NBA Mock Draft has Spurs select 6-foot-5 Pittsburgh guard

In a recent NBA Mock Draft, the San Antonio Spurs select Carlton Carrington out of Pittsburgh.

Obviously, by the time the 2024 NBA Draft rolls around, everyone who follows the San Antonio Spurs will have their eyes on the top five selections. However, the Spurs could also find some value in the second round, as more and more teams are drafting quality players late in the draft. Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report recently wrote a mock draft, and in it, he has the Spurs selecting Pittsburgh guard Carlton Carrington with the 35th overall selection.

“Carlton Carrington could generate first-round consideration, but he’s not a lock, which will lead to an interesting decision over whether to scrimmage at the NBA combine,” Wasserman wrote. “It’s easy to see the appeal to a 6’5″, 18-year-old guard who averaged 4.1 assists and 2.0 threes and hit 102 pull-up jumpers. There are just questions about his lack of quickness and burst, which limited his rim pressure and led to a red-flag low steal rate.”

For all the concerns Wasserman detailed there is an equal amount of upside. Carrington’s offensive game could be very useful for the Spurs, who would benefit from more perimeter creation.

In 33 games at Pittsburgh in his freshman season, Carrington averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting 41.2% from the field and 32.2% from behind the three-point line.

Pitt freshman Carlton Carrington to forgo eligibility, enter 2024 NBA draft

Pitt freshman Carlton Carrington announced at a press conference that he will forgo his college eligibility and enter the 2024 NBA draft.

Pitt freshman Carlton Carrington announced on Wednesday at a press conference that he will forgo his remaining college eligibility and enter the 2024 NBA draft.

Carrington was named to the All-ACC Rookie team after averaging 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists on 41.2% shooting from the field in 33 games. He was the only freshman in the country to average at least 13.5 points, five rebounds and four assists this season.

The 6-foot-5 guard registered five 20-point games, including a season-high 27 points, five assists and four rebounds on March 2. He was one of 27 players in Division I to register a triple-double after recording 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in his debut on Nov. 6.

Carrington is projected to be a first-round pick, given his offensive skill set. He can create for himself and has shown the ability to get to his spots in the mid-range, where he flourishes. He still has some work to do on his 3-point shot after converting 32.2% from beyond the arc.

The 19-year-old will also need to strengthen his frame and add weight to develop into a capable defender at the next level. Depending on where he lands, he could be a player who spends time in the G League to improve his game against tougher competition.

Carrington should be an intriguing player for teams drafting toward the end of the first round. He has potential and, in the right situation, could develop into a rotational player.

The 2024 NBA draft will occur June 26-27 in New York City.

Notre Dame’s struggles continue in loss to Pittsburgh

Another road defeat for the young Irish.

Notre Dame has had great recent success against Pittsburgh, winning eight of the previous nine meetings entering Saturday. For much of the first half in the Steel City, it looks like that success would continue. But the Irish were reminded that this is a rebuilding season, and the Panthers recognized that early enough to come away with a 70-60 victory.

Neither team shot well at first, and the Irish (7-15, 2-9) took advantage of that by going up seven a couple of times in the opening half. But the Panthers (14-8, 5-6) overcame missing their first nine 3-point shots and found their stroke, which contributed to them going into halftime on a 16-3 run.

The Irish bounced back from a six-point deficit to tie it early in the second half. The Panthers responded to that by making three consecutive 3s, proving that their early struggles from that distance were ancient history.

The Irish kept the deficit from reaching double digits for a little bit longer, but the deficit did get to that point, there was no recovering. The saving grace is that once they got down 17, they outscored the Panthers, 16-6, over the final few minutes.

Blake Hinson led the Panthers with 17 points with all four of his field goals coming from 3. Carlton Carrington was just behind with three 3s as part of the 16 points he scored before fouling out. Ishmael Leggett scored 12 points off the bench, and Jaland Lowe added 11 points as well as a game-high five assists.

[autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] led the Irish with 17 points and three steals. [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag] scored 16 on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. But the Irish couldn’t counter the Panthers’ 3-point attack as they shot 5 of 19 from that range.

[autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] picked up a technical foul late after coming onto the court to yell at the officials.

ACC men’s basketball leaders as of Dec. 17

No Notre Dame players.

The ACC season has reached the middle of December. Time is running out for players to get their numbers up before conference play really begins. If they don’t do it now, it might be more difficult for them to do so. Here are those who have answered the call though:

ACC men’s basketball leaders as of Dec. 10

No Notre Dame players.

ACC teams are about to get to the middle of December. Full-time conference play isn’t here yet, but it’s creeping closer. Now is the time for all teams to get their mistakes out of the way before the games really start to count. For now though, here are the players atop the major statistical leaderboards:

5 prospects (Ryan Dunn!) who have most improved their 2024 NBA Draft stock since the season began

These are some of the most impressive prospects so far.

Even though the 2024 NBA Draft doesn’t have a clear No. 1 pick like Victor Wembanyama was last season, there is still plenty of intrigue.

Over the past few weeks, we have developed stronger opinions on some prospects who have performed exceedingly well since their season began. With an increasingly larger sample size across college basketball as well as internationally and in the G League, some players are beginning to separate themselves from the pack.

While we did not cover all those who have stood out with pleasantly surprising performances, here are some of the players who have already made us turn our heads a few times:

ACC men’s basketball leaders as of Nov. 26

No Notre Dame players on this list.

We are heading into the end of November. What does this mean as far as college basketball? Not much because no conference games have been played yet, so we only are left to imagine how well the current statistical leaders will play against that competition. Until then, here are those leaders as we get close to December:

ACC men’s basketball leaders as of Nov. 19

No Notre Dame players this week.

We continue to see more of who will make the ACC special this season. Even if these particular players aren’t all at the top of the statistical leaderboards at the end of the season, they still will be worth watching throughout the season. Here’s who’s most worth watching in the conference leading into Thanksgiving week:
