Wofford ends Tennessee’s win streak

Wofford defeats Lady Vols in five sets.

Wofford (6-4) defeated No. 16 Tennessee (5-3), 25-18, 25-20, 25-13, 25-19, 15-12, Monday at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The loss ended the Lady Vols’ five-match win steak. Tennessee also played its third match in three days.

Nina Cajic totaled 17 kills, 19 digs and four aces for the Lady Vols, while Keondreya Granberry recorded 13 kills and two blocks.

Paityn Chapman, the two-time reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, finished the five-set match with 11 kills.

From the back row, libero Ashllyn King had 16 digs, five assists and two aces, while redshirt sophomore setter Caroline Kerr was the Lady Vols’ leading passer. She recorded 48 assists, nine digs and one block.

For one of the few times all season this past week, an opponent was able to solve Notre Dame’s [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag]. NC State held the freshman phenom to a season-low 10 points.

It’s ironic that Hidalgo had her worst game when Iowa’s Caitlin Clark had her best game in which she not only broke the NCAA women’s scoring record but poured in a career-high 49 points. Alas, basketball is a funny game.

Tennessee (6-5) defeated Wofford (7-5), 85-63, Tuesday at Food City Center.

The Lady Vols led, 35-25, at halftime.

Rickea Jackson returned to the Tennessee’s lineup against the Terriers after missing eight games due to a lower leg injury. She recorded 11 points, six rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes. Jackson was one of four Lady Vols to score 10-plus points in the contest.

Jewel Spear was the Lady Vols’ leading scorer with 18 points, including 10 points during the first half.  Karoline Striplin recorded 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Sara Puckett posted 12 points, five rebounds and three assists for Tennessee.

Jasmine Powell totaled nine points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee (5-5) will host Wofford (7-4) on Tuesday at Food City Center.

Tipoff between the Lady Vols and Terriers is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+. Roger Hoover (play-by-play), Kamera Harris (analyst) and Sarah Detwiler (reporter) will be on the call.

The Lady Vols lead the all time series, 1-0, against Wofford. Tennessee defeated the Terriers, 92-53, on Dec. 27, 2022 at Food City Center.

Tennessee is 4-1 versus unranked teams during the 2023-24 regular-season. The Lady Vols’ only loss was against Middle Tennessee State on Dec. 6 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Through two exhibition games and two regular-season contests, the Vols have led for 154:47 of a possible 160 minutes.

Wofford senior transfer Ryan Galanie committed to Tennessee on Sunday.

He earned Southern Conference Player of the Year honors in 2023.

Galanie started 58 games at first base in 2023. He recorded 17 home runs, 88 hits, 66 RBIs, 73 runs, 40 walks, 35 stolen bases and a .383 batting average last season.

Galanie started 59 games at third base in 2022.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Galanie is out of Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The 2024 season will be the seventh for Tennessee under head coach Tony Vitello. Tennessee advanced to the College World Series in 2023 for a second time in three seasons.

The contest ended in a run-rule decision during the seventh inning.

Zander Sechrist started for the Vols and pitched 2.2 innings. He recorded three strikeouts, totaling 38 pitches (23 strikes) against nine batters. Sechrist allowed one hit and one walk.

The win is Tennessee’s eighth consecutive. Tennessee ended a nine-game homestand with an 8-1 record.

The Vols will next play at Georgia, Friday-Sunday.
