.

The college basketball world had its eyes on the No. 3 Xavier and No. 14 Kennesaw State matchup on Friday. We already saw No. 2 Arizona and No. 4 Virginia fall on day one of the tournament.

Heading into the second half, the higher-seeded Xavier Musketeers found themselves in a hole, 43-36. With 9:56 remaining in the game, the Owls held a 61-48 lead. That is when the wheels came off for this Cinderella story.

It would be seven-plus minutes without a made field goal for Kennesaw State. It allowed Xavier to make a run to re-take the lead at 62-61 with 4:47 remaining on a Jack Nunge free-throw attempt.

This one would come down to the wire as Xavier clung to a 68-67 lead with just 18 seconds remaining. A Nunge block with two seconds left would all but seal it for the Musketeers as they would survive. Souley Boum would make four straight free throw shots to give them the win, 72-67.

Xavier awaits the winner of Iowa State and Pittsburgh on Sunday in the Round of 32.

Breaking down Florida’s grinding loss to Xavier on Thanksgiving

Here’s a look at how Florida’s loss to Xavier went down in the opener of the Phil Knight Legacy.

Florida basketball opened up the Phil Night Legacy in Portland, Oregon, on Thanksgiving Day with a loss to the Xavier Musketeers by a final score of 90-83. The matchup between a Southeastern Conference school and a Big East representative did not go quite how Gators fans would have liked after having stuffed themselves with dinner on this evening.

[autotag]Tre Bonham[/autotag]’s 23 points led the way while [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] followed with 18 and [autotag]Riley Kugel[/autotag] with 12 to round out the Gators in double digits; Richard also paced the squad with three steals and [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag] maxed out the assists with six. [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] sat this one out due to a coach’s decision that was not elaborated upon.

The biggest story was [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag]’s general ineffectiveness on offense throughout the game, scoring just 11 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking four shots. That is a rather modest double-double given his 5-for-14 effort from the field as well as going just 1-for-2 from the free-throw line in 32 minutes played.

Take a look below at a chronological breakdown of the game action as Florida’s second loss of the season unfurled.

How to Watch: Florida basketball vs Xavier Musketeers in Phil Knight Legacy

Here’s how to watch this afternoon’s Florida-Xavier action in the Phil Knight Legacy tournament.

Florida basketball takes a trip out to the west coast to face the Xavier Musketeers in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, Nov. 24, for the Phil Knight Legacy tournament, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the Thanksgiving action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The holiday affair that pits a member of the Southeastern Conference against a Big East opponent on a neutral court is sure to be a good one. The Gators were triumphant in their last game against the Florida State Seminoles, coming back from a deep deficit to prevail by double digits on the road in Tallahassee. However, the Musketeers also enter the matchup with an equal 3-1 mark so far and pose a formidable threat to [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s team.

Florida and Xavier have faced each other five times prior since 1959, with the Musketeers holding a slim 3-2 lead in the all-time series. They won the first two meetings before the Gators took the next two, but bounced back to take the most recent faceoff in the NIT last March by a whopping final score of 72-56.

Florida basketball opens up Phil Knight Legacy Tournament against Xavier

It’s revenge time for the Gators against the team that knocked them out of the NIT last season. Will Florida beat Xavier this time around?

After a 3-1 start to the Golden era at the University of Florida, the Gators men’s basketball team is headed out West for a major test in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament. UF will face the Xavier Musketeers in the opening round, giving fans a rematch of last year’s Round 2 NIT matchup.

Florida lost that game to end a disappointing season, which makes this a revenge game for returning players like [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag], [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] and [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag]. Castleton, in particular, is a player to watch for as he was limited to just 10 points and six boards against Xavier the last time out. He’s been on an absolute tear so far this season, averaging 25.3 points per game and 8.8 rebounds through the Gators’ first four contests.

It’s worth noting that Reeves lead Florida in scoring the last time these two teams met up. He has struggled to find his stroke early on in Todd Golden’s system, but this could be the breakout game he needs.

One of the reasons Castleton may not be as effective as he’s been all year is Xavier’s starting center Jack Nunge, who is listed as a 7-footer. Castleton struggled to dominate the paint in the first half against Florida State, but he carried the team in the second half to a victory. Adjustments will have to be made to overcome Xavier’s size, but Castleton’s a much different player than he was during last season’s NIT run.

If the Gators can win in the first round of this tournament, a likely matchup with Duke awaits.

Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. EST in the O’Connell Center in Gainesville.

Florida vs Xavier: Betting odds for Gators-Musketeers basketball game

Take a look at the odds for the men’s basketball Thanksgiving special on Thursday night against Xavier.

Florida basketball gets set for its Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Xavier Musketeers for the Phil Knight Legacy tournament held in Portland, Oregon. The holiday affair is sure to be a good one as a member of the Southeastern Conference faces a Big East opponent on a neutral court.

The Gators were triumphant in their last game against the Florida State Seminoles, coming back from a deep deficit to prevail by double digits on the road in Tallahassee. However, a misstep against the Florida Atlantic Owls prior still has many unconvinced by [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s squad.

Florida basketball and Xavier to meet in Phil Knight Legacy opening round

The Florida-Xavier series continues on Thanksgiving Day 2022 as the two programs clash in the first round of Phil Knight Legacy event in Portland.

The opening-round matchups of the Phil Knight Legacy event in Portland, Oregon, were released on Monday and Florida drew a familiar foe for Thanksgiving Day. The Gators will face off with the Xavier Musketeers, the same team that eliminated UF in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament and went on to win it all in March.

Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. EST on Nov. 24, and the winner will face whoever wins between Duke and Oregon State. Gonzaga, Portland State, Purdue and West Virginia make up the rest of the field.

Florida and Xavier have faced off a handful of times in recent memory, perhaps most notably in the 2019 Charleston Classic championship game. The Gators took that game but they hold a 2-3 all-time record against the Musketeers.

As much of a redemption game as this matchup is for the returning players on the Gators roster, it’s also a chance for St. Bonaventure transfer [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag] to take revenge on Xavier. Lofton’s 15-point, 11-assist double-double in the semifinals of the NIT wasn’t enough to put the Bonnies over the Musketeers, so he shouldn’t need any extra motivation going into the holiday tournament.

This will also be [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s first in a tournament like this with the Gators. A win would not only be good for Golden’s record at UF but it would likely allow the team to test itself against a perenially strong program like Duke or Gonzaga in the later rounds.
