Photos: The best (and worst) of World Golf Hall of Fame plaques

Some of the bronze plaques for the 176 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame are better than others.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — It’s golf’s highest honor.

To be elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame is to be enshrined among the greatest. There have been only 176 men and women to be inducted in the Hall.

When the facility opened at World Golf Village in 1998, the members were commemorated with crystals but they were mounted in the floor and took up too much space for special events. So, the crystals were removed and bronze plaques replaced them. Some are better than others. According to the Florida Times Union, the plaques will not be relocated to Pinehurst, N.C., where the Hall will take up residency again in 2024.

Some of the plaques, it really helps to have the name written below it because the resemblance is minimal at best. See if you can name the Hall member.

Phil Mickelson joins list of players to finish top 10 at the Masters in four different decades

When your name is next to Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus, you’re doing something right.

AUGUSTA, GA. — Finishing in the top 10 of the Masters is an impressive accomplishment no matter the year. After all, Augusta National Golf Club isn’t for the faint of heart.

But to do so in four different decades? That’s a testament to a player’s longevity and ability to navigate Alister MacKenzie’s masterpiece among the Georgia pines.

Stats guru Justin Ray from the Twenty First Group was first to point out that Phil Mickelson had a shot to join the exclusive group of players with a top 10 this week, and Sunday afternoon he did just that.

Mickelson, who missed last year’s event after his controversial statements and move to LIV Golf, shot a 7-under 65 during the final round of the 2023 Masters to shoot up the leaderboard into a tie for second place with Brooks Koepka. A three-time winner of the green jacket (2004, 2006, 2010), Lefty has now finished inside the top 10 a whopping 15 times in more than 30 appearances at Augusta National.

2023 Masters: A look at the record book at Augusta National Golf Club

We offer some of the most interesting records at the Masters: birdies, eagles, cuts made and more.

There have been plenty of records set since the Masters Tournament started in 1934. Hole-by-hole scoring records, round records, tournament records – tons of interesting marks and a Hall of Fame list of familiar names stacked in the official book for Augusta National Golf Club.

Which record matters most?

That has to be most wins, and that would be Jack Nicklaus with six (1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986). Tiger Woods is entered this year, and a victory by Woods (1997, 2001, 2022, 2005, 2019) would tie Nicklaus for that record. They are followed by Arnold Palmer with four titles (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964), then five players with three wins at Augusta National (Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson).

Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg wins 2022 Ben Hogan Award

Aberg received the award at Colonial Country Club alongside fellow finalists Sam Bennett and Eugenio Chacarra.

Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg will compete for a national title later this week, but he’s already got some hardware for his stellar season.

The junior from Sweden won the 2022 Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank, which annually honors the best men’s college golfer based on collegiate, amateur and professional events over the last 12 months. Aberg is the first-ever winner from Texas Tech and the third from the Big 12 Conference over the last five years, joining Viktor Hovland (Oklahoma State, 2019) and Doug Ghim (Texas, 2018). The award also earns Aberg an exemption into the PGA Tour’s 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Aberg recently won the Big 12 Championship, tied for sixth at the NCAA New Haven Regional and will compete at the NCAA Championship this week at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Swede also has a runner up at the 2021 European Amateur under his belt, along with a T-30 at the DP World Tour’s Scandinavian Mixed and a 51st place finish at the PGA Tour 2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Aberg received the award at an event at Colonial Country Club alongside fellow finalists Sam Bennett  (Texas A&M) and Eugenio Chacarra (Oklahoma State).

Masters: Ranking every champion by number of titles

A finite list of humans throughout history have put on the green jacket in celebration.

Hello friends.

It’s that time of year again. The weather is slowly thawing the northeast, flowers are blooming down south, and the sun is beginning to stay in the sky a bit longer. For golf fans, all of this means one thing.

It’s time for the Masters.

The annual migration to Augusta, Georgia, is the highlight of the year for not only fans but most of the players driving down Magnolia Lane this week. Augusta National Golf Club, over time, has become the game’s holy land, a place that many dream of going to but a mere few actually reach.

A finite list of humans throughout history have put on the green jacket in celebration, and several have done it on more than one occasion.

Here’s a list of every player who’s conquered ANGC, ranked by number of titles.

A year removed from Tiger Woods’ crash, new Fox Nation special showcases similarities to Ben Hogan’s accident

Will Cain steers the story with special contributions from Rocco Mediate, the USGA’s Mike Trostel and more.

A year ago golf fans were quick to try and compare Tiger Woods’ car crash and Ben Hogan’s accident when the 15-time major champion was involved in a single-car accident that nearly cost him his leg.

As the year went on, more similarities emerged between the two accidents. With the unfortunate anniversary right around the corner, Fox Nation has showcased the comparisons between Woods and Hogan with its new special, Long Drive Back: Tiger Woods and Ben Hogan.

Fox & Friends Weekend co-host and former ESPN host Will Cain steers the story with special contributions from Rocco Mediate, the USGA’s Mike Trostel and Fox News Channel’s Bill Hemmer.

“My concern with Tiger’s injury first was can he be like, hanging out with his kids anymore? Is he going to be able to walk? Golf was like, who cares?” said Mediate, the six-time PGA Tour winner who famously lost to Woods in a playoff at the 2008 U.S. Open. “Has he not given us enough? Right? Has he not given us enough? And everyone was like, ‘When’s he gonna come back and play again?’ In the meantime, he was almost dead. They’re worried about when he’s gonna play again.”

“It is eerie how similar these two stories are,” added Hemmer.

The special can be streamed now on Fox Nation. Not sold yet? Here’s a preview.

Things you may or may not know about Riviera Country Club, host of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational

If the fairways and greens could talk, it’d probably take weeks to hear all the amazing stories.

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Riviera Country Club is approaching its 100th birthday and if the fairways and greens could talk, it’d probably take weeks to hear all the amazing stories.

Situated in the hills just off Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, the club has a long and distinguished history.

Originally established in 1926, “The Riv” as it’s affectionately called, will host the U.S. Women’s open in 2026 as part of its centennial celebration.

Riviera hosts the Genesis Invitational, a tournament that was originally the Los Angeles Open. Like many events on the PGA Tour, the tournament has had several names over the years but one thing that has remained constant is the golf course. It’s a favorite of most players on Tour, a timeless layout in a canyon four miles from the Pacific Ocean.

It’s also a hot spot for the who’s-who of Hollywood. Mark Wahlberg is a member. So is Adam Sandler. Conan O’Brien, Michelle Pfeiffer and Larry David are among the celebrities who own a home on the course.

Thousands of words have been written about the course but maybe there’s a story or two here that you haven’t heard before.
