Wisconsin lands commitment from 2023 combo-guard John Blackwell

Earlier today, Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers secured a verbal commitment from three-star combo guard John Blackwell out of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Coach Gard and his staff were quick to identify the talented combo-guard when they offered Blackwell a scholarship last September, making UW the first and only power-five offer for the Michigan native.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound combo-guard held offers from Wisconsin, Cleveland State, Oakland, Rhode Island, VCU, Toledo, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, and Central Michigan.

Per 247 sports, Blackwell is the No. 26 ranked combo-guard in the country and the No. 4 player in the state of Michigan.

During his junior season he averaged 13 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 49% from beyond the arc.

This is a plus defender that can knock down shots out on the perimeter, act as a shot creator, push the pace in transition, and finish strong around the rim.

Blackwell’s commitment marks the first addition for Greg Gard and his staff in the 2023 recruiting class.

Wisconsin to get a visit from Wright State transfer Grant Basile

Wisconsin to get a visit from Wright State transfer Grant Basile. #Badgers

Earlier this week, Jon Rothstein reported that Wright State transfer Grant Basile would be taking visits to four programs before making a decision on where he’ll play next season.

Among the programs named were Wisconsin, Iowa State, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech.

Basile is coming off an impressive junior season where he averaged 18.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 blocks per game en route to being named first-team All-Horizon League.

The 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward is a Pewaukee, Wisconsin native, that was recruited by Badgers assistant coach Sharif Chambliss while he was at Wright State.

Basile is a versatile big man that can run the floor, protect the rim, and step out and knock down the three.

It’s easy to see the potential fit with Wisconsin who has plenty of minutes available at forward following the departures of Chris Vogt and Ben Carlson.

The Wright State transfer has one year of eligibility remaining.

The Wisconsin Badgers sit at 4-1 through their first five games and come in at No. 13 in the Week 3 AP Poll.

It hasn’t been the start many envisioned for the team, mainly pointing towards their buzzer-beater loss at Marquette that saw the team slide nine spots in the national rankings.

But they bounced back with an up-and-down victory against Rhode Island and now get to finish their out-of-conference play on a high note before entering into the gauntlet that the Big Ten is this season.

ESPN.com lists win probabilities for each game remaining on their schedule and although these odds are set to change as the season progresses, it’s interesting to look at where the team stands compared to their conference foes.
