Best golf balls you can buy in 2024

Check out Golfweek’s list of the best golf balls available to purchase in 2024.

A decade ago, the sight of a non-white golf ball would raise a few eyebrows, but those days are long gone. TaylorMade, one of the largest golf ball makers in the world, predicts its non-white ball sales in 2024 – comprised of balls with stripes, special markings or customized logos – will eclipse traditional white ball sales for the first time.

Golf balls with corporate logos have been popular for decades, but tour pros like Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood compete in PGA Tour events, major championships and Ryder Cups using TaylorMade’s TP5 and TP5x Pix balls that have markings designed to aid in alignment and to reveal how purely you’ve hit your putt. Callaway’s Truvis balls, which are covered in pentagons, have been popular for several years and Srixon’s Divide balls are eye-catching in every weather condition and also help golfers perform better on the greens.

At the same time, manufacturers like Titleist, maker of the Pro V1, and Callaway, maker of the new Chrome Tour, have never made balls to a higher precisely, which means that from ball to ball, consistency is better than ever before.

With such a wide variety of balls on the market, ranging in price from about $22 to around $55 per dozen, finding a ball that matches your game and your budget can be tricky, but Golfweek’s 2024 Golf Ball Guide is here to help. Prioritize what you want from your golf ball (distance, short game spin, soft feel), and then think about a price range you are willing to pay. Keep in mind that if you go down in price, you will likely have to compromise something because the materials that make premium balls perform so well don’t come cheap.

Buy a three-ball sleeve of several different balls, go to the course and see how they perform on chip shots, pitch shots and short approach shots first, then see how they work for you with long irons and woods. The unique way you swing will make each ball play differently, but testing balls on the course will always be the best way to find your perfect golf ball.

Note: Golf balls are often released on two-year product cycles, which means updates are released every two years. For that reason, you will see several 2023 offerings alongside new 2024 putters.

Best golf balls in 2024

Callaway Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X, Chrome Soft balls (2024)

Callaway’s Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X and Chrome Soft offer tour-level spin around the greens and maximum distance off the tee.

Gear: Callaway Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X, Chrome Soft balls (2024)
Price: $54.99 per dozen
Specs: Four-piece, urethane-covered balls (Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X); three-piece, urethane-covered ball (Chrome Soft)
Available: Feb. 2

Who They’re For: Golfers who want tour-level spin around the greens and maximum distance off the tee.

The Skinny: Callaway has updated the core formulation, mantle layers, cover material and aerodynamics of its premium balls. Combined with a broad range of compressions and softness, they provide several options for golfers who want distance off the tee and spin around the greens.

The Deep Dive: For years Callaway, more than any other brand, has associated itself with premium golf balls that feel soft when you hit them. Names such as Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS set expectations in every player’s mind, but in some cases those names didn’t precisely match how the balls performed. For example, the Chrome Soft X LS had a compression in the low 90s, giving it a firm feeling, and labeling it as a low-spin ball may have confused some players into thinking it did not create ample greenside spin. With a thin urethane cover and firm outer-mantle layer, it created enough spin to be Xander Schauffele’s ball of choice in 2022.

In 2023, Schauffele used a prototype version of the Chrome Tour, one of three updated offerings for 2024. Eric Van Rooyan also won the World Wide Technology Championship in November using the prototype ball.

Here is everything you need to know about the new Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X and Chrome Soft balls.

Callaway Chrome Soft 360 Triple Track golf balls

Unique alignment system can help aim a putt and determine if you hit the ball squarely.

In January of 2019, Callaway debuted a new alignment and aiming system called Triple Track on the ERC Soft golf balls, then Phil Mickelson won his fifth AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am a month later using a Chrome Soft X with the unique, three-lined Triple Track system. Odyssey, Callaway’s putter division, even started offering Triple Track in putters in 2020, and the alignment system remains a part of the newest generation of Chrome Soft balls.

Now Callaway is offering an updated version of Triple Track for the Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft LS balls, called 360 Triple Track.

As the name implies, the two blue lines that bracket the red line in the 360 Triple Track system wrap completely around the ball, making it easier for golfers to aim the ball on their desired target line and to see if a putt is struck with a square face. If the lines stay smooth as the putt rolls, a player knows he or she hit the putt correctly with the face square to the target line. If the lines wobble as the ball rolls, the face of the putter was either open or closed to the line when it struck the ball.

Callaway Chrome Soft 360 Triple Track balls (Callaway)

From a construction standpoint, the 360 Triple Track versions of the Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft LS are identical to the 2023 balls that come in standard white, yellow and Triple Track versions.

The Chrome Soft is a three-piece ball that has a large rubber core, a firm casing layer and a urethane cover for enhanced spin around the green, while the Chrome Soft X is a four-piece ball that has a rubber core, two mantle layers and a urethane cover. The Chrome Soft X has a higher compression than the standard Chrome Soft, so it feels firmer. It also produces more spin and a higher launch than Chrome Soft.

The Chrome Soft LS is also a four-piece ball with a dual-mantle design and urethane cover. It is the lowest-spin ball in the Chrome Soft family and produces the lowest flight off the tee for players who generate excessive driver spin.

Callaway ERC Soft, Supersoft golf balls (2023)

Callaway updated several features that provide distance at budget-friendly prices for the Callaway ERC Soft, Supersoft golf balls.

Jon Rahm and Si Woo Kim won the first three PGA Tour events of 2023 using new Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond drivers, and both golfers also used a Callaway Chrome Soft X ball. Xander Schauffele also dropped a Paradym Triple Diamond driver in the bag and is still playing Callaway’s Chrome Soft X LS. The Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS, each of which were updated in 2022, remain the brand’s premium offerings in 2023, boasting the most advanced technologies Callaway can pack into a ball. They also cost more than other Callaway balls.

For 2023, Callaway has updates to several balls at different price points below the Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS, and each places a premium on various aspects of performance. Here is a look at the new ERC Soft and Supersoft balls.
