Former Kentucky basketball target Wooga Poplar chooses Villanova

Wooga Poplar commits to Villanova after Jaxson Robinson chooses Kentucky basketball.

Coach Mark Pope assembled a solid roster of transfers fairly quickly, but was still in the market for a perimeter scorer for most of the month of May. Jaxson Robinson eventually claimed the roster spot, but former Miami Hurricanes guard Wooga Poplar was in the running.

With Robinson in the fold in Lexington, Poplar has moved on and has made his choice as well, and he’ll play for the Villanova Wildcats. He’s a Philadelphia native, so the move makes sense for a number of reasons.

Last season, for Miami, Poplar averaged just over 13 points per game. He was terrific from three-point range, making 38% of his attempts. He was also a solid rebounder, posting five per contest.

Poplar would likely have been a solid addition to the Kentucky roster, but Robinson’s experience with Pope and in the offense made him the more logical choice for Kentucky. Villanova, however, gets a very nice player too, and one who should help make them a better team next season.

Wooga Poplar commits to Villanova, can he help turn Wildcats around?

Miami transfer guard Wooga Poplar committed to the Villanova Wildcats, is he the spark coach Kyle Neptune needs for this program?

The Villanova Wildcats shored up a huge area of need on Wednesday with the announcement that Philadelphia native and former Miami guard Wooga Poplar committed to coach Kyle Neptune’s program.

Poplar’s commitment becomes the second big piece of good news in the past week for Villanova, following Eric Dixon’s decision to withdraw from the NBA draft process and return to school.

Villanova’s offseason took a huge turn when prized portal addition Max Shulga opted to return to VCU rather than play for the Wildcats, leaving coach Neptune’s team in serious trouble.

The return of Dixon and the addition of Poplar – who averaged 13.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists last year at Miami – should help keep Nova in contention for an at-large bid, something that has eluded Neptune his first two seasons after replacing the legendary Jay Wright.

Poplar posted a 38.5% mark from beyond the three point line last season, on 5.6 attempts, while also hitting 47% of his two pointers and converting 86.4% of the time from the free throw line.

Poplar chose Villanova over Oregon, whom he visited over the weekend, and the 6’5 guard should step into a lead role right away for the Wildcats. While Poplar has never been a true facilitator – as evidenced by his career 1.3 assists and 1.1 turnovers per game – his ability to score in multiple ways will be crucial for Villanova’s offensive attack.

Oregon Ducks to host Miami transfer Wooga Poplar after turning down NBA Draft, per report

Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks are expected to get a visit from Miami transfer Wooga Poplar after he withdrew name from 2024 NBA Draft.

It looks like Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks may not be finished in the transfer portal just yet.

After adding players like TJ Bamba, Ra’Heim Moss, and Brandon Angel, Oregon’s roster is looking very solid heading into the 2024-25 season, but it appears that they might still be trying to add one more player to join the rest, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

According to the report, former Miami Hurricanes guard Wooga Poplar is going to be taking a visit to Eugene to check things out after taking his name out of the 2024 NBA Draft consideration on Wednesday.

Poplar had a very solid 2023-24 season at Miami, posting career-highs across the board – averaging 13.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. On top of the scoring, Poplar shot 38.5% from deep in 2023 as well.

We will see if anything comes of the visit to Oregon, but landing this caliber of transfer would be a massive score for Dana Altman and company.
