Commanders announce date for Darrell Green’s jersey retirement

Commanders announce date for Green’s jersey retirement.

The Washington Commanders surprised legendary cornerback Darrell Green back in April, bringing him to the team’s Ashburn headquarters. Green was under the impression he was recording a message for Washington’s incoming draft class.

However, midway through reading the message, Green quickly realized the team was actually honoring him. His entire family entered the room and Green was overcome with emotion when he realized his No. 28 jersey was being retired.

In case you missed it, here’s the complete video.

We knew the Commanders were retiring Green’s No. 28 at some point in the 2024 season, we just didn’t know when.

Now, we do. The Commanders revealed that they will have a ceremony to retire Green’s No. 28 during a Week 7 game at Commanders Field against the Carolina Panthers. The game is slated for a 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff.

Tickets still remain for the game and Washington included a link on its X post.

Green played 20 NFL seasons — all with Washington — won two Super Bowls, was a four-time first-team All-Pro, seven-time Pro Bowler, former NFL Man of the Year, a member of the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade team, a member of the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Here’s why other people’s likes aren’t showing up on Twitter (X) now

Here’s why you can’t see other people’s likes on Twitter (X) any longer.

If you’ve been surfing through Twitter (X) in the past few hours, you might’ve noticed that “likes” are now private on other accounts.

Indeed, the social media platform formerly (but forever) known as Twitter announced this week that “likes” on posts are now being made private to “better protect your privacy.”

According to X Engineering on Tuesday, likes will only be made available to the person who posted the message in question. You can still see the posts you like, but others will not have that capacity now.

Basically, Twitter (X) users will not have the ability to see what other people have liked and which individual accounts have liked a post on a separate account.

This will limit the ability for other accounts to see what you have liked and vice versa. However, you can still like posts, track what posts you’ve liked and see who is liking your posts. And that’s that!

Twitter reacts to UCLA hiring former Commanders/Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy

Social media reacts to Bieniemy heading back to the college game.

Former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has landed a new job. On Saturday, the UCLA Bruins hired Bieniemy as their new offensive coordinator/associate head coach. It’s a similar title to what he held during his lone season in Washington in 2023.

The Bruins were looking for a new offensive coordinator after former head coach Chip Kelly departed to take over as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. The Bruins promoted UCLA alum and former NFL running back DeShaun Foster to head coach.

Bieniemy’s gamble in Washington didn’t work out well for him or the team. After the season, the Commanders fired head coach Ron Rivera, leaving Bieniemy free to pursue his options.

Bieniemys’ one season in Washington was polarizing. Some fans believed he could do no wrong, blaming everything on Rivera, the offensive line, Sam Howell, Dan Snyder, and virtually everyone else — except Bieniemy. Others, though, were ready for a change by midseason.

How did the social media world react to Bieniemy’s new job? We look at some of the top reactions from X — formerly Twitter.

Twitter reacts to Commanders’ coaching staff hires

The reactions are mostly all positives for the Commanders’ new coaching staff — and assistant GM hire.

Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris said one of new coach Dan Quinn’s strengths was his ability to bring elite people with him to Washington.

In two weeks on the job for the Commanders, Quinn has put together an impressive coaching staff consisting of two former head coaches (Kliff Kingsbury & Anthony Lynn) and four former coordinators (John Pagano, Ken Norton Jr., Brian Johnson & Larry Izzo), along with other respected coaches from around the NFL.

Quinn’s staff features a good mix of young and veteran coaches. Except for Washington’s hiring of offensive line coach Bobby Johnson — formerly of the Giants — the fan base has been excited about most of the hires.

Washington’s staff has been widely praised across the NFL, too.

On Wednesday, the Commanders hired Lynn, Darryl Tapp, and Tom Donatell. New GM Adam Peters also hired Lance Newmark away from the Detroit Lions as his assistant GM. Fans were having a good time with the moves.

It’s indeed a new day in Washington.

Here are some of the best reactions across X — formerly Twitter — regarding the Commanders’ new hires.

Twitter reacts to Commanders hiring Bobby Johnson as OL coach

It’s safe to say the Giants are laughing at the Commanders over this move.

When the Washington Commanders hired Kliff Kingsbury (offensive coordinator) and Joe Whitt Jr. (defensive coordinator) last week, the next highly anticipated hire would be on the offensive line.

Who would new head coach Dan Quinn pick as his first offensive line coach in Washington?

Quinn’s first choice was believed to be Dallas tight end coach Lunda Wells. However, the Cowboys denied Quinn permission to interview Wells. On Monday, Quinn hired former Bills and Giants offensive line coach Bobby Johnson as Washington’s O-Line coach.

A quick search of Johnson, and you’ll find he was let go by the Giants recently after two seasons. The Giants allowed 85 sacks in 2023, the most in the NFL and the second-most of all time. While New York’s problems weren’t all due to Johnson, Evan Neal, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, regressed badly.

You can blame injuries for part of New York’s OL woes, but every team has injuries. And when it was revealed that the Commanders had hired Johnson, Giants’ fans either laughed or felt sorry for Washington fans.

Here are some reactions to Johnson’s hiring — they aren’t positive.

Twitter reacts to Mike Zimmer’s return to Cowboys as new DC

A collection of reactions, stats, former-player takes and more to the Cowboys replacing Dan Quinn with another former HC, Mike Zimmer. | From @KDDrumondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys have concluded their search for a new defensive coordinator and are bringing back a familiar face. All-in was the phrase Jerry Jones used to describe their approach to the offseason, but it’s questionable whether he intended to be replacing his DC in a season when the head coach, Mike McCarthy, didn’t have much job security. With Dan Quinn departing to lead the way for the rival Washington Commander, Jones and company set out to replace him atop the defensive totem.

That decision landed Mike Zimmer a new job. Out of football for the last two seasons, Zimmer brings a wealth of experience to the table. This will be his third head coach he’s coordinated for in Dallas alone, on the heels of extensive time as the head coach in Minnesota, where he squared off against McCarthy for years.

Twitter, or X if you’re so inclined, had a lot to say about the pursuit and the hire. There’s a wide gamut of reactions to bringing Zimmer in. Some don’t think Dallas’ hiring pool was deep enough, and there are various thought processes as to why the search mostly focused on former head coaches who have been in the league for a long time.

Others believe Zimmer brings a tenacity to Dallas that had been mising and still others chimed in with statistical evidence as to what they expect as the Cowboys look to turn the page from Quinn’s defense that was strong overall, but still had obvious weaknesses when it mattered most.

Here’s a collection of tweets discussing the hiring of Zimmer.

Twitter reacts to Commanders hiring DC Joe Whitt Jr.

Dan Quinn prys Joe Whitt Jr. away from the Cowboys to be his defensive coordinator in Washington.

The Washington Commanders have found their defensive coordinator.

On Sunday, the Commanders hired Dallas Cowboys secondary coach/passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. as Dan Quinn’s first defensive coordinator in Washington.

Earlier Sunday, the Commanders hired former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator. While some are down on Kingsbury as a head coach, there is excitement about him as a coordinator.

As for Whitt, he’s universally praised for his work with the Dallas secondary. He’s been working with Quinn since 2020 in Atlanta.

How is Whitt’s hiring viewed around the league? Twitter reacts to the Commanders hiring Joe Whitt Jr. as the defensive coordinator.

Twitter reacts to Commanders hiring Kliff Kingsbury as OC

From Kevin Durant to the media and fans, Twitter reacts to Commanders hiring Kliff Kingsbury.

The Washington Commanders have a new offensive coordinator. On Sunday, they hired former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Kingsbury, 44, is a former college head coach and NFL head coach and had a three-year NFL playing career. He’s coached quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murry and Caleb Williams over the years.

With Washington holding to the No. 2 overall pick, Kingsbury’s appointment quickly led to speculation about the Commanders moving up to No. 1.

While Kingsbury’s head coaching record is below .500, the hope is he can be successful at the NFL level, focusing solely on the offense.

What did Washington fans think of the hire? Much like the Dan Quinn hire, feelings were mixed. We look at how media, fans and others reacted to Kingsbury’s hiring, beginning with Washington superfan Kevin Durant.

Twitter reacts to Ben Johnson turning down the Commanders

Social media reacts to Ben Johnson saying no to the Commanders.

Tuesday was a wild day in the search for a new Washington Commanders’ head coach. The day began in Ashburn with Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn in town for his second interview.

After Quinn departed his interview, Washington brass hopped on a flight for Detroit to interview Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

While in flight, Johnson called the Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks to inform them he was withdrawing his name from consideration. Johnson, long perceived to be the top candidate, was returning for another year in Detroit.

Washington still made the trip to interview Glenn.

Not only had most media sources believed Johnson was landing the Washington job, but fans were already convinced he was coming to the Commanders. Fans enjoyed watching Detroit’s offense in the NFC Championship game Sunday night.

So, when the news broke that Johnson was remaining in Detroit, some fans didn’t take it too well.

We go to Twitter for some of those reactions.

Commanders’ Twitter reacts to Cowboys’ playoff loss to Packers

The Packers blew out the Cowboys in Sunday’s NFC wild-card round. How did Twitter react?

The Green Bay Packers embarrassed the Dallas Cowboys 48-32 in Sunday’s NFC wild-card round to send the second-seeded Cowboys home early. It was Dallas’ first home loss of the season.

The loss had social media buzzing about the future of head coach Mike McCarthy. While McCarthy is 67-42 with two NFC East championships in four seasons as head coach of the Cowboys, he’s also 1-3 in the playoffs. And, well, you never know with owner Jerry Jones.

Meanwhile, fans of the Washington Commanders were certainly enjoying Sunday’s festivities at Jerry World. Not only did the Cowboys sweep the 4-13 Commanders in the 2023 regular season, but it was the 45-10 loss to Dallas on Thanksgiving Day that fans remember the most.

After the Cowboys blew the game open in the fourth quarter, quarterback Dak Prescott and others were seen on the sideline eating turkey legs. Washington fans were more upset than the players, who didn’t seem to take care all that much that they were thoroughly embarrassed.

On Sunday, Commanders’ Twitter was enjoying the moment.

Here are some of the best reactions from fans, media and more.
