Gear: TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls
Price: $24.99 per dozen
Specs: Two-piece, ionomer-covered ball available in white, yellow and Ink pattern (green, blue, orange, pink and red)

Who It’s For: Budget-minded golfers who want more distance off the tee.

The Skinny: TaylorMade designed a new, ultra-soft core for the SpeedSoft for more distance, then developed a new visual pattern to make it stand out.

The Deep Dive: TaylorMade is trying to make significant inroads in the golf ball category in 2024, and the balls that you will hear the most about are the TP5 and TP5x, along with their TP5 and TP5x Pix counterparts. Those are the balls that Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Nelly Korda and Rickie Fowler are playing, and those are the balls that will put the most considerable dent in your wallet. For many players, $54.99 for a dozen balls is just not going to happen, and the $42.99 per dozen Tour Response may be out of reach, too.

For budget-minded golfers who still want a ball that delivers solid performance and doesn’t feel like a rock when you hit it, TaylorMade is releasing the SpeedSoft. This two-piece, ionomer-covered ball was designed to provide soft feel, more distance and possibly add some pizazz to your game.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls
The Ink version of the SpeedSoft ball is eye-catching. (TaylorMade)

At the heart of the SpeedSoft is the newly developed PWRCore. It is an exceptionally soft core, so every golfer should be able to activate it off the tee for more distance. However, because the SpeedSoft has a 50 compression, it holds the distinction of being the softest-feeling ball in the TaylorMade lineup.

The SpeedSoft does not create the same level of greenside spin that the urethane-covered TP5 and TP5x can. Still, its ionomer cover is designed to generate a mid- to high-launch trajectory with wedges, so golfers should be able to create stopping power by bringing shots in more vertically.

In addition to traditional white and yellow color options, TaylorMade is offering the SpeedSoft in a new Ink pattern that features splashes of green, blue, red or pink, along with a complimenting black. The pattern, which looks like splattered paint, is eye-catching, but there is still an arrowed side stamp for golfers who like to use a line on their ball when they putt.

Who It’s For: Golfers who want the look of a better-player’s iron combined with the distance of a game-improvement club.

The Skinny: These hollow-bodied, better-player distance irons look like blades but were made to generate more ball speed and distance while also offering enhanced forgiveness and feel.

The Deep Dive: Ping recently released the Blueprint T and Blueprint S, the new irons that comprise the “precision” offerings in Ping’s stable designed for pros and accomplished players. With its machined back and classic looks, the just-released i530 appears like it fits into that category too. However, several hidden design features and technologies set it apart and position it as a better-player’s distance iron.

The i530 replaces the i525 iron that was released in 2022, and it has a hollow-body design that is similar to the design of Ping’s metalwoods. The thin, forged C300 maraging steel face is welded to the 17-7 stainless steel body, which creates a hollow chamber inside the head. This hollow-body design allows the hitting area to flex more efficiently at the moment of impact, so golfers can generate more ball speed and distance.

Ping i530 irons
A toe screw and heel weight create more stability without making the i530 bigger. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

To improve the sound and feel of impact, engineers added a polymer to the back of the face. It soaks up excessive vibrations without restricting the bending of the hitting area at impact, so it does not reduce ball speed.

When golfers see the back of the i530, they might think the milled area is there for show, but each machined line represents an area where steel was removed from a high location in the head. Machining the back and making it thinner created discretionary weight that designers were able to reposition in the form of an internal mass pad that is 10 grams heavier than the pad found in the i525. Consequently, the i530 has a lower the center of gravity (CG) location, which should help golfers create a higher launch angle and more stopping power on the greens. A bonus of positioning extra mass low in the head is it puts more steel directly behind the area where golfers tend to hit the ball, which results in extra ball speed.

To make the i530 more forgiving without making the clubs larger, Ping designed each head to house a high-density toe weight that compliments a weight added to the hosel area. The added mass increases the perimeter weighting of the heads, making them more stable on off-center hits.

In addition to a Hydropearl 2.0 finish that improves performance in wet conditions, Ping gave the i530 MicroMax grooves. Introduced on the i59 and the i230 irons, MicroMax grooves are packed more tightly together in the hitting area to enhance performance in all types of moisture conditions and reduce the effect of flier lies.

Best golf wedges you can buy in 2024

Check out Golfweek’s list of the best golf wedges available to purchase in 2024.

Wedges are the most confusing and intimidating golf club category because there are so many options to choose from and many players don’t really understand how to properly use wedges to hit chip shots, bunker shots, flop shops and pitch shots. They hear terms like bounce, sole grind, heel and toe relief and camber and nod, but in the back of their minds they are thinking, “What the hell does that mean?”

To make matters worse, iron lofts have become stronger over the last decade, with many game-improvement sets coming with a 9-iron that has a loft of around 38 degrees and a pitching wedge at 42 degrees. If a recreational golfer has a 56-degree sand wedge, which is typical, that’s a 14-degree gap between wedges, which can put you in between clubs on lots of short game shots.

To reduce the intimidation factor and help golfers find the right wedges more easily, many manufacturers have developed online fitting tools. With just a few clicks to tell these systems about your game and the conditions you encounter on the course, they can provide you with club, loft and sole grind recommendations.

Of course, the best way to discover your ideal wedges is to work in-person with a custom fitter who can evaluate your performance with several different wedges.

The list below is intended to act as an educational starting point and help you get familiar with the most popular wedges and the clubs you will likely see in pro shops and golf specialty stores right now.

Best golf balls you can buy in 2024

Check out Golfweek’s list of the best golf balls available to purchase in 2024.

A decade ago, the sight of a non-white golf ball would raise a few eyebrows, but those days are long gone. TaylorMade, one of the largest golf ball makers in the world, predicts its non-white ball sales in 2024 – comprised of balls with stripes, special markings or customized logos – will eclipse traditional white ball sales for the first time.

Golf balls with corporate logos have been popular for decades, but tour pros like Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood compete in PGA Tour events, major championships and Ryder Cups using TaylorMade’s TP5 and TP5x Pix balls that have markings designed to aid in alignment and to reveal how purely you’ve hit your putt. Callaway’s Truvis balls, which are covered in pentagons, have been popular for several years and Srixon’s Divide balls are eye-catching in every weather condition and also help golfers perform better on the greens.

At the same time, manufacturers like Titleist, maker of the Pro V1, and Callaway, maker of the new Chrome Tour, have never made balls to a higher precisely, which means that from ball to ball, consistency is better than ever before.

With such a wide variety of balls on the market, ranging in price from about $22 to around $55 per dozen, finding a ball that matches your game and your budget can be tricky, but Golfweek’s 2024 Golf Ball Guide is here to help. Prioritize what you want from your golf ball (distance, short game spin, soft feel), and then think about a price range you are willing to pay. Keep in mind that if you go down in price, you will likely have to compromise something because the materials that make premium balls perform so well don’t come cheap.

Buy a three-ball sleeve of several different balls, go to the course and see how they perform on chip shots, pitch shots and short approach shots first, then see how they work for you with long irons and woods. The unique way you swing will make each ball play differently, but testing balls on the course will always be the best way to find your perfect golf ball.

Note: Golf balls are often released on two-year product cycles, which means updates are released every two years. For that reason, you will see several 2023 offerings alongside new 2024 putters.

The Skinny: The Pix golf balls perform identically to TaylorMade’s 2024 TP5 and TP5x balls, but updated designs added to the cover help golfers clearly see how the ball is rolling on the greens.

The Deep Dive: For decades, non-white golf balls were few and far between, with a handful of players opting to use high-visibility yellow or orange balls while playing partners snickered behind their backs. Tradition ruled, and golf doesn’t break from tradition easily.

Times have changed, and attitudes toward non-white golf balls have shifted dramatically. In 2024, TaylorMade anticipates selling more non-white golf balls than traditional all-white golf balls for the first time. While the MySymbol program allows for freedom of expression and personalization, the Pix balls are going to account for a significant percentage of TaylorMade’s non-white-ball increase.

The original TP5 and TP5x Pix balls were initially designed with the help of researchers at the University of Indiana in 2019. It was revealed at that time that we see a two-colored pattern more effectively and track it more easily than with a single color, so the X-shaped Pix markings were red and yellow. The Pix markings were updated in 2021 with the help of Rickie Fowler, who likes to draw a line on his golf ball. The new design allowed for that and created a clear path of white that made it easy to see if the roll a player created with his putting stroke was ideal.

SHOP: TaylorMade TP5 Pix & TP5X Pix golf balls

TaylorMade TP5 Pix

For 2024, the TP5 Pix and TP5x Pix remain identical to their all-white (or all-yellow) counterparts, with each ball having a soft core that is encased in three mantle layers and a cast urethane cover for extra greenside spin. However, the triangular black and orange design has been replaced with a diamond shape that has the orange areas on the inside area and the black pieces on the outside. Now, when you make a high-quality putting stroke, a white path is created in the center, and black stripes are formed on the outside as the ball rolls. If you swing across the ball as you putt or make a non-solid strike, the orange and black diamonds will blur and immediately provide you with visual feedback.

TaylorMade also made the side stamp and the lines that extend off it longer, so if players want to use it as an alignment aid instead of drawing a line on the ball, it will be easier to use.

“Tommy Fleetwood is playing a Pix ball, not just because he likes the performance of the ball,” said Mike Fox, TaylorMade’s senior category director for golf balls. “He’s using it because it makes him a better putter.”

The Deep Dive: The just-released Cobra 3D Printed family of putters is about as space-age putters get, but Cobra has new offerings in 2024 for players who want a classic-looking flat stick, the Vintage line.

Cobra’s Vintage line first appeared in 2021, and from a shaping standpoint, the 2024 offerings are very similar. The Sport-40 and Sport-60 are traditional heel-to-weighted blades that would look right at home in the bag of a PGA Tour player, while the Nova, with its wing-style extensions in the heel and toe, Stingray mallet and the semi-circular Cuba mallet will look familiar to most golfers too.

The most significant upgrade Cobra gave the Vintage putters is a new variable-loft Pebax insert. The hitting area is divided into four regions, with the top having 4 degrees of loft. Each segment of the face goes down in loft by 1 degree until you reach the bottom of the face, which has just 1 degree of loft. The design is meant to present the same loft to the ball on every stroke, even if your hands press forward slightly at impact or you swing up into the ball.

The technology comes from Cobra’s partner, L.A. Golf, and Cobra designers have used it in the past, but the addition of a lightweight thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) in the insert helps impact feel softer, especially compared to the firmer-feeling face of the 3-D Printed putters.

The body of each Vintage putter is metal injection molded (MIM) using 305 stainless steel, and each head has an adjustable weight in the heel and toe areas. Golfers will not be able to remove the weights, but fitters can swap the weights – which range from 5 grams to 25 grams – to change the swing weight of the putter based on its length and a golfer’s preferences.

Who it’s For: Golfers who want extra stability and modern design with enhanced alignment features.

The Skinny: By 3D printing a significant portion of the body, Cobra designers can radically shift weight to enhance performance while the variable-loft face encourages a more consistent roll.

The Deep Dive: When you make a new golf club, whether it’s a driver, a wedge or even a putter, one of the biggest challenges is to manipulate weight and remove it from places where it doesn’t do anything to areas when it can improve performance. As much as any brand in the industry, Cobra has aggressively used exotic materials, not just because they are cool, but because things like carbon fiber, tungsten and other things aside from stainless steel can make clubs perform better.

In 2021, Cobra released its first 3D Printed putters, taking the concept of exotic materials to a whole new level. Now, Cobra is releasing an updated family of 3D Printed putters.

Like the first generation of 3D Printed putters, the new offerings are aggressively shaped and made to be ultra-stable on mis-hits to keep putts you hit outside the sweet spot rolling on your intended line.

At first glance, you will see a carbon fiber crown and a four-level face that is made from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum, an exceptionally light material. Made in partnership with L.A. Golf, the top portion of the hitting area has 4 degrees of loft, but each section drops in loft by 1 degree as the hitting area lowers, leaving the bottom with just 1 degree of loft. The idea is to create a consistent amount of loft on every putt, so if your hands are forward on one stroke, which would naturally de-loft the face, the 4 degrees of loft on the top can help to counteract it. If you swing up into a putt, which would add loft, the lower-lofted bottom of the face accommodates that type of stroke.

That’s what you see, but looking closer at the body of the 3D Printed putters reveals what makes them unique. Each head has a dark nylon area in the center that is made using 3D-printed nylon that is shaped into a lattice. This technique allows designers to make shapes and structures that could not be produced by forging or milling, while saving weight. The nylon also absorbs vibrations to improve sound and feel.

The rest of the body of the 3D Printed putters is made using metal-injection molded (MIM) 304 stainless steel.

The result of opting for all these high-tech materials is Cobra removed weight from the top, middle and face of the 3D Printed putters and shifted more of it to the back in the heel and toe areas, which boosts the moment of inertia (MOI) and helps the putters resist twisting on off-center strikes.

On the bottom of each club are weight ports that can hold weight screws ranging from 5 grams up to 25 grams. Custom fitters will be able to use these weights to adjust the swing weight of each putter based on the length that is ideal for specific players.

The 3D Printed putters are available in three different head styles, including the high-MOI Agera, the smaller Agera RS, the fang-style SuperNova and the blade-style GrandSport 35.
