What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

We went 6-5 in week two and are 25-12 on the year. Continuing to come back down to Earth. Lets see if we can’t pick it back up.

Boise State @ San Diego State (+6.5, O/U 45.5)

Boise State is average. San Diego State is meh. Maybe once they both get to conference play, they’ll pick it up. I have more faith in Boise than I do the Aztecs even though this is in San Diego. The Aztecs haven’t inspired much confidence in them so far this season. Take the Broncos to cover.

Pick: Boise State -6.5

Air Force @ San Jose State (+5.5, O/U 46.5)

San Jose State lost on a pick six. Air Force looks to be a team even with replacing their skill positions. The Falcons are in the driver’s seat for a MW Championship berth at this moment. The Spartans seem like a team to play spoiler. Air Force covers on the road.

Pick: Air Force -5.5

New Mexico @ Massachusetts (-3.5, O/U 50.5)

If UMass wins, they get to claim New Mexico as a part of Massachusetts. They already beat New Mexico State earlier this season and now they get to play the Lobos who are coming off a loss to the Aggies in the Rio Grande Rivalry. Let down game is here, Minutemen cover.

Pick: UMass -3.5

Colorado State @ Middle Tennessee (-2.5, O/U 51.5)

Speaking of let down games, the Rams head to Tennessee after giving Deion Sanders and Co all they could handle. The Blue Raiders are coming off a victory and have a shot to put an arrow in CSU’s heart. CSU seems to have turn a corner and they look to be able to keep it up. Take the Rams outright.

Pick: Colorado State ML

Appalachian State @ Wyoming (-2.5, O/U 42.5)

If this was in North Carolina, I’d be taking App State. But since this is at altitude, I don’t want to touch the spread. The total seems low here. App State has had some high scoring games this season. And curiously, so have the Cowboys. The Texas game being the only one to be under the total here.

Pick: Over

Rapid thoughts on Texas’ 31-10 victory over Wyoming

Texas won the fourth quarter 21-0 after three substandard quarters of play.

Texas defeated Wyoming on Saturday night. Correct it, flush it and move on. Unfortunately, the correcting portion of that process will take plenty of time.

The quarterback was off target on the night. Quinn Ewers would tell you as much. The receivers continued their dropping woes. The offensive line allowed pressure and sacks that it didn’t allow against Alabama. The defense allowed a long touchdown run.

It wasn’t a pretty performance, but the team showed resilience to finish in the fashion it did. So while I wouldn’t feel thrilled about the performance if I were head coach Steve Sarkisian, the group showed resolve that it hasn’t showed in past seasons.

Here’s what we’re taking away from how Texas played against Wyoming.

Texas corrects first half, beats Wyoming 31-10

Texas is now 3-0 for the first time since 2012.

Texas stayed in the win column on Saturday night. After a painstaking first half and long third quarter, the Longhorns defeated the Wyoming Cowboys, 31-10.

The team will undoubtedly have to battle false security from the performance. The offense was bad all around, and somehow the litany of drops by receivers are largely being dismissed.

Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers had a poor night as well in spite of the high drop total. Ewers was wildly off target on a couple throws and had a near interception of his own.

The Texas defense showed vulnerability despite only allowing 10 points on the night.

Despite all of the above concerns, Texas is 3-0 in a year several teams have already suffered a stinker loss. It is the first 3-0 start for the program since 2012. To get there, the Longhorns had a strong finish.

After Wyoming played keep away on an over 10-minute field goal drive, the Longhorns offense exploded led by Jonathan Brooks and Xavier Worthy. Texas won the fourth 21-0 with help from a Jerrin Thompson pick-six interception.

Saturday’s win can be the best or worst thing for Texas heading into the game with Baylor. It all depends on how the Longhorns respond. Correcting the issues that plagued the team would go a long way toward achieving the team’s goals.

Credit Wyoming for a strong performance and well-prepared product. The Cowboys should be a leader to win the Mountain West.

Texas will look to display a more inspired and prepared performance in prime-time against the Baylor Bears next Saturday.

Texas vs. Wyoming: Highlights and reactions from a brutal first half

Texas faithful diagnose the first half against Wyoming.

The Texas Longhorns kicked off against the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday evening. Texas got off to as poor a start as you could expect. The Longhorns allowed Wyoming running back Harrison Waylee to house a 62-yard touchdown run to give the Cowboys a 7-0 lead.

It was the kind of start that has exhausted Texas faithful for several years. And while we expected a slow-starting first half, we didn’t expect the defense to be the culprit.

Fortunately, we saw a change in quality of play as the game progressed. Though starting quarterback Quinn Ewers struggled to consistently connect with receivers, the Texas running game imposed its will on the Wyoming defensive front.

Here are a few of the highlights and reactions from the first half of play.

Pregame social media buzz ahead of No. 4 Texas vs. Wyoming

Texas fans are ecstatic to welcome the team back home after a dominant win over Alabama last week.

No. 4 Texas will host Wyoming in Week 3. Continue reading “Pregame social media buzz ahead of No. 4 Texas vs. Wyoming”

Texas sells out DKR ahead of matchup vs. Wyoming

Expect a superlative crowd on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns have sold out Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium in their first game back at home after defeating Alabama on Sept. 9 in Tuscaloosa.

The 105,213 seat capacity stadium sold out ahead of Texas’ game against the Wyoming Cowboys.

If you are present on Saturday, expect a superlative crowd of fans to welcome back the Horns. Texas has an opportunity to become one of the finest and most strident crowds in college football, with a night game and new burnt orange LED lights to pump up the crowd.

You can expect a lights-out performance by the offense as it comes off its best showing of the year against Wyoming in Week 3 at 7 p.m. CT.

Wyoming game could be the beginning of a special run for Texas

Texas will look to prove its winning culture against the Wyoming Cowboys.

The No. 4 Texas Longhorns (2-0) begin their second season on Saturday. With the exception of Oklahoma, this season involves facing lesser brands that boast lesser players.

Texas kicks off its post-Alabama slate with the Wyoming Cowboys (2-0) who have a signature win of their own. Wyoming opened the season with a stunning overtime victory over Texas Tech (0-2) who I had playing in the Big 12 championship opposite Texas.

If both teams give their best effort, the Cowboys will lose by 20 points or more. Whether or not Texas gives its best effort in this game and any other remaining game is the question.

Let’s be perfectly clear: If Texas can beat Alabama 34-24 in the fashion it did last Saturday, the team can, and probably should, go 12-0. That’s simply not how things have worked for the Longhorns over the past decade. Lethargy and false sense of confidence have pervaded the program in the past when things have gone well.

This group seems different.

There appears to be a winning culture in the Texas locker room. There’s leadership from the players who have earned the necessary respect of their teammates to lead. The next ten games will reveal whether or not that notion is true.

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

We went 7-4 in week two and are 19-7 on the year. Slowly coming back down to earth. Let’s see if we can’t reverse the trend this week.

Utah State @ Air Force (-9.5, O/U 46.5)

The over in an academy game? Yes. This matchup has gone over the 46 points mark in every matchup bar one. And that one was a 42 point total. Air Force gets their first true defensive test of the year. Utah State meanwhile gets a chance to show everyone they are for real.

Pick: Over

North Dakota @ Boise State (No Line)

It’s the start of the Boise State revenge tour. The Broncos have looked oddly pedestrian the first two weeks of the year. North Dakota is running into a potential buzzsaw. Or we could see North Dakota give Boise State a scare. Doubtful, but anything is possible.

Pick: Boise State

San Diego state @ #16 Oregon sTate (-24.5, O/U 48.5)

There looked to be good things coming for the Aztecs this year. They thought they had found their QB in Jalen Mayden, but the San Diego State offense hasn’t looked as good as advertised. The defense hasn’t been great either, though it has kept them in games. The Beavers are looking to add another check mark to their resume.

Pick: Over

Vanderbilt @ UNLV (+4.5, O/U 59.5)

This is the trap game of the week for the Mountain West. We don’t actually know what the Rebels are going to bring to the table this season. And Vanderbilt’s performance against Hawai’i doesn’t inspire confidence in them to cover either. Under all the way.

Pick: Under

San Jose State @ Toldeo (-7.5, O/U 57.5)

I don’t know man. This just feel disrespectful to the Spartans. Yeah, Toldeo barely lost to Illinois, but Illinois laid an egg against Kansas. San Jose State has had to run through two Pac-12 schools that are on one so far this year. This should be a better indicator of where they stand and the cover seems real.

Pick: San Jose State +7.5

Wyoming @ #4 Texas (-29.5, O/U 49.5)

Whelp, good luck Wyoming. This is probably somewhat of a let down game for Texas after their win over Alabama last week. But it still won’t be close. The over feels safer because we could see Texas just relax and run their offense and keep everything in front of them on defense.

Pick: Over

Texas will debut new LED lights on Saturday at DKR

Texas’ game against Wyoming will have a special touch to it.

The Texas Longhorns will be showing off their state of the art LED Lights on Saturday against the Wyoming Cowboys.

Chris Del Conte, the Athletic Director for the Horns, first shared a video via Twitter on August 10th of what the new lights will look like.

The Longhorns also gave fans a glimpse of what Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium will look like with the new touch. It appears Texas can now turn the entire stadium burnt orange, creating a fun environment for fans in attendance.

On Thursday, third-year head coach Steve Sarkisian commented on the new lights and how it could improve Texas’ home-field advantage.

“Yeah, I am excited about it. I am a fan of college football and I think the better environment that we can create, the better atmosphere we can create for our fans, for our players, the better it is for everybody. I think it provides energy to the stadium, I think our play provides energy to the fans, and the fans provide energy to our team, so creating that home field advantage, creating that experience, here at DKR, I think is something I appreciate. You know CDC and Drew Martin, their work that they put together to continue to create the environment that this place can have, and I’ve seen it grow from year one to year two, and now we are into year three and we’ve got some things going so I am looking forward to that.”

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday on Longhorn Network.
