UTEP vs Florida Atlantic Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

What’s bowl eligible UTEP doing that’s so right?

It’s one of the best stories of the 2021 season – the Miners are good at football and have a shot to take over the Conference USA West division with a win over UTSA next week.

First, they have to keep the shocking production going from a defense that’s traditionally been a doormat.

It’s been amazing on third downs, the pass defense has been wonderful, and overall, the D is No. 1 in the league allowing fewer than 300 yards per game.

The offense might not be devastating, but there’s a nice downfield passing game to complement the defense that’s allowed fewer than 14 points in three of the last four games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Florida Atlantic has the offense to make UTEP press a bit.

The Owls were terrific in blowout wins over Charlotte and FIU, hitting well over 200 yards both running and passing, starting with a passing attack that should be able to push the Miner secondary.

Louisiana Tech can throw, but other than that, there haven’t been a whole lot of high-powered passing teams on the UTEP slate. Florida Atlantic won’t go off, but the offense is among the best in the country on third downs, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

That’s how this is all going to work for Florida Atlantic. It’s not about the explosion. It’s about the consistency of the offense that won’t turn the ball over and should force UTEP to take a few too many chances.

The Miners keep getting challenged and they keep coming through, but they have yet to beat a team that’s likely to go bowling. This is when they have to prove they can play with the conference big boys. They’ll fall just short in a good game on the road, but they’ll show they’re for real, and that they belong.

Winning would be nice, but they can drop this and be just fine as long as they beat UTSA next week.

Charlotte vs WKU Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

The WKU defense was able to stuff FIU last week, but that was an aberration.

It’s been a rough run for the Hilltoppers on the defensive side, allowing 400 yards or more in three straight games before giving up almost 450 to Old Dominion. Charlotte’s attack has been hit-or-miss, but it’s been good against the mediocre defenses.

The 49ers should be in control of the tempo throughout. They’re among the best teams in the country in time of possession – keeping the ball for close to 34 minutes per game – and WKU doesn’t care about the clock with its up-tempo attack.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why WKU Will Win

The offense continues to bomb its way through games, and the production is coming with two straight road wins before coming home this week.

Bailey Zappe keeps on doing Bailey Zappe things, throwing three or more touchdown passes in every game and coming off one of his sharpest days of the year – he hit 80% of his throws for 382 yards against FIU.

Does Charlotte have a good secondary? Sort of. It’s had its moments, but it got hit hard by FIU and allowed 225 yards or more in three of the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte should be able to keep up the pace for a while against the porous WKU defense, but it’s not going to be able to sustain the production for a full four quarters.

However, the 49er defense will keep this from getting out of hand. WKU and Zappe will get their yards, but it’ll take a few late scoring drives to finally put this away.

San Diego State vs Fresno State Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

Score.

It sounds easy, but this isn’t a San Diego State team built to come up with any sort of big comeback or work out of its comfort zone. It got pushed just a wee bit by San Jose State and had to rally back, and that was just a 19-13 double overtime win.

As good as the Aztec defense is, it hasn’t played anyone who can throw. Utah is as close to a high-powered passing game as it gets on the schedule, if it’s not New Mexico State and the 326 yards it threw for.

Jake Haener and the Fresno State offense need to be sharp from the start, and the great pass rush – the Bulldogs lead the nation in tackles for loss – has to take over on third downs. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why San Diego State Will Win

San Diego State makes you play its style.

The offense might not do anything great, but the ground game is terrific, the run defense is a brick wall, and everything else falls into place from there.

The punting game leads the nation averaging 46.6 yards per kick, the team always owns the turnover battle, and forget about converting on third downs.

Fresno State turns the ball over way too much and gets hit with too many penalties. You have to be perfect to beat the Aztecs, and Fresno State isn’t perfect.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect any sort of a firefight. San Diego State will do what it does to make this a grind, and Fresno State will have to be patient.

It’s going to be about field position, turnovers, and dealing with the tempo, and San Diego State will do that just a wee bit better.

It’s a late night game, but stay up for it. The first three quarters will put you to sleep, but the fourth will be intense.

Boise State vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Boise State Will Win

If you’re a believer in the every other week pattern – a team that’s able to adapt, tweak, and adjust – then the Broncos are pulling this off after alternating win-loss-win-loss throughout the year. They’re coming off a loss to Air Force.

It’s all about the Boise State running game. The defense hasn’t been good enough, but the passing attack has been fine. On the ground, when the offense runs for over 100 yards, the team is 3-0. It’s 0-4 when it doesn’t get to 100 yards, but Colorado State’s run defense – as great as it’s been this year – has allowed over 100 yards in two of the last three games.

For all of the issues, Boise State is fantastic at converting on third downs, it doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes, and the return game has been great. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Colorado State Will Win

Colorado State’s run defense has been terrific.

Yeah, it allowed over 100 yards in two of the last three games, but it only gave up 113 to San Jose State and 111 to Utah State – the defense has been phenomenal since the opener against South Dakota State.

The pass rush and the ability to get into the backfield is among the best in the country, and Boise State’s offensive line just hasn’t been good enough. It’s not doing enough consistently well for the running game, and it’s among the worst in the country in tackles for loss and sacks allowed.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Boise State has a way of pulling up out of the nosedive when it looks like things are about to crash.

Colorado State has the pass rush and the lines to stop the Boise State offense cold, but two turnovers will matter and too many Ram penalties will add up.

Hawaii vs Utah State Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Hawaii’s running game continues to be terrific, and it’s going to run and run and run some more against the horrible Utah State run defense.

Dae Dae Hunter has been banged up, but when he’s right he’s been a 100-yard machine. He couldn’t go last week against New Mexico State, do Dedrick Parson stepped in and ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns.

This is nowhere near your normal Hawaii fun-time passing attack, it’s going to get physical and control games on the ground.

Utah State has one of the nation’s worst run defense, allowing over 200 yards per game and giving up multiple rushing scores in four of the last five outings.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Utah State Will Win

Utah State might not be doing anything against the run, but its passing attack is able to make up for it.

The Aggies went through a two-game lull with losses to Boise State and BYU, but the passing game still worked with well over 500 yards in the two games combined.

New head coach Blake Andersen is going to need a while to fix the D, but his team should be able to bomb its way out of it against a Hawaii secondary that was roasted by Fresno State’s Jake Haener and Nevada’s Carson Strong, and overall is allowing close to 300 yards per game.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It has something to do with playing UCLA, Oregon State, and Nevada, but Hawaii is 1-3 on the road this year and now has to deal with a Utah State team that found its groove again.

The Aggies are badly flawed, and they’re going to have a hard time putting the game away, but their passing attack will overcome the Rainbow Warrior ground game.

Wyoming vs San Jose State Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

Where did the Wyoming O go?

More on that in a moment, but in this, the D is going to have to pick up the slack in a big, big way.

The Cowboys have allowed 259 yards of offense against both Fresno State and New Mexico, doing a great job against the run and a better job against the pass. In the two games they allowed 31 total points and haven’t given up more than 24 to anyone Northern Illinois in a 50-43 win.

The San Jose State offense hasn’t been able to do much with the quarterback situation up in the air thanks to Nick Starkel being banged up. It did next to nothing against Colorado State and San Diego State, and it struggled to get out alive against a winless UNLV.

Okay, to stop stalling …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why San Jose State Will Win

Wyoming … my man … the offense …

The Cowboy O has fallen totally off a cliff, going from looking to possibly be balanced and solid to struggling way too much to score. The has failed to get to 275 yards in any of the last three games – losing them all after a 4-0 start – will no running game and a worse passing attack.

So what’s the problem?

The offensive line isn’t playing well, and turnovers. Lots and lots and lots of turnovers, with five against Fresno State and 11 in the last four games. The Cowboys have scored just 17 points in the last three outings, and San Jose State is doing enough against the run – allowing fewer than 100 yards in three of the last four games – to keep the pain going. And …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The Spartans should be able to come up with at least two takeaways. That might be enough to get the job done considering they’re more than happy to give the ball away in bunches.

Neither team will do a whole lot of high-powered scoring, and there won’t be enough of a downfield passing game from either one to have any fun, but it’ll come down to which offense isn’t quite as awful.

Wyoming’s defense is just a wee bit better to make the San Jose State offense be just a wee bit worse.

UNLV vs Nevada Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

The Rebels are so, so, so, so close to finally getting a win under head coach Marcus Arroyo.

They lost each of their last four games by eight points or fewer, but they’re not making the right play at the right time, they’re not quite sharp enough, and it’s the little things that tend to be the issue.

The battle for the Fremont Cannon might keep the focus and put all the pressure on the other side.

The passing game has been decent – hitting 240 yards or more in three of the last four – and running well against Utah State. There’s no Nevada running game to worry about, the offensive line allows a few too many sacks, and the team has been able to stay in games despite being bombed on.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Nevada Will Win

The Nevada offense and passing game might be too much to overcome.

Carson Strong continues to bomb away, hitting 71% of his passes with 20 touchdowns – 12 TDs and 377 yards or more in the last three games – and he’s been amazing in his first two games against the Rebels.

351 yards and a score as a freshman, and 350 yards and and two scores as a sophomore – no picks in either game. He’ll be just fine in the moment.

The combination of Strong and all the big plays in the backfield from the Wolf Pack line should be enough to keep up the pressure for a full 60 minutes.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

UNLV will play well enough to stay in the game for just over a half, but the offense won’t be able to run well enough to overcome a massive performance from the Nevada passing game.

The Rebel lines won’t hold up well enough at the end, but the team will once again come up with a terrific fight in another tough loss.

SMU vs Houston Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

The Mustang passing attack keeps on rolling.

Tanner Mordecai has been on fire hitting 70% of his passes with 29 touchdowns and seven picks, throwing for over 300 yards against everyone but TCU.

Most of the picks and mistakes came in two games – the Mustangs won anyway – and he’s got the running game back with Ulysses Bentley expected to be ready to go again after having injury issues.

The Houston defense hasn’t been a rock lately, allowing 200 yards or more in the last three even though it hasn’t gone against anyone great.

For all of the fun Houston has had going 6-1, it hasn’t beaten anyone who’s going to go bowling. Throw in the loss to Texas Tech, and it might not have played anyone yet who’ll end up getting an extra game.

The SMU offense will be the biggest test by far since the Cougars dealt with the Red Raiders. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Houston Will Win

Yeah, it’s not like SMU has ripped through the SEC West on the way to 7-0 – it hasn’t played anyone who’s likely to go bowling, either.

The offense has been a blast, but it has ripped through a whole slew of bad defenses including TCU’s. Now it gets to deal with a Houston defense that’s been a bear so far, only allowing more than 145 rushing yards to Navy and its run only offense, and not giving up more than 260 yards through the air.

The Cougars are fourth in the nation in total defense, the offense doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, and that nasty D is the best in college football at stopping teams on third downs.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, we’re all supposed to just crown Cincinnati as the American Athletic Conference champion and then move on with our lives, but the winner of this will be deep in the hunt for the title. The loser might be, too, especially if it’s SMU since it gets a shot against the Bearcats.

Houston might not have the offensive pop of SMU, but it won’t need it with a defense that’s playing at an elite level. It’ll keep Mordecai and company from going off, the offense will have the ball for over 35 minutes, and it’ll be a signature win in the Dana Holgorsen era.

UCF vs Temple Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Things aren’t going all that well if you’re getting whacked by 20 against USF.

Temple has had its moments – beating Memphis was stunningly nice – but it wasn’t even in the game against Cincinnati and it managed to be the FBS team to break an ugly USF losing streak.

The offense isn’t moving the chains, the defense can’t stop anyone from running, and UCF is about to make this as simple as possible.

The Knights came up with a very, very important win over Memphis last week to keep its bowl hopes alive, and they did it by blowing off the struggling passing game and running a finally healthy Isaiah Bowser for 111 yards.

Temple just gave up 421 rushing yards to USF after allowing 279 to Cincinnati.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Temple Will Win

So what’s going right lately for Temple? Not much, but the run D should be able to sell out with UCF not able to do much of anything with the passing attack since QB Dillon Gabriel went out hurt.

Mikey Keene is giving it the old college try, but there’s nothing happening down the field and he has five interceptions since taking over and just four touchdown passes. Joey Gatewood went 2-for-2 with a score against Memphis, but again, this UCF passing attack is a shadow of its former self.

Temple absolutely has to take the ball away. It’s two wins came in the two games it forced multiple turnovers. UCF hasn’t been that bad at holding on to the ball, but it gave it up three times against Cincinnati and twice to Navy in the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

UCF has yet to come up with a road win, but it was close in the losses to Louisville and Navy.

This is when the defense has to rise up to help the cause. Temple will be better than it’s been in a few weeks – the O will show a little balance – but Bowser will take over the Knight offense and the other side will be just good enough to get off the field on two key late Owl drives.

Cincinnati vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The Bearcats got past the knuckleball, and now they’re getting a team that also has a different sort of offense – and it’s really, really struggling.

Navy wasn’t quite the easy out it should’ve been – it required a ton of work late to get out with a 27-20 victory over a bad team – but this week the Cincinnati offense should be able to take control right away and get up big.

Tulane allows over 42 points per game, giving up 40 or more in four of the last five. The run defense is spotty, the pass defense is worse, and there’s a big problem overall with turnovers and takeaways.

That’s all about to change.

The Bearcat running game will be great, Ridder will be terrific, and Cincinnati will get past an early Tulane score to go on a huge run to take the drama away fast.
