55 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 55 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 55 jersey number

The New England Patriots are officially 55 days away from their 2023 season-opener at home against the Philadelphia Eagles.

So we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has worn the No. 55 throughout franchise history.

Burgeoning star linebacker Josh Uche currently wears the number, which was also worn by the late, great Pro Football Hall of Famer Junior Seau. Uche did the number proud last season when he exploded for a career-high 11.5 sacks.

There have been a total of 21 Patriots players that have worn No. 55, including other long-tenured standouts like Willie McGinest and Don Blackmon.

Here’s every Patriots player that has worn the number (via Pro Football Reference):

Broncos QB Russell Wilson named a global flag football ambassador

Russell Wilson’s efforts to spread the game of football worldwide takes him into a new role as a global ambassador of flag football.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has been named part of the first team of Global Flag Football Ambassadors in a joint statement released by the NFL and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

“The National Football League (NFL) and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) today announced the first team of Global Flag Football Ambassadors to champion, amplify and support the long-term growth of the game worldwide,” the statement reads.

In addition to Wilson, other ambassadors include Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks, former New England Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest, current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp and former groundbreaking NFL assistant coach Katie Sowers.

“The Flag Football Ambassadors team will support the combined global efforts of the NFL and IFAF to increase awareness, interest, and participation in flag football internationally and drive forward the development of the game,” the release says of Ambassadors’ responsibilities. “Currently played by men, women, boys, and girls of all ages in more than 100 countries around the world, flag football is poised for even greater expansion as the cornerstone of the NFL’s domestic and international participation and development strategies.”

Wilson is no stranger to being active in the world of flag football. In February 2021, Wilson was named as a Co-Owner and Chairman of NFL FLAG, and was the face of flag football in Washington before his trade to the Broncos.

“I have always been a big fan of flag football which is why I started leagues in Seattle,” Wilson said in the statement. “It is the ultimate team sport that combines fitness, creativity and strategy in a fast, fun and exceptionally exciting format. The skills and competitiveness at the elite level are truly next level and really showcase everything that is great about the sport.”

Eli Manning and Omaha Productions explore the magic of jersey No. 55 at USC

Eli Manning is searching for the best jersey number in CFB history, so he did some drills with USC legend Willie McGinest. Eli’s Places airs Aug. 24 on ESPN Plus.

The USC Trojans have had plenty of legendary football stars walk their halls. In the foreseeable future, plenty more stars will play football in Los Angeles wearing the famous Trojan uniform, a college football classic.

One of the most iconic USC football jersey numbers is the number 55. We can go through a long list of players who rocked that number (Willie McGinest and Junior Seau are a few who ring the bell).

In a new episode of Eli’s Places (which is in its second season), Eli Manning spent some time at USC examining the legends who wore the number.

Here is a clip from the show. Episode 3 of Omaha Productions’ Eli’s Places will air on Wednesday, August 24, on ESPN Plus.

Manning spent time at USC, and after seeing McGinest and the famous No. 55, he even had some fun with the former New England Patriot star linebacker.

Here is a short clip of Eli and McGinest hanging out in Southern California.

It is great to watch two former NFL stars having some fun in retirement.

Eli’s other places, if you’re interested (and we’re sure you are!) include or will include Notre Dame, Penn State, and Brigham Young.

This show has been fun to watch so far, and we can only imagine what other former NFL stars Eli will come across at some of the other schools.

Tune in on Wednesday to see the full episode.

Brian Daboll has hilarious story about former Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest

Brian Daboll remembers a specific situation with Willie McGinest.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has been known to have a fiery personality. He’s since mellowed out over the years thanks to former New England Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest.

Daboll began his Patriots coaching career in 2000, as a defensive assistant. He then worked his way up to wide receivers coach, and held that position from 2002-2006. After several other stops in the NFL, he came back to New England in 2013, taking the role of tight ends coach.

Now, he is the head coach of the New York Giants. Hired on January 28, he held his introductory press conference on Monday. He told a funny story of how McGinest got him to be more easy-going.

Daboll will now have a chance to leave his mark, with the New York Giants in need of a fresh voice at head coach.

Willie McGinest thinks this quarterback will start Week 1

The Patriots legend gave his thoughts on who the starter will be come Week 1,

With the New England Patriots about to enter a bit of a quarterback battle between Jarrett Stidham and Cam Newton, experts around the country have been weighing in. However, Willie McGinest  is confident as to who he thinks the Patriots will trot out under center in Week One.

Stidham appeared to be the favorite early on in the year. However, the signing of Cam Newton changed all that. Now, Newton is trying to prove that he can still be a top-notch quarterback. McGinest thinks that the veteran will be under center when the team faces the Dolphins in Week One.

“Well, they say it’s a competition, but if you are asking my opinion, I expect to see Cam Newton start at the quarterback position,” McGinest said on WEEI’s “Dale & Keefe,” as transcribed by Boston.com. “If he’s healthy he’s the guy.”

As training camp begins, it will be interesting to follow this quarterback battle. One thing is for certain: The Patriots are entering uncharted territory in more ways than one.

Willie McGinest: Matt Patricia ‘knows how to win’, encourages patience

In a recent interview, Willie McGinest says Detroiit Lions coach Matt Patricia “knows how to win” and that it takes time to build a team with a winning culture.

After two lackluster seasons as coach of the Detroit Lions, Matt Patricia is on the hot seat. Many have started to doubt if he is the right man to lead the Lions out of football futility and there is plenty of speculation surrounding if the Lions should show him — and general manager Bob Quinn — the door and start anew.

Even though the Lions recently went through a change in principal ownership, Shelia Ford Hamp has stayed committed to the Patricia/Quinn duo for another season — and maybe more due to the current COVID environment — to see if they can improve from the down years.

Some of the issues fans/players/analysts have had with Patricia include his ability to communicate effectively, perceived inability to recruit some highly toughed free agents, an abrasive coaching style, and being too aggressive with the players early in his tenure, creating some animosity in the locker room.

Most would agree Patricia’s rookie season was not the greatest on or off the field — including in the media room –, but those same people will tell you they saw a complete turnaround with Patricia in his second season. You could see the adjustments made by Patricia in his sophomore season and it became clearer what he is trying to build.

Unfortunately, after losing Matthew Stafford for the back half of 2019, it was a rough go for his second season, but I am not alone in believing Patricia is on the right path to building a successful organization.

Recently, long-time New England Patriot linebacker and NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest was on the Pardon My Take podcast, where he discussed some of the nuances of the Patriot Way and how Patricia needs time to build.

McGinest talked about the system and how it could be a hard sell to players —  especially when they haven’t been to the Super Bowl and seen the results. He also noted how players often expect instant success and are not willing to put in the work to get the ultimate prize.

One particular statement that caught my attention was when McGinest talked about how Bill Belichick only kept a few players that fit the criteria and the mold he was looking for in players and build around those guys. That sounds eerily familiar to how Patricia is building the team with jettisoning players that don’t fit the style and mold he is looking to develop in the locker room, i.e., Darius Slay and Quandre Diggs. McGinest also stated that the philosophy is not about having the best players, but the right ones. The ones who are willing to buy into the system and willing to put in the effort to achieve results.

McGinest would go on to say that Patricia “knows how to win”, is an astute individual who has been in a lot of different systems, and with his extensive knowledge of players, he knows what he needs to build the culture of a winning team.

Additionally, McGinest commented that it is vital to have a GM and coach who is on the same page — and with all intent and purpose, Patricia and Quinn are intertwined in their approach to being competitive week in and week out.

Everybody wants to win right now and many were expecting to be on top from day one when Patricia took over as coach. But these things take time to build, especially in a system where there is a team mentality and not a me mentality.

Patricia has spent the last two and a half years retooling the coaching staff and roster, bringing in individuals who fit the system. Good things take time to build and with the right mentality/work ethic, the Lions could see those dividends pay off very soon.

Willie McGinest has full faith that Tom Brady will excel in Bruce Arians’ offense

It’s the first time Tom Brady has learned a new offense in 20 years.

Willie McGinest put together a list of the most talented teammates he’s ever played with, and quarterback Tom Brady was, unsurprisingly, the No. 1 person on the list. Their time together with the New England Patriots seemed to make a major impression on McGinest.

In the process of McGinest explaining why Brady is the best teammate, the linebacker touched upon his optimism with the quarterback transitioning from the New England Patriots to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason. Though Brady has played in the same system for 20 years with the Patriots, McGinest has no doubt that Brady will excel in a new offense with Bruce Arians and the Buccaneers.

Here’s what McGinest, an analyst at NFL Network, wrote for NFL.com:

“I’ve known Brady a long time, and there’s not much I haven’t already said. His competitive nature, work ethic and ability to perform at the highest level in the most pressure-packed situations are why he’s considered the best to ever play our game. It’s why he’s won three league MVP awards. It’s why he’s won SIX Lombardi Trophies. It’s why he’s still playing at 42 years old (he’ll turn 43 in August). The one thing I’ll point out in this piece is that Brady can work in any system and with anyone. He’s always been about the success of the team, so I can’t wait to watch how this new chapter unfolds in Tampa. His competitive nature won’t let him fail.”

Willie McGinest explains why Ty Law was the best defender he ever played with

“Introducing Mr. Take Away Your Best Receiver. That was Ty Law.”

Retired New England Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest put together a list of the five best football players he’s had the pleasure of playing with, and the best defensive player on that list was Ty Law.

The list went 5) tight end Ben Coates, 4) defensive end Richard Seymour, 3) tackle Joe Thomas, 2) cornerback Ty Law and 1) quarterback Tom Brady. The decision to list Law as the best defensive player comes with little surprise. The Patriots drafted him at 23rd overall in the 1995 NFL Draft, and he went on to have 10 impressive seasons with the team before bouncing around the NFL to the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos — but not before winning three Super Bowls with New England.

Here’s what McGinest wrote:

“Introducing Mr. Take Away Your Best Receiver. That was Ty Law. He wanted the challenge of facing the very best receiver, whether it was within the game plan or not. He was strong at the line of scrimmage, had great ball awareness and worked for everything he got. He did a lot of conditioning before, during and after practice, and he always wanted to hold up his end. I have no doubt that Ty Law was the best cornerback of his era; he led the NFL in interceptions twice and led the Patriots in INTs six times. Always attacking the ball, he became a receiver when the ball was in the air, often preventing the receiver from making a play.

“But Law’s best attribute was his confidence. No one could tell him he wasn’t the best CB in the NFL or that he couldn’t cover the league’s top receiver. He thrived off those comments and could play man or zone extremely well, allowing him to play in a lot of systems if needed. With confidence through the roof and no fear, Law made one helluva career for himself.”

Willie McGinest drops a funny tweet to promote social distancing

A good attitude.

Retired New England Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest isn’t ready to break social distancing. He took to Twitter to joke about how he’s keeping people at six feet during the coronavirus pandemic.

McGinest shared an old image of him wagging his finger at a teammate who is trying to shake hands. Apparently, McGinest is taking the same approach during the COVID-19 outbreak. Even while making light of a bad situation, he’s clearly taking the virus seriously. It’s nice to see him affirming positive behaviors — and even applying a sense of humor.

Here’s a look at what McGinest posted on Twitter on Thursday morning.

Willie McGinest has compelling take on Patriots, Cam Newton

Maybe it could work.

Willie McGinest won’t rule out the New England Patriots signing quarterback Cam Newton, whose free agency has lasted much longer than anyone could have expected. Newton is coming back from a handful of injuries, and with the coronavirus pandemic putting the NFL in a lockdown, teams are probably awaiting the opportunity to give him a physical.

When that happens, McGinest thinks New England is a good fit for him.

”I think that Bill Belichick has handled so many different personalities that they would coexist,” McGinest said Thursday on FOX Sports 1’s “Speak For Yourself.” “It would be a great working relationship. I’m just telling you guys right now, there is a lot of respect from the Patriots organization when it comes to Cam Newton. They have played several times and Cam Newton has showed out and played at a high level every single time they’ve played.”

Considering the Patriots have just Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer at quarterback, New England seems like a strong candidate to kick the tires on Newton. Still, they have yet to show interest in the quarterback, according to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi. But if the Patriots find they can give Newton a physical and teach Newton the playbook in time for training camp, perhaps they’ll change their mind on signing the veteran.
