Mountain West Football: Examining The Conference’s New Coordinator Hires

Nearly every team in the Mountain West made a change with one or both coordinator positions. Here’s what to know about the new faces.

Mountain West Football: Examining The Conference’s New Coordinator Hires

The conference’s five new head coaches have already made crucial hires, but those aren’t the only new coordinators in the Mountain West.

New faces in new spaces.

Boise State

When Zak Hill departed for greener pastures in Tempe, the Broncos decided to promote from within, elevating Eric Kiesau from wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator. His history in that position is, to be charitable, checkered.

Since 2009, Kiesau has spent parts of six seasons as a coordinator at Colorado, Washington, Kansas, and Fresno State. By Offensive SP+, just one of his offenses, the 2013 Washington Huskies, finished ranked better than 66th. His most recent turn at the helm was his most disastrous, as well, as the 2016 Fresno State Bulldogs finished next to last nationally by SP+, 123rd in yards per play, and 120th in points per drive.

The caveats, at least compared to his most recent history, is that Kiesau will be working with a higher level of talent across the board and also with an offensive-minded head coach, but it’s anyone’s guess as to how things will turn out if the responsibility for calling plays falls to him. Bryan Harsin wasn’t forthcoming about that after the team’s Las Vegas Bowl flop, so it might have given him pause.

Colorado State

Steve Addazio didn’t waste a lot of time filling out his new staff and his coordinator choices make for some fascinating contrasts to the Mike Bobo era. On offense, Joey Lynch arrives in Fort Collins from Muncie, Indiana and his alma mater, Ball State. His six-year tenure had its ups and downs, which is certainly reflective of the MAC at large: The 2019 Cardinals finished 60th by Offensive SP+, a high water mark, but three times they finished in the triple digits.

What will be most interesting is how closely the new CSU offense hews to what we’re accustomed to seeing from Addazio. Ball State ran the ball 58.1% of the time last fall and finished as the MAC’s highest-scoring team, but they threw it 54% of the time back in 2018.

The defense, meanwhile, has an old hand in charge with Chuck Heater. His career, which stretches back to 1976, has too many stops to list but Rams fans can be encouraged by his most recent work. In five years as Marshall’s defensive coordinator from 2013-17, the Thundering Herd finished outside the top 20 by yards per play just once.

Fresno State

New head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb have an extensive history of working together, having done so at NAIA Sioux Falls and Eastern Michigan before arriving in the Central Valley together, so it wasn’t too much of a surprise that Grubb was retained for 2020. The offense, which averaged a respectable 2.39 points per drive after averaging 2.69 the year before, was hardly the problem last year.

The defense missed its star power and regressed in 2019, so DeBoer turned back to Indiana and brought in William Inge, who coordinated special teams for the Hoosiers in 2018 and 2019. His career has been something of a winding road but, for the most part, it’s hard to argue the results: He worked with Khalil Mack during his time at Buffalo in 2010-11, for example, and shepherded breakouts from Tegray Scales at Indiana and Alex Daniels at Cincinnati (for good measure, IU also finished in the top 50 by Special Teams SP+ in 2018 and 2019).

Hawaii

Todd Graham reached into the Warriors past, and into the depths of college footballl, for an inspired hire on defense, bringing Victor Santa Cruz back to the islands after a prolonged stint at Division II Azusa Pacific. 2019 was something of an off year for the Cougars defense because they finished third out of four teams in the Great Northwestern Athletic Conference in yards per play allow, but they allowed under 5.5 yards per play every other season since joining the GNAC in 2012.

Graham’s choice to coordinate the offense is just as inspired, albeit a little more risky. If G.J. Kinne‘s name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you remember his successful stint as a quarterback at Tulsa, under Graham, where his career passing yards rank third in program history. In the years since, he worked as a graduate assistant at SMU and an offensive analyst at Arkansas before jumping to the NFL ranks to join Doug Pederson’s staff in Philadelphia.

It is his first time in a coordinator role, however, so the hire is still something of a roll of the dice. Learning from an offensive mind like Pederson, however, is a plus, and his background suggests a wide-open passing attack that will feel right at home in a Warriors program that’s long developed high-flying offenses.

Nevada

The ousting of defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel was a mild surprise, which could make Brian Ward‘s arrival one of the most important in the Mountain West. Nevada Sports Net’s Chris Murray has a detailed summary of Ward’s background but, depending on your perspective, some of the red flags noted could be overblown.

On a per-play basis, Syracuse’s drop-off from 2018 (5.83 YPP allowed) to 2019 (6.07 YPPA) is not as drastic as you might expect. This bears out in Defensive SP+, where the Orange dipped from 60th to 75th but still outperformed a reloading offense, and in other measures like sack rate (8.3% to 6.8%, the latter of which was still 51st nationally). And despite getting the axe in November, Syracuse was bested in the ACC by only Clemson in takeaways.

Ten momths away from bowl games, sure let’s predict them.

Some super early preseason fun

Yes, the bowl games are 10 months away but let’s have some offseason fun and try to predict where these Mountain West teams will go bowling. There are at least six bowl spots for the Mountain West and the option for more with the Cheeze-It Bowl being a backup or if the Mountain West champion goes to a New Year’s Six Bowl Game.

To figure out these bowl projections this early is to use our staff’s way-too-early power rankings and for the New Year’s Six spot for a Group of Five team we used a composite of the major preseason top 25 rankings to find the highest rated G5 team.

That composite that includes G5 teams has Cincinnati as the highest Group of Five team with Boise State close behind. So, this first one will not include a Mountain West team in a big money bowl game.

These bowl projections are a whole lot of fun to speculate nearly a year out so take these projections with that in mind before yelling at us on Twitter or Facebook.

A few notes about the bowl lineups. There is a new bowl lineup for 2020-26 with one game sort of a TBD with a game in the Dallas area. That game looks to be the Frisco Bowl (that is what FBSchedules.com has listed) which is in that Dallas region. The opponent is not locked down as the leagues mentioned are the American, C-USA and MAC; so, we will just toss some random team in this initial prediction.

The Las Vegas Bowl is no more and it is basically shifting the same matchup to the new Los Angeles Bowl at SoFi Stadium.

The Hawaii Bowl is also a weird option as it is a three-team mess with AAC and C-USA plus Hawaii. As usual, it makes the most sense that the Hawaii Bowl will host Hawaii if they are not in a New Year’s Six game.

Finally, if the Mountain West is the highest-rated team in the College Football Playoff then a New Year’s Six Bowl game.

  • College Football Playoff/New Year’s Six Bowl
  • Los Angeles (Bowl name TBA) vs. Pac-12, Los Angeles
  • Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. MAC, Boise, Idaho
  • New Mexico Bowl vs. C-USA, Albuquerque, N.M.
  • NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl vs. MAC, Tucson, Ariz.
  • SoFi Hawai’i Bowl vs. AAC or C-USA, Honolulu
  • Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl vs. AAC, C-USA, AAC
  • Cheez-It® Bowl vs. Big Ten or Big 12, Phoenix (MW is an alternate)

Where are the Mountain West players at the Senior Bowl going to get drafted?

More mock drafts.

With the conclusion of the 2019 football season, it’s now that time of year where notable college players are showing off their skills in showcase games. This week, there have been numerous reports on Mountain West players participating in practices for the 2020 Senior Bowl. We’ll take a look at each player and see where the latest mock drafts have them going.

Jordan Love

Leaving school early to declare for the draft, Love had a strong week in practices. NBC Sports has touted his “cannon arm” and graded him performing well above other notable quarterbacks in practice such as Michigan’s Shea Patterson and Washington State’s Anthony Gordon. CBS Sports has also reported on Love’s strong week and how he looks like a potential first-rounder.

Here are the latest mocks where Love could go during the 2020 draft.

Bleacher Report: Pick #23 to the New England Patriots

CBS: Pick #13 to the Indianapolis Colts

With the First Pick: Pick #13 to the Indianapolis Colts

Fansided: Pick #24 to the New Orleans Saints

NFL.com: Pick #13 to the Indianapolis Colts

Logan Wilson

The reliable and hard-nosed linebacker from Wyoming will be playing on the North’s team when the game kicks off. He had a terrific career with the Cowboys, racking up 421 total tackles and 10 interceptions. This week he was able to show off his nose for the football on day three of practices for the Senior Bowl, snagging an interception. There is little doubt he’ll be able to carve out a spot in the NFL come draft day.

[lawrence-related id=24707]

Mocks for Wilson in the 2020 draft:

CBS sports: 5th round pick, #167 overall to the Dallas Cowboys

Walter Football: Projects Wilson to go between the 4th and 6th rounds.

Keith Ismael

The three-year starting offensive lineman for the Aztecs has expressed his dream of playing for the pros. He’ll get a shot to shine in the Senior Bowl as he had a strong career with the Aztecs, starting 38 of the 39 games in which he played. He also garnered All-Mountain West Conference honors in each of his playing years.

Mock round-up for Ismael and other news:

Drafttek: Projects the Center as a mid-round pick with the potential to move up.

Draftblaster: Has Ismael as a top-five center prospect.

Rotoworld: Has Ismael as a potential riser; has all the physical tools to succeed in NFL.

Matt and are Jeremy are back to talk some offseason Mountain West football. They begin with the latest in coaching changes which include San Diego State’s Rocky long stepping down and Brady Hoke taking over. The other move saw Nick Rolovich leave Hawaii for Washington State, plus Rolovich raided the Wyoming defensive staff to add to his own at Washington State.

They also dive into the Boise State vs. Mountain West in regards to the TV deal. Mountain West claimed that this separate deal for Broncos home football games is done after this current deal but Boise State disagrees.

Which players had the most monster games of the 2019 season in the Mountain West Conference?

Big performances deserve big props.

Football is a team sport but, every so often, things break in such a way that one man can take over and change the course of a contest. The Mountain West is no exception in this regard, so as we continue looking back at the season that was, those dominant individual performances deserve a little time in the spotlight.

Here are the ten best single-game performances from a Mountain West player in 2019.

[lawrence-related id=24770]

10. October 26, 2019 – Wyoming’s Xazavian Valladay is the Cowboys’ blunt instrument of choice vs. Nevada

2019 was Valladay’s opportunity to exemplify just what Cowboys football is all about and the Wolf Pack found him in rare form. Though his only touchdown came courtesy of a Sean Chambers pass to open the scoring, Nevada had no answer on his 28 touches all afternoon, coughing up 280 yards of total offense.

9. October 11, 2019 – Colorado State wide receiver Warren Jackson basically catches everything vs. New Mexico

The Rams’ leading receiver proved to be a nightmare for just about every defender unlucky enough to draw him this fall, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Lobos still wake up in a sweat after his performance against them. Jackson caught nine passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, his best numbers in a four-game stretch where he topped 100 receiving yards.

8. November 23, 2019 – Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III goes HAM through the air vs. New Mexico

The Falcons had a special season and Hammond III was one of the most obvious reasons why, but he was never better than when he put up the kind of passing numbers we hadn’t seen from an Air Force quarterback in roughly 40 years. None of his touchdown throws were gimmes, either, coming from 27, 46, 59, and 76 yards against the Lobos. Add in a rushing touchdown, which made him one of just three Mountain West players with five total touchdowns in a game this fall, and it’s an easy inclusion here.

7. November 2, 2019 – Boise State running back George Holani takes over to help escape San Jose State

There weren’t a lot of teams in 2019 who gave the Broncos fits quite like upstart San Jose State, but the freshman Holani made sure there wouldn’t be an upset. After collecting just 20 yards and a short touchdown in the first half, Holani scored three more times and finished with 143 yards of total offense.

6. November 9, 2019 – Hawaii quarterback Chevan Cordeiro oversees a flawless offense against San Jose State

You never knew what you were going to see when you stayed up late for Warriors football and, against the Spartans, it happened that neither offense could be stopped… literally. Cordeiro, the redshirt freshman, outdueled Spartans quarterback Josh Love by engineering a scoring drive every time his Hawaii offense had the ball.

The result? Five total touchdowns — three through the air and two on the ground — and 364 yards of total offense. Whew.

Many first-place votes.

With college football officially in the books with the national title game it is always a fun exercise to take a stab at who will be the best teams next year. Our staff has put together their thoughts for an early 2020 Mountain West football power rankings.

Now, these were completed during the time between Rocky Long stepping down at San Diego State and Nick Rolovich leaving Hawaii for Washington State. So, these votes will not reflect that which is something to consider when looking over these.

These rankings are probably going to be way off as in last year’s 2019 first power rankings we had Fresno State and Boise State tied for first place, and the Bulldogs did not even make a bowl game. Plus, Air Force was eighth and the Falcons finished the season 12-2 and ranked in the final AP poll.

Here are some of the votes from our staff.

Matt also has a thread with a blurb on each team you can read here.

There is a lot to consider for voting teams where. Like new coaches which the West Division now has four new coaches, returning talent, players leaving to the NFL, transfers in and out, close games last year, reputation, returning talent, and sometimes just a gut feeling.

Three teams that have the most disparity in vote placement are San Jose State. Hawaii and Fresno State. Those three teams had votes that were spread about over eight places. There also are five teams with a first-place votes in Boise State, Air Force, Wyoming, Hawaii, and San Diego State.

Feel free to give us your thoughts on this over at our Facebook or Twitter accounts with your poll.

No doubt the conference balled out this fall.

College football’s national championship game will close the book on the 2019 season tomorrow. Before that happens, we wanted to look back at some of Mountain West football’s best individual plays, a lot of which reflected the unexpected twists and turns that the campaign took throughout the fall. From epic game-winning kicks to contested catches in traffic, the conference gave us everything you could ask for and then some.

Here are the ten best plays from 2019.

10. Wyoming’s Sean Chambers stiff-arms a defender into oblivion vs. Missouri

Welcome to 7220, you can see yourself to the door when you’ve had enough.

9. San Diego State’s Jesse Matthews snags the ball out of the air with three defenders around him vs. Utah State

Credit Ryan Agnew first for extending the play, but the Aztecs’ freshman receiver definitely upped the difficulty level on this one while making it look easy.

8. Fresno State’s Mykal Walker blows up a 4th down play vs. USC

The Bulldogs came up tantalizingly short against the Trojans, but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. This defensive play from Walker, who had moved from the defensive line to middle linebacker, gave them a chance to steal the win.

7. Nevada’s Brandon Talton leaves no doubt while crushing a game-winning field goal vs. Purdue

The Wolf Pack had one of the wildest overall seasons in the Mountain West and that started all the way back in Week 1, when a walk-on kicker from Vacaville, California made sure everyone in college football knew his name with his first memorable kick of the season.

6. Utah State’s David Woodward makes his own break vs. Colorado State

In case you’re wondering why the Mountain West made Woodward a first-team all-conference selection despite missing six games, this is Exhibit A.

2019 season is in the books

The Mountain West football season is over and with the season completed we have one final power rankings. These power rankings are much different compared to the final regular-season poll.

Boise State was a unanimous pick but after its bowl loss that is no longer the case after they lost to Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl. Also, the Mountain West had one of its best seasons over with four teams win double-digit games.

Those teams are the Broncos, San Diego State, Hawaii, and Air Force; those teams are also the ones that all took home a first-place vote. Despite the first-place votes getting spread around, the top four teams remain exactly the same.

In fact, the entire poll order remained the same which is not all that surprising but the Boise State loss had some people lose confidence after its loss but going undefeated in league play and finishing 12-2 was still considered the best team in the Mountain West.
