Wilson Staff Model RB Utility iron

A hollow design helps deliver more pop in a club designed to keep the ball down in the wind.

Gear: Wilson Staff Model RB Utility iron
Price: $249.99 with True Temper HZRDUS GEN 4 Black shaft and Golf Pride Z grip
Specs: Hollow-bodied design with C300 stainless steel face. 18-, 21- and 24-degree versions

Who It’s For: Golfers who want a driving iron for low shots off the tee in windy conditions that can also bridge the gap between their shortest fairway wood or hybrid and their longest iron.

The Skinny: The hollow-bodied Staff Model RB Utility is designed to deliver more distance than Wilson’s better-player irons while maintaining the look and style of a club made for accomplished golfers.

The Deep Dive: When it comes to finding a club to fit between your last fairway wood and your longest-hitting iron, you have plenty of choices. High-lofted fairway woods, such as a 7-wood, can do the job. And for nearly two decades, hybrids have been a versatile option for many players. However, players who routinely shoot in the 70s and who like to shape shots often prefer driving irons and utility irons.

Staff Model RB Utility iron
The hollow-body design allows the C300 stainless steel face of the Staff Model RB Utility iron to flex more easily so golfers can generate more distance. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Wilson released the Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB this season, and for golfers who love the look and feel of those control-oriented, better-player irons, Wilson is now offering the Staff Model RB Utility iron.

Offered as a 2-iron (18 degrees), 3-iron (21 degrees) and 4-iron (24 degrees), the Staff Model RB Utility has a compact blade length, moderately thin topline and offset to give it a clean look in the address position. Yes, it is slightly larger than a muscleback blade, but the tradeoff for going with a larger design in this driving irons is significant.

The Staff Model RB Utility iron is hollow, so the C300 stainless steel face can flex more efficiently at impact, and that should allow players to generate more ball speed and distance.

Extra weight has been positioned in the heel and toe areas to increase the Staff Model RB Utility iron’s stability and help it resist twisting on off-center hits. That weight also helps lower the center of gravity so the club produces a low- to mid-low launch that can help keep tee shots down in windy conditions.

An internal rib support system helps to further stiffen the body and improve the sound at impact.

Wilson Staff Model ZM wedges

Wilson Staff Model ZM wedges are designed to create more spin and enhanced feel around the greens.

Gear: Wilson Staff Model ZM wedges
Price: $149.99 each with True Temper Dynamic Gold Spinner stock shaft and a Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips
Specs: Forged 8620 carbon steel with face-roughening treatment. Even lofts from 50 degrees to 60 degrees, with 46, 48 and 64-degree versions available through custom order.
Available: April 2 (pre-order March 19)

Who it’s For: Golfers who love the look and feel of a traditional wedge with enhanced spin generation.

The Skinny: Wilson has made the grooves in the Staff Model ZM wedges sharper to complement the soft, forged feel while also adding a high-toe option.

The Deep Dive: For several seasons, Wilson offered a wide variety of clubs made to appeal to a broad audience, like the D Series  and the Dynapower woods and irons. However, in recent years, the Chicago-based brand has turned out some of the most admired clubs for accomplished golfers and low-handicap players, like the recently released Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB irons and Staff Model putters. These clubs are not for everyone, but they demonstrate that Wilson knows what elite golfers want to see, hear and feel on the course, and with the release of the new Staff Model ZM wedges, Wilson is continuing that trend of offering aspiring club champions and good ballstrikers short game tools that look and feel like they belong on tour.

Forged from 8620 carbon steel for a soft feel at impact, the Staff Model ZM wedges have a straighter leading edge and gentle heel relief so golfers can open the face and get the leading edge under the ball when chipping and pitching from a tight lie.

Wilson designers kept the center of gravity (CG) location relatively low in the gap wedges (50 and 52 degrees) by leaving the area behind the topline thin, but extra mass was added in that area in the sand wedges (54 and 56 degrees) to lift the CG, and even more, mass has been added in the lob wedges (58 and 60 degrees). This progressive CG location helps golfers flight their approach shots lower for more control.

Wilson Staff Model ZM wedge
With sharper grooves, updated milling and a surface-roughening treatment, the Staff Model ZM wedges help golfers generate more spin. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

The addition of a new face milling and surface-roughening treatment helps the grooves grab the cover of your golf ball more effectively and keep it on the face longer, which should result in increased spin, especially in wet conditions.

The standard Staff Model ZM wedges have a very traditional look and are available in lofts from 50 to 60 degrees, with 46 and 48-degree clubs available through custom order. Wilson is also offering a high-toe version in 56 and 60-degree options, with a 64-degree club available through custom order. The high-toe model gives players extra hitting area when they open the face on shots around the green.

Wilson Staff Model Blade, Staff Model CB irons

Designed together, Wilson’s newest irons for elite golfers feature classic looks, soft materials and precise shaping to amplify feel and control for low-handicap and championship-level players.

Gear: Wilson Staff Model Blade, Staff Model CB irons
Price: $1,199.99 (4-PW) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115 shafts and Golf Pride Z grips
Specs: Forged 8620 carbon steel with milled face and back areas. 2-iron, 3-iron and gap wedge available through custom order
Available: Jan. 24, but available for pre-order NOW

Who They’re For: Professional golfers, college players and elite amateur golfers who want to maximize feel and control.

The Skinny: Designed together, Wilson’s newest irons for elite golfers feature classic looks, soft materials and precise shaping to amplify feel and control for low-handicap and championship-level players.

The Deep Dive: There is a cliché regarding fine timepieces, sports cars and houses that says that if you have to ask how much it costs, you probably can’t afford it. The Wilson Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB fall into a similar category. These clubs have been made for elite ballstrikers, college golfers and players who can genuinely say they will be contending for their club championship. If you have to wonder if you are consistent enough and powerful enough to use them, you probably aren’t.

That said, the 2024 Wilson Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB offer the highest level of craftsmanship and precision in the Wilson iron family.

The Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB were designed together, so many features and aspects of the clubs are the same. For example, each club is forged from 8620 carbon steel to give it a soft feel at impact. Both clubs have the numbers in the identical portion of the toe and dots on the hosel.

Both clubs have also been designed with Wilson’s Fluid Feel hosel that removes mass from the lower portion of the hosel and allows designers to add it to the lower portion of the head, behind where impact is made. Extra mass has also been added to the toe area. Combined, the Fluid Feel hosel and added mass in the toe pull the center of gravity and ideal impact spot into the middle of the hitting area, amplifying the feel for accomplished golfers and reducing the likelihood of left misses.

Wilson Staff Model Blade and CB 2024
The face and hitting area are also milled to ensure they are perfectly flat and the grooves are added precisely. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

The faces of the Staff Model Blade and the Staff Model CB have also been milled to be perfectly flat to ensure low-handicap golfers get the spin and consistency they expect from shot-to-shot.

Many low-handicap players will also like the traditional lofts of the Staff Model Blade and CB irons, with the 5-iron at 26 degrees and the pitching wedge at 46 degrees. Compared to previous Wilson blade-style irons, the 2024 Staff Model Blade and CB will have a softer, lower-pitched, deeper sound, as well as a softer feel.

Wilson Staff Model CB (2024)
The Staff Model CB is the same size and shape as the Blade, but the perimeter weighting adds a touch of forgiveness. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

While the Staff Model Blade is a true muscleback, the Staff Model CB –which has the same thin topline, narrow sole and minimal offset – offers some perimeter weighting to boost stability and forgiveness. That’s a relative thing because with a blade length this short, misses on the toe will be penalized more than with other Wilson irons, such as the game-improvement DynaPower irons.

As you might suspect, having been designed together and sharing the same price, the Staff Model Blade and CB can easily be mixed and matched into blended sets, giving players and fitters the option of going with more-forgiving long irons and precise scoring clubs if the golfer desires.

Wilson Staff Model, Staff Model X balls (2024)

Check out the new Wilson Staff Model and Staff Model X golf balls.

Gear: Wilson Staff Model, Staff Model X balls
Price: $54.99 per dozen
Specs: Four-piece, urethane-covered balls, available in white and yellow.
Available: January 12

Who It’s For: Golfers who want to maximize greenside spin around the green and get elite distance off the tee.

The Skinny: Wilson reformulated the cores of the Staff Model and Staff Model X balls to improve distance off the tee and spin around the green.

The Deep Dive: Wilson makes all the footballs used in the NFL and all the tennis balls used in the U.S. Open tennis championship, so you can trust that the brand knows a thing or two about making high-quality golf balls too.

Wilson offers the Staff Duo for recreational golfers who want a soft, low-spinning ball to help straighten a slice and hit more fairways. For golfers who are looking to enhance their game with improved greenside spin, it offers the perimeter-weighted Triad. For elite players who want distance off the tee and maximum control around the greens, it has provided the Staff Model balls, and for 2024, the standard Staff Model and the Staff Model X have been updated.

[afflinkbutton text=”Shop Wilson golf balls” link=”https://worldwidegolfshops.pxf.io/VmKn2a”]

The Staff Model and the Staff Model X are both four-piece balls designed with a large rubber core that is encased in two mantle layers. To help golfers generate more ball speed and distance, Wilson has modified the core composition and added material that magnifies energy on full-swing shots.

Wilson Staff Model golf balls 2024
The cores of the Staff Model (left) and Staff Model X balls have been updated to provide more distance. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

The core of each ball is encased in a soft inner mantle that is, in turn, covered by a firmer second mantle layer and then a thin urethane cover. The advantage of the two-mantle design is the softer inner mantle helps to reduce spin off the tee, while the firmer mantle layer helps the grooves in wedges and short irons grab the soft urethane cover more easily, so golfers should be able to create more spin on approach shots, chips and pitches.

The standard Staff Model has a slightly lower overall compression, so it will feel softer at impact, spin slightly less off the tee, and produce a lower ball flight with a golfer’s driver and long clubs.

The Staff Model X will feel firmer, produce a higher flight off the tee and generate slightly more spin around the green. The Staff Model X also produces marginally more spin off the tee, so golfers who like to work the ball from right to left or left to right with their woods and irons may be able to do that more easily with the X ball.
