Best photos from Wisconsin’s convincing win over Northwestern Wildcats

The Wisconsin Badgers defeated Northwestern 23-3 on the road Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois. The victory was Wisconsin’s third in a row — and was revenge for their 24-10 defeat at the hands of the Wildcats in 2023.

It wasn’t the prettiest of contests, but Wisconsin took advantage of some critical mistakes by Northwestern, most notably recovering a fumble within the five-yard line with less than a minute left in the first half. Cade Yacamelli ultimately punched it in for a score, giving the Badgers a 14-0 halftime advantage. Additionally, the Wisconsin defense blocked a field goal and recorded a safety in the victory.

As a whole, the Badgers compiled 199 rushing yards in the game, with Tawee Walker leading the way with 23 carries for 123 yards. Quarterback Braedyn Locke completed 14 of 24 passes while recording a touchdown and an interception against the Wildcats.

Mike Tressel’s defense held Northwestern to 209 total yards, limiting quarterback Jack Lausch to a miniscule 82 passing yards while completing nine of 24 passes.

The Badgers will have a massive contest with No. 3 Penn State at home in Week 9 as they’ll attempt to pull off the upset and secure their fourth consecutive victory. In the meantime, here are some of the best photos from Wisconsin’s convincing win in Evanston:

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Northwestern Wildcats: Series history, all-time record

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Northwestern Wildcats: Series history, all-time record

The Wisconsin Badgers (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) travel to face the Northwestern Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday at noon ET, 11:00 a.m. CT. It will be the 106th all-time meeting between the two storied prodgrams.

The Badgers own the all-time advantage, posting a 61-39-5 record against the Wildcats. Facing Northwestern on the road, however, has been quite the challenge in recent history. Since 2003, Wisconsin has gone 2-6 in games in Evanston — though they did win their most recent road matchup 42-7 in 2022.

The Wildcats pulled off a dominant 24-10 win over the Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium in 2023. Many describe the contest as the low point for Wisconsin in Luke Fickell’s first campaign as head coach.

Northwestern most recently defeated Maryland 37-10 on the road in Week 7, snapping a two-game losing skid. Maryland out-gained the Wildcats 355 yards to 283, but the Terrapins turned the ball over four times, opening the door for Northwestern to take advantage.

Wisconsin, on the other hand, dominated Rutgers on the road last week, defeating the Scarlet Knights 42-7. Tawee Walker compiled 198 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries and he’s now scored eight times over his last three games. The Badgers are 2-1 in the Big Ten so far this season and currently sit in ninth place in the conference.

Wisconsin remains unranked, six Big Ten teams included in latest AP Top 25 Poll

The Wisconsin Badgers (4-2, 2-1 in Big Ten) remain unranked heading into Week 8. They were left out of the latest AP Poll following their 42-7 road win over Rutgers.

The Badgers built off their momentum from beating Purdue 52-6 in Week 6, improving to 6-0 all-time against Rutgers. Wisconsin was also left out of the latest US LBM Coaches Poll after the win over the Scarlet Knights, failing to garner any votes for yet another week.

The top five of the AP Poll saw some reorganizing after Week 7, but Texas stayed at No. 1. After beating Ohio State, Oregon moved up to No. 2, while Penn State also went up one spot following their win over USC. Lastly,  Georgia at No. 4 and Ohio State at No. 5 rounded out the top five.

The Big Ten teams in the AP Poll top 25 include Oregon at No. 2, Penn State at No. 3, Ohio State at No. 5, Indiana at No. 16, Illinois at No. 22 and Michigan at No. 24.

Wisconsin will attempt to secure a third straight win when they travel to face Northwestern on the road next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Will Badgers snap skid versus Northwestern?

The Badgers football team (5-4) will host Northwestern (4-5) on Saturday at Camp Randall at 2:30PM. The two programs have faced each other 104 times throughout their football history with Wisconsin owning a 61-38-5 overall record against their Big Ten foe.

Over the last 10 matchups, the Badgers have gone 6-4, but they have won the last two matchups including last year, when they took down the Wildcats 42-7.

The most notable storyline for the contest is the fact that the Badgers are coming in with a two-game losing streak and they’ll look to avoid dropping three in a row for the first time since 2020.

Luke Fickell and his Wisconsin squad could be without leading rusher Braelon Allen (leg) and wide receiver Chimere Dike (leg) for second straight contest.

Here’s some pics from their most recent matchups:

Wisconsin vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

There’s always someone who has it worse.

Wisconsin is having problems – more on that in a moment – but Northwestern hasn’t done anything right outside of a great final few drives against Nebraska back in Ireland.

Wisconsin can’t overcome turnovers, but Northwestern is doing its part to make up for it with 12 giveaways over the last four games, no running game, and an offense that stopped scoring.

With defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard taking over the interim reigns after Paul Chryst was fired, expect an even more jacked up performance from the D, and watch out for the ground game to get back to form against a Wildcat defensive front that’s getting run over.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Northwestern Will Win

Don’t be so sure that Wisconsin can run.

24 carries, two yards. that’s what the Badgers did in the program-changing 34-10 loss to Illinois. But that was just part of the problem – turnovers were the larger issue.

Three giveaways against Illinois and three in the loss to Washington State were devastating, and if history is any guide, Wisconsin can’t do anything right when it screws up against Northwestern.

Over the last nine meetings, the Badgers are -13 against Northwestern in turnover margin. Northwestern needs those Badger mistakes to get by, but …

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be a case of a team rising up after the head coach is gone, but Wisconsin will come up with a solid performance because the team on the other side is just that bad.

The Wisconsin offense still won’t be anything special, but the offensive line will take it very, very personally that it got destroyed last week by Illinois. The defensive side will keep the Wildcats to under 300 yards of total offense.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Wisconsin vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

Despite being outplayed overall, the 2020 Northwestern Wildcats came up with five takeaways in the 17-7 win over the Badgers.

The 2019 team lost, but it came up with two takeaways. The 2018 version got three turnovers and won, the 2017 team lost but took it away three times, and after not getting any in 2016, the 2015 Cats forced five turnovers in a 13-7 win.

Want to keep going?

The 2014 Northwestern team took the ball away from Wisconsin four times and the 2013 team came up with three turnovers.

That means in the last eight games between these two, Northwestern has forced 25 takeaways against Wisconsin.

Let’s just say Pat Fitzgerald and his team have figured something out.

The Badgers have chilled on the giveaways after turning it over 17 times in the fist seven games this year, but it’s Wisconsin, it’s Northwestern …

You know what’s coming.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Wisconsin always has a strong defense, but this one is at another level.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Georgia’s D is historically awesome, but it’s giving up 230 yards per game. Oklahoma State has the third-best defense in college football and it’s allowing 277 yards per game.

Wisconsin? 214 yards per game.

2011 Alabama ended up allowing just 184 yards per game in a modern-era all-time great season. No one else since then has finished a season allowing fewer than 250.

No one is running against the Badgers, including Army – Wisconsin allowed a season-most 179 yards against the run-only attack.

The Badgers are No. 1 in the nation in total defense, run defense, third down defense, and they’re fourth in scoring D – which isn’t really fair because the meltdown in the 41-13 loss to Notre Dame was on the offense and special teams – and fifth in pass defense.

Northwestern can’t consistently move the ball until it’s too late, the running game isn’t going anywhere, and worst of all, the run defense is the worst in the Big Ten just as the Badger O line and ground attack has found a groove.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

The turnovers.

That’s it. That’s everything.

Northwestern has the funkiest way against Wisconsin of being totally and completely outplayed yet still comes up with wins because of turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

However, in this, Wisconsin is going to pound away too much and too well. Meanwhile, the Badger D that’s playing at a whole other level is doing its part with 12 takeaways in the last three games.

This matchup always defies all logic and reason, but assuming the Badgers keep the turnovers to under a gajillion …

Wisconsin (15-8) vs Northwestern (6-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Northwestern Will Win

Wisconsin has fallen off the grid.

It has lost five of its last eight and two in a row with the offense struggling and the defense not anywhere near its normal self.

How bad are things? After being a sure thing to hit 40% or better from the field, the Badgers have failed to get there in any of its last three games. If you’re only scoring 62 at home against Iowa, there’s an issue.

Northwestern might have its own issues, but it doesn’t turn the ball over enough to give the struggling Badgers a slew of easy points. But …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

12 straight. That’s the losing streak Northwestern is on after starting 6-1, including a 68-52 loss to Wisconsin back in late January.

It’s not a shooting problem – the Wildcats are able to work the ball around well and get the right shots – but there isn’t enough happening from three and there aren’t nearly enough rebounds at either end.

The Badgers are more than happy to play a low-scoring battle with possessions at a premium. They’re not going to panic when the game is close, they’ll get the boards the Cats won’t, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Finally, the Badgers will look okay.

Northwestern will still be plucky, and Wisconsin will never feel comfortable, but the away side will win the rebounding margin by at least five and will make at least four more free throws.
